So I'm watching Solevision and my team has a first and goal from the bad guys 8. We run a play and the defense jumps offsides. 5 yard penalty. But that would be more than half the distance to the goal, so the ball should actually be placed at the 4 and it reduced to a 4 yard penalty.

Instead, the game only gives me half the distance of the penalty (rounded down) and makes it a two yard penalty and places the ball at the 6.

Weird.

Are you sure you weren't playing Arena football? :)

Sounds like a candidate for the bugs thread, if you haven't already put it there.

I've spent some time looking for this one, I'm not finding evidence.

Could you post a game log, or even better, a Solevision file for that week?

I'm also having trouble verifying the penalty acceptance report (probably from someone else) where on 1st and 25, an offsides was accepted, eliminating a 21-yard pass play.

Yeah, I'll see if I can find it and post it.

Thanks.

Never did find the original that spawned this thread, but it just happened again - sort of. This time though, the Hagars should have been given the full five yards, no?

Q&A about penalties with former official Jerry Markbreit

When do penalties switch from five-, 10- and 15-yard varieties to half the distance from the goal line? If the offense was already on their goal line, would penalties have no real effect on their distance to first down? --Hank Jones, Joliet

If a distance penalty, enforced from a specific spot between the goal lines would place the ball more than half the distance to the offender's goal line, the penalty is half the distance from that spot to the goal line.

It looks like the offsides penalty is being incorrectly marked off from the end of the play (the 5 yard line), causing a half the distance call, but being applied from the line of scrimmage (the 13 yard line). It should be calculated and applied from the original LOS, the 13 yard line.
