We're joining the ever-growing list of dynasties devoted to the excellent multi-player college football league run by cartman. The league is currently winding down recruiting: Our class, a small one, is full. Here are our signers:
**** cb Donald Hughes (#34cb), The Veritas School, MS, 6'1", 156 Hughes has a chance to start as a true freshman, possibly at free safety.
*** cb Tim Watson (#57cb), Ferris High School, TX, 5'9" 180 Watson will probably redshirt this year, and may also end up moved to safety. One of the two cornerbacks will definitely end up at safety, its just a question of which one.
*** de Harvey McKinney (#50 de), Medina High School, X, 6'4", 259 May get moved to defensive tackle, as we're fairly settled at end, and really thin in the middle. Scheduled to redshirt this year.
*** ot Steven Flores (#55 ot), Ozona, TX, 6'6", 306 May get moved to guard or center, but definitely looks to be a contributor on the line down the road. Scheduled to redshirt this year.
*** k Jim Wyman (#23 k), Terrell High School, TX, 5'8", 207 Thomas Smith is the incumbent, and has missed only 1 extra point in two years. Wyman will redshirt this year.
*** wr Sylvester Bailey (#130 wr), Granbury, TX, 6'0", 186 Scheduled to redshirt this year. WR was, and remains, a need position.
** dt Thomas Reynolds (#70 dt), North High School, IA, 6'8", 248 Scheduled to redshirt this year. This may have been a reach, but we don't have any good defensive tackles on the roster, and maybe Reynolds will turn out ok.

For those who don't know, DeToxRox runs the Arizona squad. Last year we played them at home, and lost by an awful lot to not much. The rematch this year is at their place.

I'm dreading TCU this coming season, but with the transfers they brought in, I'm dreading it even more the season after...

Mario Soto, Sr. 5'10" 192 Ran for over 800 yards as a backup last season, but faces some competition for the top job this year. He's the only halfback with any experience to speak of. Also one of the best pitchers in Reds history.

Post Training Camp Team Preview
Texas Christian took a small step forward in 2008 under new coach Sean Treacy, going 7-5 overall (5-3 in the Mountain West), but getting shut out of the postseason, despite a decent strength of schedule, and victories over all 3 Mountain West bowl teams. The fan base is cautiously optimistic for 2009, hoping to finish in the top 3 in conference.
Quarterback
QB was an unsettled position for the Horned Frogs last year. Jerry Rogers (http://www.fofc-bbcf.com/league/playercard/player10620.htm) did the best work, but was unable to complete even 50% of his passes, and his future may be at wide receiver or defensive back. Jerry Abbott (http://www.fofc-bbcf.com/league/playercard/player3003.htm), who sat out last season after transferring from Austin, had an impressive spring, and is the clear #1 going into the season. He'll be pushed a year from now by Richard Jackson (http://www.fofc-bbcf.com/league/playercard/player14077.htm), a similar (and similarly talented) quarterback who came over from Oklahoma.
Grade: B
Running Back
The most effective part of TCU's offense in 2008 came from the backfield. The top returning rusher is senior Mario Soto (http://www.fofc-bbcf.com/league/playercard/player3605.htm). He'll likely split carries with sophomore Billy Miller (http://www.fofc-bbcf.com/league/playercard/player10637.htm). Sophomore Frederick Lewis (http://www.fofc-bbcf.com/league/playercard/player10666.htm) will make his debut as the fullback; he looked very, very good in camp.
Grade: B+
Receivers
Sophomore Armand Simpson (http://www.fofc-bbcf.com/league/playercard/player10682.htm) and junior Mark Williams (http://www.fofc-bbcf.com/league/playercard/player2188.htm) emerged as the clear top two receivers in the spring. There's not much depth behind them, although one of the option qbs now buried on the depth chart may end up taking snaps at this position. Tight end will be manned by junior Stanley Smith (http://www.fofc-bbcf.com/league/playercard/player2717.htm), a solid blocker and skilled receiver, should be one of Abbott's favorite teammates.
Grade: B-
Offensive Line
Senior (and four year starter at tackle) Marshall Bond (http://www.fofc-bbcf.com/league/playercard/player3622.htm) leads an experienced unit; all five starters from a year ago are still on the roster. He's matched with sophomore Jerry Stevens (http://www.fofc-bbcf.com/league/playercard/player14273.htm), still a bit of a work in progress. The interior line is led by senior Clifford Moore (http://www.fofc-bbcf.com/league/playercard/player3625.htm), 320 pounds of mean, and junior Lance Lewis (http://www.fofc-bbcf.com/league/playercard/player10797.htm), both returning starters. The biggest surprise of camp was redshirt freshman Michael Allen (http://www.fofc-bbcf.com/league/playercard/player14328.htm) taking the job from Miguel Baker (http://www.fofc-bbcf.com/league/playercard/player3626.htm).
Grade: C+
Defensive Line
Still very much a work in progress, as the previous regime didn't do a good job bringing in talent for this unit; for that matter, Treacy hasn't done much better. The one known at this point is that Donald Cruz (http://www.fofc-bbcf.com/league/playercard/player10840.htm) will be somewhere on the line. He's big, strong, and fast.
Grade: D
Linebacker
The linebackers were the strength of the defense a season ago, and that figures to continue to be the case. Junior Kenneth Karr (http://www.fofc-bbcf.com/league/playercard/player2895.htm) started all 12 games in 2008, and piled up 87 tackles and 5 sacks. Juniors Bobby Collins (http://www.fofc-bbcf.com/league/playercard/player11419.htm), James Vasquez (http://www.fofc-bbcf.com/league/playercard/player3645.htm) and David Wood (http://www.fofc-bbcf.com/league/playercard/player3641.htm) round out the group. The school has high hopes for Michael Nolan (http://www.fofc-bbcf.com/league/playercard/player14423.htm), who transferred from Texas in the off season. Some observers think that he'll be the best defensive player in the conference when he becomes eligible.
Grade: A
Secondary
Another experienced unit, with three returning starters: Seniors Adam Esquivel (http://www.fofc-bbcf.com/league/playercard/player3653.htm) and Robert Holland (http://www.fofc-bbcf.com/league/playercard/player3052.htm), and junior Raymundo Scott (http://www.fofc-bbcf.com/league/playercard/player10957.htm). Chris Schneider (http://www.fofc-bbcf.com/league/playercard/player10980.htm) will take over at free safety.
Grade: B-
Special Teams
Junior Thomas Smith (http://www.fofc-bbcf.com/league/playercard/player11019.htm) will be the kicker, and sophomore Henry Simmons (http://www.fofc-bbcf.com/league/playercard/player11008.htm) the punter. Both players are considered among the best at their position in the conference. Armand Simpson (http://www.fofc-bbcf.com/league/playercard/player10682.htm) and David Poe (http://www.fofc-bbcf.com/league/playercard/player14489.htm) are scheduled to return kicks and punts.

