Some here are aware that I've been part of a weekly podcast, with the goal from day 1 being to turn it into a real radio show. By that I mean the podcast is not the real goal itself, but instead has been a sort of ongoing demo in hopes of breaking onto a station.
(thread on that stuff here: http://www.operationsports.com/fofc/showthread.php?t=50397)
Well, almost a year to the day we first sat in front of microphones, we're getting a night on a real radio station - a major one in New York City, for that matter. Here are the details:
Tuesday, April 10th, 9PM-12Midnight
For those in the New York City listening area: 92.3 FM (FREE-FM, WFNY)
For those outside it, the station streams online at 923freefm.com (http://www.923freefm.com)
And it's personally awesome that we're going to get to follow our favorite radio show, Ron & Fez.
Of those of you I've talked to already, I've gotten a lot of similar questions, so here's an updated version of an exchange I had over at IHOF that explains a lot of the things people are asking about:
Great news! Do you see this as the big chance to get noticed as a radio talent?
This is a very big stepping stone.
This 9pm-12 timeslot has been the "audition" slot on the station (92.3, WFNY) for months.
We're on one night (Tuesday April 10th), and the immediate goal is to do a good show that night to earn more nights/a full week in the near future.
If we get a shot at doing a full week, the obvious hope there would be to turn that into a permanent job.
Even if we don't get *this* job, the great thing is that being on air with a real station (and real callers) will give us a real demo to send out to other stations. So no matter what this is a very positive thing for us. There's a huge difference between doing a podcast like we've been doing and doing a live show on a real station (in New York, no less). One is doing it's best to approximate a real show, the other is a real show, which is valuable experience. So on that note every night we can earn on air is very valuable for creating a real show demo.
And hey, even if this ends up being one night and one night only ever, I will be able to die knowing that for one night I had my own radio show in New York City.
And re: the podcast
It will continue in it's current format until further notice (i.e. until we're on air full-time). Don't expect any drastic changes there anytime soon.
Huge thanks to everyone who's ever listened, given me constructive feedback, etc. A few FOFC based people have been pretty important to us in terms of honest critiques over the last 9 months, and I appreciate it.

I hope you can take this as constructive criticism, and that you don't think I'm a prick for saying it.
But if I knew nothing about you guys, and just saw that flyer advertising your show, I would make it a point not to listen. And it's 100% because of you. It has nothing to do with your actual looks, but just the cocky look you're conveying.
That being said, I could very well be in the extreme minority, and maybe those with much more knowledge than me know that millions of others feel differently. And I hope that's the case. Good luck again.

I'm happy that they got through their first major speedbump well - the numerous callers hanging up, not there, etc... that throws off a lot of veteran shows I listen to, so it was nice to see them get through it relatively well and not let it effect the rest of the show...
I'm happy so far... I really like the drug camp bit, and particularly Jivin's insistence at calling it 'drug camp' instead of 'war on drug camp' ;)...

thanks for the support guys, we're freaking elated at how well it went.
1. We definitely had some early jitters, which were amplified by our board op really dropping the ball a few times. It happens.
2. 3 callers were people we knew, wade from here and 2 others (1 wanting to be a centuar)... so a very high percentage of real calls.
3. Hadn't seen the prom story here, as I didn't get a chance to see FOFC today since i woke up at 11.00 and left for the city at 12.50. Basically anyone reading the news would have come across this one., to me it was easily the best real news story besides Imus, which we agreed had been beat to death. The white kids dancing was the only funny thing I could think of... I think we actually could have done more with that segment really, good not great job by us i think.
4. Thanks for the support and some funny remarks in here. We're pumped, and really hoping this leads to more nights on the station soon. You guys will be the first to know if that is happening.

Now that you guys mention it i've had the occasional issue loading the stream from home. I should mention it to them.
Thanks to anyone who listened. If you missed it and you want to hear it, just PM me.
I think it's a Firefox thing. When it happened to me I loaded it in IE and had no problems.
Which is weird cause other FREEFM stations work fine for me.

