View Full Version : The Majors Dynasty - The Masters

Breeze
04-04-2007, 08:20 AM
Ok, It's a little late to post this and I'm sorry about that, don't know why I didn't think to do it earlier...

Anyway - here's the deal. The Majors Dynasty will be based on the real results of the 4 golfing majors. The way it works is, each participant selects 7 golfers in each tournament and your team of golfers will receive a point for how they finish in the final standings (first place gets 1 point, second 2 points, etc.) The team score will consist of the 5 best golfers (kind of like 7 card stud - where the 5 best cards count). If you end up having more than 2 players miss the cut, you'll get the highest score for making the cut plus 1. The only restriction is you can only use each golfer 2 times (so no Tiger in all 4 events)

I will post the winners of each tournament at the end of that tournament and the overall winner of all 4 at the end.

Enter if you are interested

<i><b>Unfortunately, because I was late posting this, I'll need all entries prior to 8:00 EDT</i></b>

Correct - the 7 golfers you have listed above are only for the Masters. I'll start a new thread before the US Open (hopefully several days before rather than just 1). I'll also post the overall standings (all 4 tournaments) prior to the start of each major.

If you are wondering it looks like for anyone that didn't have 5 people make the cut... you'll get 46 points for every open spot. (That sounds terrible, but if you only get 4 that make the cut at one of the Open championships that number will be MUCH higher because the fields are much larger).

Dr. Sak

Couples and Scott made the cut...look at the parings for today. Both finished at +8 so I had 6 of 7. Only DiMarco (+9) didn't make it.

Scott teed off at 10am and Couples was right after.

As it turns out - after correcting my mistake on the cut number - everyone had 5 players make the cut - so no huge team numbers were posted. In fact, the last place team is about 60 points behind the leader. That sounds like a bunch, but with the large fields in the open championships that deficit can be eaten up with the performance of 1 player...

Masters Selection Notes

- All 11 players chose Woods
- 10 of 11 chose Mickelson
- The 3rd most selected player was Singh
- 6 of 11 chose Els (so we get a missed cut for 1 of our 2 selections)
- No one chose Zach Johnson
- No one chose T2 finisher Rory Sabbatini
- The highest finisher to only be selected by 1 team was: Appleby (T7)

Masters Results

Lil' Breeze - 113 - with only 5 making the cut 'Lil Breeze was stuck with Immelman's 55 points (that alone made his score higher than the winner), he did get two of the second place finishers or this number could have been much higher.

bsak16 - 103 - only had 1 player miss the cut, but only had 1 player in the top 5 and no one else inside 20 (Weir finished at 20).

Mike1409 - 103 - only 5 made the cut and Olazabal was 44 points of the total.

Ryan S - 93 - See Mike1409, Casey was 10 places better than Weir - thus the 10 point lead.

Tyrith - 79 - Mickelson and C Howell 3 were the high scores here.

Craptacular - 79 - if Scott or Choi had just done a little better...

Breeze - 72 - Like Tyrith or Craptacular, but Weir was slightly better than Scott, Choi, and C Howell 3.

Sublime 2 - 65 - Goosen and Woods are a good start, Casey ends up being a great pick, they help offset Mickelson and Scott.

NoSkillz - 62 - all 5 players are in the top 20 (and he didn't select Goosen)

hoopsguy - 54 - last entry nearly wins the first event. two second place finishers and two 13s, plus Mickelson's 24.

tanglewood - 52 - the great start and the super pick of Appleby carries the day. All 5 picks in the top 20 and 3 in the top 10 (without Goosen). The two players dropped from the team calcuation, Mickelson and Oglivy tied for 24th.

Ernie Els (1)
Vijay Singh (2)
Retif Goosen (1)
Rory Sabbatini (1)
Paul Casey (1)
David Toms (1)
Adam Scott (1)

The course this year is supposed to be so incredidibley tough that I think this round may well be a shot in the dark. Why are the USGA so obsessed with a winner carding a 72-hole par? Just because we don't want the leader finishing on 20 under doesn't mean that you have to go the absolute opposite extreme.

To be completely honest the USGA hasn't done a thing to the course, if anything they have actually slowed the greens down a bit. For the members the stimpmeter rolls at 15 for normal play, for the Open they will have them down to a 13.5. They also have lowered the first and second cut of rough a bit.