Week 2, @ Arizona (-17)
Our opening game of the year! Arizona whipped us pretty good in our home stadium last year, so that line may not be as crazy as it looks. They're very much an up-n-coming team in the Pac 10, and better than us in almost every way.
First half: Our defense plays well, giving up just one big play and no touchdowns and forcing Arizona to punt frequently. Armand Simpson, punt and kick returner, does a nice job giving us good field position on almost every drive, but QB Abbott struggles, except for one drive which ends and our running game goes nowhere. Arizona halfback William Davis goes out with a thumb injury. Halftime sees us leading 10-6.
2nd half: Arizona puts together a ground-pounding drive in the 3rd quarter, taking a 13-10 lead. Late in the 3rd Quarter, Armand Simpson returns a punt 35 yards to the Arizona 14, leading to a game tying field goal. Arizona QB Chavez comes up huge on the next drive, though:

The game was awful close. I like our return yard advantage: 259-44. I don't like that they outrushed us 186-73.
Up next is a home game against Oklahoma, defending national champions.

Close game, your team is definetly solid. Our coverage is not very good, that'll change. A shame RB Davis went down for me, he was pounding it. I think you are the team to beat in the Mountain West if you can fix your rush D.

Week 3
#2Oklahoma (1-0) @ Texas Christian (0-1) (+12)
For our home opener, we have scheduled the defending National Champion Oklahoma Sooners. Last year we played in Norman, and got crushed. Although we played well last week, I'm mainly hoping not to get embarrassed today.
Our new QB, Jerry Abbott, has a mild concussion, and is benched as a precaution. Jerry Rogers takes over (you may recall he had a solid year last year as a freshman). We also have 3 defensive starters benched for academic problems: DT Donald Cruz, ILB David Wood, and CB Raymundo Scott. All 3 are impact players, so that's a pretty big problem.
First quarter: All Oklahoma. They take the opening kickoff and march down the field in short order, going up 7-0. We respond with a 3 and out. The punt pins Oklahoma back at their 48, and they march down to our 11, where they fail on 3rd and 7. The Sooners go for the kill shot, and run a fake, which fails!
Rogers finds a man open deep, and we find ourselves at the 40 of Oklahoma. Unfortunately, his next pass is picked off, and Oklahoma completes a big pass of their own - and they're back knocking at the door, on our 21. They take it down to the 14, and this time they do settle for the field goal, and we are down 10-0.
Our next drive, Rogers looks deep again, and finds Armand Simpson for a 47 yard gain, taking us again to the Oklahoma 40. A couple of running plays later, and we line up for a 49 yard field goal, which is good, cutting the lead to 10-3. We're getting absolutely abused in almost every way, but we're only down a touchdown.
2nd Quarter:
Oklahoma starts at their 20, and a few plays later they're in TCU territory again, at our 46. Our defense, which after the opening drive has settled into a bend-but-don't-routine, stiffens up at this point, and forces the punt, which puts us at our 3. Rogers has had some success with the deep pass, and on 2nd and 8 he finds Mark Williams on a 29 yard hook. Mario Soto then scoots for 11 yards, taking us to our 47. Rogers drops back and throws deep - again completing a long pass, this one to Mike Lowe for 44 yards! Two plays later, he finds TE Stanley Smith in the end zone for a touchdown! The extra point ties the game 10-10.
The two teams trade 3-n-outs, and Oklahoma is then forced to punt again. Taking over at our 8 yard line with 3:06 in the half, Miller rips off a 21 yard run, and Rogers hits Odonnell for a 30 yard pass. With 35 seconds in the half, Thomas Smith booms a 31 yard field goal, giving us the first lead of the game, 13-10.
3rd Quarter:
TCU gets the ball first, and the battle of the punters begins: Each squad gets a single first down in the first 10 minutes of the half. The home crowd gets a little crazier each time the Sooners fail to convert a 3rd down. Believe it or not, its TCU that gets the offense going first, with this beautiful sequence:
Oklahoma ball, Q3, 4-7-OU37 (05:05) 10-13
Chris Brandt Punts 40 yards to the Texas Christian 23 yard line, where it goes out of bounds.