Saw this news item this morning:
CBS pulls the plug on WFNY (92.3 FREE FM)/NEW YORK
FREE FM/N.Y. Stunting Into Flip
As ALL ACCESS was the first to confirm, CBS RADIO FM Talk WFNY-F (92.3 FREE FM)/NEW YORK has dropped its embattled Talk format and is stunting with a montage of NEW YORK-themed clips punctuated by the phrase "today at 5" excerpted from a TV news promo. The flip occurred after OPIE AND ANTHONY's show THURSDAY; the hosts noted that they had been told to attend a meeting with GM TOM CHIUSANO immediately after their show.

Yep. And to make it better, we actually secured the 9-12 spot earlier this week. We were to start on Tuesday.

Sorry to hear this, CT. I did catch your first broadcast, and I enjoyed it.
I enjoyed the talk format on 102.7, and on 92.3. Somehow, an incident on the flagship program (plus the mediocre ratings of the 2nd-tier shows) seems to blow it all to hell all of a sudden.
Hopefully like Free-FM before it, they'll attempt to ressurect this format in NYC in a couple of years...

The bright side is that you got your shot before this happened. That can only help if you want to try to keep this thing going somewhere else.

El Hefe and J-Dubs bounced around for a long time before landing a gig - got any contacts that could put you in touch with them and get some leads?

Welcome to radio.
And no, I'm not being insensitive in the least (before anybody starts to strip a gear over that comment). That's a major league quality suckass situation ... but it's also a pretty darned good object lesson in what a bitch the business is when you get right down to it. Just about every person I've ever known in the industry has been screwed by either an ownership change, a format flip, or both. I will say, however, that you managed to get that notch on your gunbelt quicker than just about anybody I can recall.
Air talent are like baseball managers, hired to be fired. In your case, sounds like they held the press conference to announce your hiring .., then told everybody to stick around 'cause they were folding the team.
Shitty break, but hang in there if you still want to. There's always another job opening up somewhere.

quick ct & jivin update:
Any XM subscribers can check us out tomorrow (sat 8/4) night on XM 202 (The Virus) from 12mid-3am eastern (9p-midnight, Pacific).
It is not a live show though, so you gain no real benefit over waiting for this show to hit the podcast on sunday or monday. Just thought i'd offer full disclosure. the show was recorded thursday night (the closest to airing we could do it, for technical reasons on XMs end).
this may however lead to something live, and at the very least serves as a national advertisement for our podcast... so we're very happy about it.

Congrats CT... hope it leads to a permanent gig. Question though... if it did would that mean you'd be moving to DC?

well, lets dare to dream for a minute... id say no. Ron and Fez and O&A are in a studio 2 blocks from the one im sitting in right now... in fact i think all 202 programming comes from NYC.
but a full-time gig is MILES from my thought process right now. Turning 1 night into another night is the first step.

another quick ct & jivin update:
Any XM subscribers can check us out saturday night (sat 8/18) on XM 202 (The Virus) from 12mid-3am eastern (9p-midnight, Pacific). To be clear this is saturday night/sunday morning techincally.
Once again, this is not a live show though, so you gain no real benefit over waiting for this show to hit the podcast a few days later. Just thought i'd offer full disclosure. the show was recorded last night (the closest to airing we could do it, for technical reasons on XMs end). this time we actually phsyically recorded the show @ XM studios in NYC though.
I'm now fairly confident we will get a chance to do the show live on XM within the next month or so.

Good job guys, but please refrain from talking about anal probing or body parts smelling like Cheetos. I have too much of a visual imagination and I cringe when I hear these two topics.

The worst are the painful tortures and the horrible anal things. I have a phobia about my anus so I actually had to fast forward that last podcast where the discussion got pretty intimate about that area. I just couldn't take it. Almost threw up while driving (literally).

So... I'm going to say something that won't make you feel any better or probably fill you in on anything I don't know. I love homegrown radio personalities. I grew up listening to Chad Dukes as a frequent caller on The Sports Junkies. But, seriously? Big O & Dukes are competent at best right now. I'd much rather have you guys in the evening time slot.