Adam Scott: +13

Oops, Scott was only +6 yesterday, but 82 today has him at +18. So he is done.

Cut line is projected at +10. Here are names above that nearing the end of play today:

Harrington +13
Goosen +13
Garcia +14
Montgomery +18
Scott +18

Adam Scott +18 (oops...)

Well at least I got 5 players into the weekend, two of whom are well placed. But with the course playing as it is anyone who made the cut has a shot if they can string together a round or two like Casey did today. He certainly woke up on the right side of bed this morning.

Breeze
06-15-2007, 09:11 PM
Ok an overview of how the picks did relative to the cut:

Taglewood gets 5 - Goosen and Scott miss the cut - but he has a full squad for the weekend.

NoSkillz get only 3 - Garcia, Mickelson, Goosen and Monty leave him hanging. It's going to be a big number for NoSkillz with 2 missed cut numbers factored into the total.

Tyrith - the first two in his list miss the cut (Scott and Goosen) but the rest make it in - so he has his 5.

hoopsguy - has 5 - Donald comes up just short, as he is on the number and he also had Scott

bsak16 - gets 4 into weekend play. Donald, Scott, and Goosen miss.

Breeze - I get 5 - Donald and Scott (sound familiar) leave me hanging too...

RyanS - gets 5 - guess who misses...Donald and Goosen (at least he didn't pick Scott)

Lil' Breeze - 4 make it - Scott, Garcia and Donald miss (boy - those name sound familiar)

------------------------

Now the guys that were forced into rollover picks from the Masters because they failed to get their picks in on time...

Sublime - Mickelson, Scott and Goosens miss - so 4 into the weekend round.

Mike1409 - Has 6 players to pick his best 5 from on the weekend. Only Mickelson misses the cut.

Craptacular - like most, only get 4 - Choi, Mickelson and Scott are outside the cut line.

Breeze

Taking a look at the overall tournament standings...

Tanglewood - in first with 5 on the weekend schedule...(Els, Singh, Sabs, Casey, Toms)

Hoopsguy - who is in second has a chance to hang onto that spot with 5 on the weekend...(Toms, Oglivy, Howell 3, Harrington, and Sabs) - the overall lead might come down to Ogilvy, Howell and Harrington vs Els, Singh and Casey.

NoSkillz - was in 3rd, but will really drop with only 3 on the weekend.

Sublime only gets 4 on the weekend - so players behind that got 5 should make a move on this spot

Breeze - I did get 5 - if Baddeley can stay on the leaderboard and Zach Johnson can grind out a round, I could close on the leaders, but most likely I'll jump the two mentioned above, but stay 20 or so points back

Craptacular - only gets 4 so there will not be any major move, but he could stay close to this spot in the standings, but the points behind the leaders will get much larger.

Tyrith - will jump up with 5 in players in play. If Els, Singh and Furyk play well on the weekend he could find himself in 3rd (or higher)

RyanS - also gets 5 - substitute Harrington for Singh in Tyrith's comment and the same is true for RyanS (though he is a little further back and 3rd is about the best he could hope for in the overall standings).

Mike1409 - with 6 on the board this weekend he is a bit more flexable and set for a possible jump, but he's a way back from a poor Masters performance.

bsak - won't make much of a move with only 4 in play this weekend.

Lil' Breeze - will be hard pressed to stay out of the basement.

hoopsguy

Harrington missed the cut, which should definitely impact that analysis.

Tyrith is looking good with the Stricker pick as a sleeper candidate, as is Breeze with Baddelay with the leader after three rounds. And obviously the people with Woods will look terrific if he wins this.

US Open Results...

<b>Hoopsguy - <color=red>213</color></b> - We actually had 2 participants that only got 3 golfers into weekend play, but they didn't finish last, Hoopsguy did - in addition to the 64 points added for failing to have 5 players make the cut...he was stung with 51 points for both Howell and Sabatini, plus another 42 points for last years champion Oglivy. Thank goodness Toms played well and only added 5 points to the overall score.

<b>bsak16 - <color=red>195</color></b> - Only got 3 into the weekend so the 128 points added for the 2 that failed to make it hurt. In fact the 128 alone is more than the winner. Of the 3 that made it Singh (20) and Furyk (2) performed well - Zach Johnson (45) didn't

<b>NoSkilz - <color=red>186</color></b>- Very similar to bsak16 with 3 players on the weekend, but Toms (5) point made up most of the difference in scoring.