We are up 20-10! Oklahoma gets a single first down on their next drive, and the final play of the 3rd quarter is OU punting, down 10!
4th Quarter:
The crowd going wild, Jerry Rogers leads the team down to the Oklahoma 20. Another touchdown wouldn't quite end the game, but it would sure make it tough for the Sooners. But, what's this, the pass is picked off in the end zone! Rogers 2nd int on the day. Nervous making time.

Offense: Medium Pass, Set: Quads, Play: Q-SE-playact-corner
Defense: Stop Pass, Set: 3-4, Play: 34-pass-DZ
J. Osborne has his 9 yard pass intercepted by R. Wetzel at the TCU 26. He returns it 4 yards
to the Texas Christian 30.
We put together a short drive, and punt the ball to OU's 13. They're able to pick up just a single 1st down, and are forced to punt from their own 31 down 10, with 6:17 left. They need to force a 3 and out, and they do, aided by a big 14 yard sack by LB Salazar. Our defense, which after a shaky start has been stout, buoyed by the boisterous home crowd, forces THEM to punt again, this time with 3:48 left, down 10! Our ground game is able to wind the clock down, and this game is over! We get the upset! TCU 20, Oklahoma 10

http://www.fofc-bbcf.com/league/boxscores/game719.htm
Some notes:
- Rogers was tremendous all game with the deep ball, 15-31 for 331 yards.
- Miller is now the #1 running back, as two games in a row he's been head and shoulders above Soto.
- SS Esquivel, QB Rogers, and ILB Collins get game balls.
- Sooner QB Jeff Osborne completed only 8 passes. Their running game was effective, but they had no play on 3rd and long that actually worked.
- Next week we're off, then we have a road game at Colorado State.

Week 5
Texas Christian (1-1) @ Colorado State (1-2) (E)
We begin conference play with a tough game at CSU. Abbott is still concussed, and listed as questionable, but Rogers was effective against Oklahoma, so Rogers starts at QB. Unfortunately, Rogers plays poorly: 13-31 (albeit 260 yards) and 1 pick. He also doesn't do much on the ground, supposedly his strength: 6 carries for only 1 yard. The biggest surprise, though, is that our pass defense lays a big ole egg, allowing CSU QB Anthony White to go 15-28 for 272 yards.
Still, this is a game we could have won: Our average play netted 5.4 yards, CSU netted 4.2. We sacked their qb 7 times, and allowed none, intercepted him twice while only throwing one ourselves. Somehow, though, it all added up to our first loss.

Week 6
Texas Christian(1-2) @ UNLV (0-4)(+4)
This is an important game for us: Starting out 0-2 in conference would be a disaster. Abbott is recovered from his concussion, so he starts at QB. RB Billy Miller is sidelined with a minor injury.
UNLV plays a vertical passing offense, so I tone down my blitzing, and come up with a scheme that hopefully means everyone is covered.
Abbott plays well enough, completing 17 of 27 passes for 195 yards. The real offensive hero, though, is senior running back Mario Soto, who gains 121 yards on 23 carries, including 2 touchdowns. Overall our running game works very well; backup Tim Hamilton rips off a 36 yard TD run in the first quarter, and totals 79 yards on just 9 carries. Defensively we do just enough to win, limiting the Rebels to 3.4 ypc.

Week 7
Army (2-3) @ Texas Christian (2-2) (-11)
This is the first of three straight weeks of home games. We are clear cut favorites, but I'm not so sure: Army is a tough team to get a handle on. The teams they've lost to (OK State, NC State, Notre Dame) are all very good teams.
Our pass defense, which has been shaky since the Oklahoma game, turns into a sieve in the first half, and we face halftime down 20-7. Jerry Abbott goes down with an injury, and in the second half we turn to James Olsen and Neil Griffin (Rogers was hurt last week, so he's out). Our two subs combine to complete 11 of 12 passes for 191 yards and 3 picks, and the second half is all Horned Frogs.
Final Score: Texas Christian 34, Army 23
Box Score: http://www.fofc-bbcf.com/league/boxscores/game659.htm
Game balls go to SS Adam Esquivel (6 tackles, 3 assists, 1 pick), OG Clifford Moore (2 pancake blocks), and backup QB James Olsen (8 of 9 for 175 yards and 2 tds).
Starting QB Jerry Abbott will be back next week, but hasn't exactly secured the job: He's completed 57.8% of his passes, which is good, but his td-int ratio is 1-4, which is bad.

Air Force (4-3) @ Texas Christian (3-2)
Air Force has been an enigmatic team so far, being up and down quite a bit from week to week. We're favored by five.
Abbott goes down with a knee injury in the first quarter after completing just one pass in four attempts. Rogers comes on, and our offense pretty much comes to a screeching halt. Despite cheating against the run, Air Force becomes the first team to really take advantage of our poor defensive line, rolling up 152 yards rushing.
Final Score: Air Force 20, Texas Christian 12

Not sure where to go from here. My top two quarterbacks have both pretty much failed to impress me, other than Rogers one game against Oklahoma. The bright spot is maybe overlooked RB Timothy Hamilton, who is averaging 4.07 ypc on the year. An expanded role might be in order for him.
We're now at the halfway point, and I'll have mid-season report cards in a day or so.

Overall Picture so Far
Pre-season, I would've hoped to be 4-2 at the midpoint, but thought 3-3 was a possibility. After the strong showing in Arizona, and the big win against the Sooners, though, I bumped up my expectations a bit. We're off to a disastrous start in conference play, my quarterback position is unsettled, and just in general I'm a bit rattled by my team's play lately. A bowl bid is still a possibility, and that's the goal we need to stay focused on.

