Bizarrely it makes you go past the south west tip of Cornwall and carry on for a fair few miles more to get to France. Not only is it mad, it's vindictive.

Interesting, taking into account the time Google Maps estimates driving, Google Maps believes that the average driver can swim 3462 miles in 29 days for about 119 miles a day.

Um...that's nice and all, but I live on the north side, and these directions start in the south side. I assume the directions for me are totally different?

It appears those are the standard ports of exit and entry between the US and Europe. I told it to map between my house and my old apartment in Milan, and it took the same transatlantic route.