<b>Sublime2 - <color=red>178</color></b> - In addition to the 64 point penalty for only 4, was stuck with two 51 point totals from Els and Howell.

<b>Breeze - <color=red>166</color></b> - Woods and Baddeley couldn't help me overcome the two scores in the 40s (Zach Johnson and Oglivy), plus the 64 point penalty.

<b>RyanS - <color=red>161</color></b> - Woods and Furyk offset the 93 points Els and Oglivy added.

<b>Tanglewood - <color=red>137</color></b> - had all 5 make the cut, but two 51s (Els and Sabatini) hurt, Singh adds another 20. Did have 2 inside the top 10, with Casey at 10 and Toms at 5.

<b>Mike1409 - <color=red>132</color></b> - Got all 5 as well, but like tanglewood had 2 high scores to count - 45s from DiMarco and Olazabal. Also got two 20s from Weir and Singh.

<b>Tyrith - <color=red>128</color></b> - All 5 made it but he did have a 51 (Els) and a 42 (Oglivy). Stricker was a great pick at 13 points and Singh and Furyk added only 22 more between them.

<b>Lil' Breeze - <color=red>126</color></b> - Lil' didn't get 5 golfers into the weekend so that 126 total includes the 64 point penalty. He was the only person to pick 3 golfers in the top 10, Woods, Furyk, and Verplank. Sabatini was the other 51 points.

<b>Craptacular - <color=red>116</color></b> - Like Lil' Breeze, also didn't get 5 into the weekend, but of the 4 that made it - all finished inside the top 20.

It's sad that I didn't show up and still won. Honestly, I probably would have easily gotten rid of Mickelson (injury), Woods, and Singh (save those two for later). I would have kept Stricker and Scott, and debated on the other two. I probably would have added Jerry Kelly (gotta get those cheeseheads in there), since he's not even qualified for the Open Championship, and then still had him for the PGA if he was playing OK. Goosen and Donald would have also been likely additions, so good thing I didn't get them in. ;) Oh well, now I have to go without three of the big guns.

Damn, I get three of the top four and I still finish near the bottom.

Like golf, I'm going to leave it on you guys to report a penalty (if you used a golfer more than twice...) because that part of my spreadsheet needs some fixing and I don't have time right now to fix the formulas.

Here are the final results from the PGA

<b>Ryan S - 274</b>
Had 4 people make the cut, but then Sergio forgot how to count, leaving him with just 3 and they finished 32nd, 32nd and 66th.

<b>Breeze - 188</b>
I was sure I was going to end up with the worst score, so I'm glad Ryan was playing this week. I had the same issues as Ryan. 4 make the cut but one of them was Sergio. My 3 that were still playing ended up 9, 12, and 23.

<b>Hoopsguy - 150</b>
Had Woods, but no one else in the top 10, and only 4 made the cut. Cabrera's 10 on the par 3 did't help.

<b>Lil' Breeze - 108</b>
Had all 5 make the cut (I think for the first time), but no one made the top 10. Best he could do was get 3 tied for 12th

<b>bsak16 - 102</b>
Els (3rd) and Rose (12) allowed bsak to sneak in front of Lil' Breeze

<b>Craptacular - 65</b>
The only one that got the field figured out this week. Two top 10s...Els (3) and Verplank (9), Rose added 12 and Mahan 18. The worst pick for Crappy, was Goosen at 23.

I haven't done the math, but I'm pretty sure this tourny put Craptacular way out in front in the overall standings....

<b>FINAL STANDINGS</b>

Ryan S - 577
Breeze - 534
hoopsguy - 496
Lil" Breeze - 482
bsak16 - 454

and the winner is...

CRAPTACULAR - 328

Craptacular had a good showing at the Masters. He finished in the middle of the pack, but he was only 27 points behind the winner of the tournament. In the U.S. Open, he won, and the British he again had a nice showing being only 26 points behind the winner. Then Craptacular shut the door with the win at the PGA.

Of course Craptacular was helped by the fact his closest competitors Tyrith, NoSkillz, and Tanglewood didn't have an entry in the final tournament.

Guys I apologize again for not being more on top of this. I've been involved in a pool like this for several years, but this was the first time I tried to run it. Hope you enjoyed it, and I promise I'll do better next year (and hopefully, you'll want to play again next year).