Week 9
New Mexico (3-2) @ Texas Christian (3-3) (-11)
We're 11 point favorites, which is crazy.
Turnovers dictated much of the game flow this week. Thomas Smith boomed a long field goal on our first drive, and UNM fumbled the ensuing kickoff, which we converted to another field goal - so we jump out to a 6 point lead. On our next drive, Olsen throws an interception. On the next play, UNM tosses a deep ball that results in a TD. Our offense basically does nothing at all the rest of the half, and we find ourselves down 13-9, looking at 16-9, when backup RB Ken Parker blocks a short field goal try - and then Allan Hutchins, dimeback, picks up the loose ball and runs 77 yards for a touchdown! We go into the half up 16-13.
In the third quarter, we get two more field goals to go up 22-13. Our defense mostly plays quite well, until we give up another big TD pass with 37 seconds left in the quarter, cutting our lead to 22-19 (blocked extra point). In the fourth quarter, we ice the game with another unconventional touchdown, an interception return by CB David Poe.
I went with a platoon system at QB, splitting the snaps between Abbott and Olsen. Neither one impresses - Abbott completes 8 of 18 with a pick, and Olsen completes 7 of 11 with another interception, plus a mind-boggling 5 sacks. We got a bit lucky in this game - UNM's average play was 6.7 yards (!), and ours was only 4.1.
Final Score: Texas Christian 32, New Mexico 19

Game balls go to kicker Thomas Smith (6 for 6 on fgs, including a 51 yarder), cornerback David Poe (int return for a td), and wide receiver Mark Williams (6 catches for 100 yards).

Texas Christian (4-3) @ Wyoming (4-2)
We are favored by 5 against the surprising Cowboys, but for some reason I'm quite confident going into this game.
Wyoming's first drive is an impressive one, but ends in a missed field goal. After trading punts, we put together a good drive, and end up in field goal position - going for the win on the road, the fake is called, and it works, as holder Tom Rodriquez pulls out for a big 14 yard run. Next play, Billy Miller walks it in for a 7-0 lead. The first half settles into a defensive slugfest, but we get 10 quick points at the end on a field goal, and then a fumble recovery run back for a td with a minute left. Our defense gives up a quick td drive to make the halftime score 17-7.
In the second half, we come out and grind out a nice td drive behind the running of Soto, Miller, and Lewis, and go up 24-7.
A number of big plays by RB Ed Hall and QB Robert Spruill gets Wyoming back in the game, though, and with 9 minutes left in the 4th quarter we're tied at 24. We have a couple of chances to pull back ahead, but both Abbott and Olsen throw red zone interceptions. The game goes to overtime, our first OT of the year.
Wyoming has the ball first, and on 3rd and 1, Spruill throws incomplete. 4th and 1, they go for it - and Ken Karr makes the stop! Two plays later, Abbott completes a short pass to Mike Lowe, who scoots down the sideline for the winning touchdown.

Our defensive line was totally pwned in this game, but the linebackers and dbs mostly played well. Our offense was inconsistent. Game balls go to CB Robert Holland (2 picks), OLB Ken Karr (9 tackles, including the big stuff in ot), and RB Billy Miller (2 tds).

Despite some inconsistent play, we've won 4 of our last 5, and are in decent shape to get a bowl bid. Air Force won at Colorado State, so unless they fall apart they've got the conference locked up.

Brigham Young (6-3) @ Texas Christian (5-3)
The line is even. Last year, we upset the Cougars in their park, so they'll be itching for some revenge. They're a tough looking team - they've got a freshman QB, Peter White, who's completed almost 60% of his passes, and has a 12-4 td-int ratio. He's probably the best qb in the conference.
A sloppy first half (two fumbles lost) sees us go in at the break down 21-3. Our offense never does get going, as we continue alternating Olsen and Abbott. Olsen is like a statue back there - he gets sacked 4 times. Defensively we play fairly solidly, but this week the big plays go against us.

Air Force, BYU, and Utah are bowl eligible. We got screwed out of a bowl bid last year, getting shut out with a 7-5 record, so I'm hoping for a little karma. Next week: @ San Diego State. We're favored by 4. SD State's been an underachieving team all year, but this is definitely a dangerous game for us.

Texas Christian (5-4) @ San Diego State (3-6)
San Diego State's record is a bit deceptive, they're a quality team that's played a tough schedule. We're favored by 4.
A fumble recovery and a big run by Soto get us a first quarter field goal. After a 3 and out, Armand Simpson returns a punt for a touchdown, putting us up 10-0. Later in the quarter, a poor punt gives the Aztecs good field position, and freshman qb Fred Almeida takes advantage, completing a td pass. We come right back, driving down the field and scoring on a 35 yard run by Billy Miller, and go in at halftime up 17-7. Our defense continues to play very well at the beginning of the second half, and we get two more touchdowns, one a short run by Soto, and another a short pass from Olsen, to make our lead 31-7 early in the 4th quarter. At this point, we go into primarily a prevent type defense, and sure enough the game almost gets away. SD State scores three consecutive touchdowns in the fourth quarter. In the last few minutes, we're finally able to get a first down on the ground, and the Aztecs run out of time in their comeback.

