View Full Version : So I ordered pizza for dinner.

Guy shows up - 20 minutes early, even - and I pay for the pizza.
He gives me my change and starts to walk off before I've had a chance to tip him.
Now, two questions.
1) Possibility that he was giving me counterfeit bills as change and keeping my 'real' change for his tip?
2) Levity aside, I seek the collective wisdom of FOFC. I called the guy back and said "Hey, don't run off yet," and tipped him...but what would y'all have done?

I don't know. He seemed a little embarrassed when I handed him the tip, so maybe he's a new driver and wasn't quite down with the whole thing yet, but 'odd' is definitely the word for it.

Maybe he read too many Penthouse forums and was disappointed that a hot, naked girl didn't meet him at the door. If you ever have any plumbing problems, and the same guy comes out, then my theory is definitely correct.

I delivered pizza for a little while for Mountain Mike's in Los Gatos.
It's an awkward situation between giving the pizza and getting a tip. There's a combination of factors that include (but are not limited to) not wanting to appear greedy, not wanting to get fired for asking for a tip, and not wanting people who can't afford to tip feeling like shit.
When I'd deliver a pizza, I'd assume that if they wanted to tip me that they'd either have the tip ready in bills they already had, or they'd stop me in the split second it took to turn to my car. If you planned on tipping him (even $1), you should have said "wait a minute". He would have come back for that buck, and would have been appreciative. I guarantee it. There's a precious dynamic between pizza deliverers and customers. If you just mention that you appreciate it, but can't tip, it's no big deal. But, if you're too afraid to throw down a buck because you think you're too shy, then the delivery person won't go the extra mile for you.
A delivery person will never spit on your pizza or fuck with it otherwise (unless they're a sick fuck), but they won't bother to make sure you get any special treatment. Trust me. If you are picky, tipping can help assure yourself of satisfaction. We remember addresses.

When I delivered pizzas I did not share your mellow attitude towards tips. If you can't afford to tip the driver, you don't deserve to have food brought to your home. Cook your own damn dinner or get your lazy ass to the store to pick it up. Drivers often get paid at or just below the minimum wage, gas is expensive, and tips are their lifeblood.

I've seen ads offering 10-15/hour for pizza drivers. Not saying its a lot of money, but its more than minimum wage.

I usually just say "eh, just give me back $ __" when he goes to give change. Like if it's $15.83 or something and I give a $20, I'll just say "just give me back two, that's fine".

I delivered pizza's years ago and I agree with Big Fo. If you want someone to deliver pizza to your house, tip them. If you don't feel like tipping, drive into the damn pizza place and pick it up. I don't care what your financial situation is. Mine obviously isn't much better if I'm delivering YOU pizzas.

It varies by place. While I was driving for Pizza Hut I would get my hourly wage(6.00 to start) and a dollar a run. Other places in the Cincy area I know one place gives their drviers hourly wage plus a % of the drivers sales.
The $10-15 an hour is including tips, I see the restaurants in the area that advertise the same thing when hiring waiters

I found a counterfeit five dollar bill in my cash drawer earlier this week. A pretty decent photocopy job, I only caught it because there were some faint red lines on the back side, and it certainly didn't feel like cash...
I always give exact change, tip already included. Of course, I always have a decent amount of cash on hand...

That has to be regional. I have several delivery friends in Tampa and none of them made under $10 an hour and it was usually $12. Never heard of $15 though.
The thing is, that's not a lot of money. You have to maintain your own vehicle and pay your own gas too and insurance etc. I really appreciate what they do and I certainly would feel bad not tipping them... unless they act like they're entitled to a tip. That's my hot button. I don't HAVE to tip you but I want to and how much depends on the experience I have and attitude counts.
Can't say I've ever stiffed one though. I'd just choose another pizza place next time. I'm not a pizza connoisseur.

Wow, you are giving a whole $2.17 as a tip...stand aside for Mr. Big Tipper!!
cuervo72
03-31-2007, 06:35 PM
Sometimes rounding doesn't work well, sometimes it does. That was just an example. Either way, 15% of $15.83 would have been just under $2.40 anyway, and that's if you disregard the fact that the price included tax. So I either tip $3.17 or waste the guy's time dealing in change?
In general, I'm a pretty ok tipper I'd say (left a buck at Chipotle just tonight, and I think by and large the rule on takeout is that you needn't tip at all, but I often do anyway). And, more often than not, I drive myself to pick up food. Doesn't hurt me much to drive a mile and a half to Pizza Hut.

25 minute round trip? that's not horribly far out in the boonies. It's prolly 15 minutes or so round trip if we were to go pick up pizza here in town.

Well, it is going from a town of 150 (Driftwood) to a town of 4,000 (Wimberley) for Pizza Hut or 2,000 (Dripping Springs) for Dominos. For Papa John's, it's a 45 minute round trip into South Austin.
For Pizza Hut or Dominos, it works out well. If I leave the house right after calling in the order, the pizza is just coming out of the oven when I get there.

A delivery charge doesn't always go to the driver. When I first started at Pizza Hut the charge was 75 cents which I got to keep. The company increased it to $1.00 which I got to keep 75 cents of. Now it's $2 which the company lets the driver keep $1.00 of.
Personally I think it's a crappy thing tro do because every time the delivery charge went up my tips dropped coupled with the number of deliveries I would get to take.

20 minutes early? What did they tell you on the phone? About 2 hours for delivery?
Actually, they quoted about an hour.
Given that it was a Friday night and I ordered around 7 pm, that wasn't too bad.
Guy was there in about 40 minutes, which ain't bad.
I tipped him well. You gotta understand, growing up, we'd order pizza, have a bill of like $22, Mom would right a check for a bill plus a buck plus the rounded change. So if it was $22.38, the pizza guy would get $24. I can remember a couple of times tipping the guy an extra few bucks out of pocket and apologizing for my mom.
But last night was still weird having the guy just up and walk off like that. I wonder if he had kind of gotten used to folks who pay cash (which I seldom ever do - it's usually credit + write the tip into the receipt) stiffing him on the tip, so he just assumed he wasn't getting anything?
I've been thinking about it off and on since I created this thread, and I still can't come up with an answer that makes any sense.

I always figured that the $1.25 delivery charge that Pizza Hut charges went strictly to the restaurant, not to the driver. I'm curious how much of that the drivers get around here...
Probably won't change how much I tip unless I find out for certain, though...

I always tip my driver, either in the method of asking for less than they expect to give back or in the form of just handing them the total with tip, and saying "Thank You" to let them know I don't want change. The delivery around here is always hella late but I don't know how much of that I can blame on the driver and how much is just the incompetence of the pizza joint so the driver always gets between 2 and 3 from me, depending on how much I order.

Well, possibly a difference between restaurant take out and take out take out though. I mean, really Chipotle is not a whole lot different than say, Burger King (they make themselves look like they're snazzy, but it's essentially high falutin fast food). I think I'd have gotten laughed at if I requested a tip at BK.