Game balls go to WR Armand Simpson, LB Ken Karr, and CB Raymundo Scott.
We are now officially bowl eligible, but probably need to win both our remaining games to see the post-season.
Up next: Our final home game of the season, the red hot Utah Utes. We are favored by 5.

A couple of statistical milestones to watch for:
Junior wide receiver Mark Williams has 773 yards receiving, and could get to 1000 for the year.
Junior linebacker Ken Karr has 87 tackles, on a pace for over 100 for the year.

Utah (7-3) @ Texas Christian (6-4)
Utah has had a charmed season, winning several very close games. We are favored by 5. Their ground game is incredibly powerful, led by the incredible junior Jerry Reynolds and his 1762 yards. We're favored by 5.
The Utes get off to a good start, as Reynolds scores from 45 yards out on their first drive. Our defense goes into shutdown mode after that, as those are the last points Utah is putting up today. We operate our most passing-oriented game plan yet, and the deep balls work - we score 27 unanswered points.
Final score: Texas Christian 27, Utah 7
Box score: http://www.fofc-bbcf.com/league/boxscores/game472.htm
Game balls go to QB Jerry Olsen, who has a career day, passing for 334 yards and a td, and running for 55 yards and another td. Game balls also for WR Mark Williams (8 catches, 131 yards), and LB Joseph Smith (7 tackles, 3 sacks).
We have a bye week before our final game of the year, a road game against Southern Methodist University.

Texas Christian (7-4) @ Southern Methodist (5-5)
Thomas Smith misses his first attempt, but makes a 45 yarder later in the 1st quarter to give us a 3-0 lead, which doesn't hold up: The Ponies come storming back, tying the game on a long field goal in the first quarter, and adding a touchdown just before half. We go into the intermission down 10-3, and with zero running game. Third quarter, they drive for another td, and its looking bleak, we're down 17-3, and haven't really done anything on offense at all.
Our comeback begins when Ken Karr sacks QB Francis Walker in the end zone - now its 17-5. After taking possession, we add a field goal, making it 17-8 (that missed field goal in the 1st quarter looking big right now). Armand Simpson then returns a punt for a touchdown, making it 17-15! Now comes the drama - 2:30 to go, we've gotten the ball back, and QB Olsen is forced out with an injury. 3rd and 9 at our own 33, Abbott completes a 7 yard pass. 4th and 2, we go for it - running QB Neil Griffin comes in, but is dropped for a 6 yard loss, and SMU takes over on downs at our 34. They rush the ball three times for a total of 1 yard, forcing us to burn two timeouts. Their 51 yard field goal attempt misses, and we take over with 44 seconds at our own 33. Jerry Abbott completes 3 passes, 29 yards, 19 yards, and then a 19 yard touchdown to Armand Simpson. Billy Miller adds a 2 point conversion, and we pull ahead 23-17!
Final Score: Texas Christian 23, Southern Methodist 17
Box Score: http://www.fofc-bbcf.com/league/boxscores/game639.htm
Game balls go to WR Armand Simpson (2 tds, 5 catches for 115 yards), LB Ken Karr (15 tackles, 4 sacks), and OT Marshall Bond.

We finish up 8-4 (5-3), basically the same record as a year ago except instead of losing to Oklahoma we beat Oklahoma. Hopefully we get invited to a bowl - we find out on Sunday.

@ Southern Methodist W, 23-17
The following members of our team have won awards:
Jr. LB Ken Karr (2nd Team All-American, 1st Team All-Mountain West) Karr had a huge season, finishing with 109 tackles and 11 sacks. He was our defensive MVP.
Sr. CB Robert Holland (2nd Team All-American, 1st Team All-Mountain West) The captain of our secondary, he had 16 passes defensed, more than double any other player on the team, and led the team with 6 interceptions.
Jr. WR Mark Williams (1st Team All-Mountain West) 74 catches, 967 yards, 4 touchdowns. He was awesome, considering how unsettled the qb position was.
Sr. OG Clifford Moore (2nd Team All-Mountain West) 12 starts, 4 run blocks, 11 pancakes, 1 sack allowed, 3 false starts, and 1 missed block. His first half was legend, the second half of the season he tailed off quite a bit.
So. FB Frederick Lewis (2nd Team All-Mountain West) 35 carries, 87 yards, 11 catches, 148 yards, 1 touchdown. I need to find ways to get him the ball more, he's a playmaker. He also did a great job blocking.
So. DT Donald Cruz (2nd Team All-Mountain West) I was surprised by this pick, in 10 games he had just 6 tackles and 3 sacks. He is a promising player.

Skipping over the bowl debacle, we finish the season 8-5. Prior to recruiting season, we bring in three transfers from other programs:
from Iowa - CB James Baldwin 2.0/4.0 Originally from Houston, Texas, redshirted unhappily last year. Will have 3 years of eligibility with us.
from Kansas State - OT Kevin Ho 2.5/4.5 Also originally from Houston, Texas, also took a redshirt last year. Definitely a stud.
from Texas - OLB Richard Simpson 3.5/4.5 Second straight year that a stud linebacker has moved here from Austin. I am really looking forward to getting this guy on the field.

Recruiting update:
We've won head-to-head battles with Colorado and OK State for a couple of D-line prospects. Here's who we've got so far:
**** DE Jose Janes 3.0/4.0 - Junior college player from North Dakota, should step right in and vastly improve our defensive line. Will definitely play next year.
*** FS James Taylor 2.0/4.0 - From Kentucky. Could start as a true freshman.
*** TE Winston Collins 1.0/4.0
*** OG Aaron West 1.0/4.0
*** DT Cody Connolly 1.0/3.5 - At last, the run stuffer I've been looking for.
*** ILB Randy Feliciano 3.0/3.5 - Junior college guy.
*** OG David Doherty 1.0/4.0 - Will probably move to center.
*** QB Allen Lange 1.5/2.5
** RB Roscoe Wilson 1.0/3.0
** OLB Keith Williams 1.0/2.5
** FB Eugene Porter 1.5/2.5
** DT Gilbert Mitchell 1.0/2.5

2010 Team Preview
Quarterback - We're very deep at QB this year, and hope to finally have some stability after starting 3 different players the last two years.
Jerry Abbott, Sr, 6'2", 180, 3.0/4.0 - Transfer from Texas, was dinged up a lot last year and didn't play well when he was on the field (53.8%, 1079, 3-7).
Richard Jackson, So, 6'4", 198, 3.0/4.0 - Transfer from Oklahoma, expected to bring some stability to this position, as we've started 3 different qbs in each of the last two years. #19 QB coming out of high school.
James Olsen, Sr, 6'2", 192, 3.0/3.5 - Took a big step forward last year (59%, 1098, 4-4), after an awful sophomore stint (42.1%, 362, 3-1). Took a lot of sacks last year.
Allen Lange, Fr, 6'3", 213, 1.5/3.0 - True freshman, much more of a dual threat than anybody else on the roster. Will redshirt this year, and hopefully will emerge as the backup to Jackson.
Running Back - Our top rusher graduated, but we have two very solid options at tailback, and one of the best fullbacks in the conference.
Barry Wells, So, 5'8", 186, 3.0/4.5 - Transfer from OK State, went for 217 (3.6) as a freshman in the Big 12. Was the #21 RB coming out of high school.
Billy Miller, Jr, 5'8", 185, 3.0/4.5 - Most experienced RB on the roster, will probably split carries with Wells. Showed some promise as a sophomore (446, 3.84, 3 tds). Fumble-prone (4 fumbles last year). #27 RB out of high school.
Timothy Hamilton, Jr, 5'9", 185, 2.0/3.5 - Very solid third option, had some good games last year (171, 4.07). Not much of a pass-catcher.
Roscoe Wilson, Fr, 5'10", 198, 1.5/3.0 - Incoming freshman.
Fullback
Frederick Lewis, Jr, 5'11", 225, 3.5/4.0 - 2nd team All-Mountain West last year, very good run-blocker. Dangerous receiving option, as well (11, 13.5 ypc). #14 FB out of high school.
Frank Banks, Jr, 5'10", 228, 2.5/3.0 - Former starter, gives us an experienced backup.
Wide Reciever - We have two experienced, dangerous wideouts, but the backups have taken a total of 0 snaps. There are a couple of true freshmen who may get an opportunity to play, depending on camp.
Armand Simpson, Jr, 6'4", 170, 3.5/4.0 - Had a breakout year as a sophomore (49, 730, 4). Extremely dangerous as a punt and kick returner, as well. #7 WR coming out of high school.
Mark Williams, Sr, 5'11", 174, 3.5/4.0 - 2nd team All-Mountain West 2 seasons ago (44, 605, 6), and 1st team All-Mountain West last year (74, 967, 4). Williams and Simpson should be one of the best pairs of receivers in the conference.
Sylvester Bailey, RFr, 6'0", 191, 2.0/3.5 - #130 WR out of high school, redshirted last year. Very much an unknown quantity.
Jerry Rogers, Jr, 6'0", 203, 2.0/2.5 - Former QB, has started 8 games over the last two seasons, including our victory over the Oklahoma Sooners. Not known how he will adjust to WR.
Greg Palmer, Fr, 6'2", 193, 1.5/3.5 - True freshman, #89 WR out of high school.
Anthony Jones, Fr, 6'0", 177, 1.0/2.5 - True freshman, #80 QB out of high school.
Tight End - We're fairly loaded here, including a top recruit in this year's incoming class.
Stanley Smith, Sr, 6'1", 225, 2.5/4.0 - Had some academic issues last year which limited him to 6 games, and his receiving numbers were unimpressive (9, 88, 1). More of a receiver than a blocker.
Jeffery Taylor, Jr, 6'5", 235, 2.5/4.0 - Former starter, was redshirted last year in order to stagger his graduation and Smith's. May end up starting this year again, as he's a better blocker.
Winston Collins, Fr, 6'5", 235, 1.0/4.0 - #30 TE out of high school. Potential star down the road.
Offensive Line - The O-line was a bit of a disappointment last year, giving up 31 sacks and opening holes for just 3.56 ypc. We've lost two starters. I love the guys we recruited in the off-season, but most of them won't be ready to contribute this year. Still, I'm looking for improvement from this group.
Kevin Ho, Fr, 6'3", 309, 2.5/4.5 - Transfer from Kansas State, will have to sit out this year. Should provide a big boost when eligible. #15 OT out of high school.
Steven Flores, RFr, 6'6", 313, 2.0/3.5 - Redshirted last year. May start at right tackle this year. #55 OT out of high school.
Jerry Stevens, Jr, 6'7", 300, 3.0/4.0 - Has started every game the last two years. Didn't allow a sack last year. This is our best offensive lineman.
Michael Allen, So, 6'4", 296, 2.5/3.5 - Struggled a bit as a freshman, but has the ability to play much better
Frank Walker, So, 6'1", 316, 3.0/4.5 - Transfer from Texas Tech, should be a solid player.
Lance Lewis, Sr, 6'5", 295, 2.5/4.0 - Has started most of the past 3 seasons at center, but hasn't played to his potential.
Aaron West, Fr, 6'3", 299, 1.0/4.0 - #42 OG out of high school.
David Doherty, Fr, 6'0", 274, 1.0/3.5 - #56 OG out of high school.
Gary Irvin, Fr, 6'1", 279, 1.0/3.0
Douglas Jones, Fr, 6'3", 265, 1.0/3.0
Defensive Line - This unit has been a problem for several years now, but we hope to see enormous improvement this year.
Defensive Ends
Jose Janes, Jr, 6'5", 286, 3.0/4.0 - JC guy who we're looking for a big impact from. Chose us over Colorado. #17 DE in last year's recruiting class.
Harvey Mckinney, So, 6'4", 265, 2.0/3.5 - Started 11 games as a true freshman, got 5 sacks.
Michael Goldstein, Sr, 6'3", 272, 2.0/4.0 - Has started parts of the last three years, but amazingly has 0 career sacks.
Todd Johnson, Fr, 6'2", 244, 1.0/3.0
Defensive Tackles
Donald Cruz, Jr, 6'8", 297, 2.5/4.5 - Moved from End last camp, and now has a year of experience. #24 DT out of high school.
Thomas Reynolds, So, 6'8", 258, 1.0/2.5
Cody Connolly, Fr, 6'8", 259, 1.0/3.5 - #49 DT out of high school. Chose us over Oklahoma State.
Gilbert Mitchell, Fr, 6'7", 251, 1.0/2.5
Linebacker - Position of strength for our defense. All of our starters from a year ago are back, and we have some nice additions.
Michael Nolan, So, 6'2", 230, 3.5/4.5 - Transfer from Texas, eligible this year. Should be an absolute stud. #12 ILB out of high school.
Bobby Collins, Sr, 6'2", 234, 3.0/4.5 - 63 tackles in 8 games (7 starts) last year. #16 ILB out of high school.
Kenneth Karr, Sr, 6'1", 255, 3.0/4.0 - Our defensive MVP last year, with 109 tackles and 11 sacks. Named 2nd Team All-Mountain West.
Richard Peck, So, 6'0", 227, 2.5/4.5 - Transfer from Nebraska, may take a starting spot this year. #25 OLB out of high school.
Joseph Smith, So, 6'2", 235, 2.5/4.0 - 45 tackles and 5 sacks in 12 games (11 starts) last year. #27 ILB out of high school.
Randy Feliciano, Jr, 6'0", 244, 3.03.5 - JC recruit joins our program this year. May redshirt a year, as we're very deep.
David Wood, Sr, 5'11", 229, 2.0/3.5 - 2 year starter pushed to the bench last year.
Richard Simpson, Fr, 6'1", 248, 3.0/4.5 - Another transfer from Texas, will sit out this year. #15 OLB out of high school.
James Vasquez, Sr, 6'1", 239, 2.0/3.0 - 33 tackles in 12 starts a year ago.
Keith Williams, Fr, 5'11", 218, 1.0/3.0
Defensive Backs - Another area of strength a year ago, but half our starters graduated, and one of our best young players transferred to the MAC, and overall we're pretty inexperienced here.
Corners
Raymundo Scott, Sr, 6'2", 172, 2.5/3.5 - Has started 21 games in 3 years, hasn't been very impressive.
Donald Hughes, RFr, 6'1", 161, 2.0/3.5 - #34 CB out of high school. Good potential.
David Poe, So, 5'9", 182, 2.0/3.0 - Got some PT as a nickelback last year. Returned a pick for a TD in a win against New Mexico.
James Baldwin, Fr, 5'11", 184, 2.0/4.0 - Transfer from Iowa, ineligible this year.
Allan Hutchins, Sr, 5'9", 183, 1.5/2.5 - 8 starts in 3 years.
Louis Jones, Fr, 5'9", 176, 1.5/3.5 - #63 CB out of high school.
Safeties
Alonzo Flood, Jr, 5'11", 183, 2.5/4.0 - Transfer from Texas AM, eligible this year. Will play strong safety, and should be good.
James Taylor, Fr, 5'10", 178, 2.0/4.0 - #24 FS out of high school. Could start as a true freshman.
Chris Schneider, Sr, 6'0", 169, 2.0/3.0 - 3 picks in 9 games (5 starts) a year ago.
Special Teams
Thomas Smith, Sr, 5'11", 215, 4.5/4.5 - Has missed just 1 xtra point in 3 years.
Jim Wyman, RFr, 5'8", 211, 3.0/4.0 - #23 K out of high school, will take over kickoffs this year.
Henry Simmons, Jr, 5'11", 192, 3.5/4.0 - #20 P out of high school, averaged 41.7 (33.6 net) last year.

Basically 8 starters back on offense, 8 starters back on defense. On offense we're planning to start 1 freshman, 4 sophomores, 3 juniors, and 3 seniors. On defense we're starting 1 freshman, 3 sophomores, 3 juniors and 4 seniors.

That's not a bad starting lineup at all. I know I've got a couple of 1.5's that are likely going to need to start for me.

Season's about to start. Here's a link to our roster:
http://www.fofc-bbcf.com/league/reports/team49r.htm
Some roster notes:
I still haven't decided which quarterback to start, although I'm leaning towards either Jackson or Abbott. Whichever one I go with, I'll stick with him - I won't be splitting snaps between them.
At running back, I will be splitting carries between 1 (Wells) and 1a (Miller).
3rd receiver will be redshirt freshman Sylvester Bailey, as Rogers didn't take well to the switch. A more sensible plan may have been to move Rogers to running back, and move true frosh Roscoe Wilson to wide receiver. I didn't do that, because I didn't think it made any sense from a class balance point of view.
Offensive line is probably my weakest group on offense, at least for right now. There are some good prospects on the way.
On defense, the d-line looks good, but, like the o-line, is not very deep. This is an area that constantly concerns me, but looking around the conference, we're not so bad off.
My linebackers look outstanding, particularly Nolan. We're starting 2 seniors and 2 sophomores, and next year we should have 4 juniors out there. So we're solid for the near future at linebacker.
I'm a little worried about my secondary, but I should point out that last year I thought the strength of my defense would be the linebackers, and it turned out to be the secondary. So these guys may play better than I expect - I hope so, at any rate.

Honestly, your team should roll through the Mountain West. If you lost even once in coference I'd be floored.

Thanks, but don't jinx me!
I'm sure we'll lose at least once, but yeah. We've improved our roster tremendously from two years ago, and significantly from last year, while most of the competition seems to be treading water at best.

West Virginia (1-0) @ Texas Christian (0-0)
Our opening game of the year, hosting the Mountaineers, coached by Alan T. The Mountaineers are one of the elite teams in the country, picked to finish 1st in the Big East, and led by super-frosh Joshua Stewart (http://www.fofc-bbcf.com/league/playercard/player19062.htm). We are 9 point underdogs. They are far and away the best team on our schedule.
I surprise everybody by naming James Olsen the starter - I figure, he's a senior who played very well last year, better than any other quarterback I've had, and we're not real likely to win this game anyway.
The Mountaineers pretty much own us all game, out first downing us 29-13, outgaining us on the ground 124-60, and through the air 366-243. I had hopes for an upset, but knew it was more likely we'd get pounded this way.
Final score: West Virginia 38, TCU 13. Up next: A road game against Wake Forest.

Texas Christian (0-1) @ Wake Forest (0-1)
Wake is coming off a blowout loss to the powerful Florida Gators, and a review of their roster shows this to be a rebuilding year for the Deacons - they do have what looks like a nice freshman class, but most of those players are redshirting. I feel we should be able to handle them.
Richard Jackson makes his first start at quarterback. We have 2 players academically ineligible: DE Jose Janes (ugh), and 3rd string running back Timothy Hamilton.
1st quarter is a sloppy affair, with a lot of penalties. Early on we have a 1st and goal at the 5, but end up with no points (stuffed on a 4th and 1 fake). Thomas Smith misses a 42 yard field goal later in the quarter. We get 2 field goals in the 2nd quarter, so the halftime score is TCU 6-0.
On the first drive after the break, we get down to the 5, but again have to settle for 3, and its now 9-0. Wake comes back and converts a 49 yard field goal to make it 9-3. A bit later we get a big play, as Michael Nolan returns a pick 60 yards for a touchdown. The 2 point conversion is successful making it 17-3.
Final score: TCU 17, Wake Forest 10
Box score: http://www.fofc-bbcf.com/league/boxscores/game521.htm
We lead in first downs, 18-13. Richard Jackson played very well, going 13-24 for 218 yards.
Game balls go to ILB Michael Nolan (6 tackles, 1 int, 1 td), SS Alonzo Flood (6 tackles), and QB Richard Jackson.
Conference play starts next, as we travel to Las Vegas to take on Pumpy Tudor's Running Rebels.

Texas Christian (1-1) @ UNLV (0-2)
I have UNLV pegged as the worst team in the conference. We're favored by 11, which seems about right to me. Our first possession is a 14 play touchdown drive, and we eventually move out to a 10-0 lead. UNLV QB Jed Oliva gets hot in the last 4 minutes of the half, though, including a 77 yard touchdown pass, and the halftime score is 10-10.
In the second half, our defense dominates: UNLV's possessions go fumble, punt, punt, punt, punt, time expires. Richard Jackson gets his first touchdown pass (a 27 yard strike to Williams), and we get a couple more field goals.
Final score: TCU 23, UNLV 10
Box score:
http://www.fofc-bbcf.com/league/boxscores/game160.htm
Game balls go to ILB Michael Nolan (8 tackles, 2 sacks), RB Billy Miller (82 yards on 18 carries), and OG Frank Walker (3 KRB, 1 Pancake).

Army (1-3) @ Texas Christian (2-1)
Army is a decent squad, they beat Air Force in their park earlier in the season and beat us in our bowl game last year.
On the first play from scrimmage, cornerback Raymundo Scott picks off a pass and runs it back for a touchdown, and we are up 7-0. We get another big play later in the first quarter, when Army drives down to our 6 yard line, and we block the field goal attempt. Our offense does little to help, though, and early in the second quarter Army gets a td. The extra point is blocked, though, and we are up 7-6. Our first decent drive of the game, midway through the second half, ends in a Jackson interception in the end zone. The last two minutes of the first half we drive down to the Army 34, and line up for a field goal - amazingly, its blocked, and returned for a touchdown. Hoping to go in up 10-6, we are instead down 13-7.
After a gruesome offensive display in the 3rd quarter, including, we finally score on a 19 yard touchdown pass, Jackson to Sylvester Bailey. The score was set up by a 65 yard bomb from Jackson to Williams from our 2 yard line! Ballsy call, OC. We tack on a field goal in the closing seconds.
Final score: TCU 17, Army 13
Box score: http://www.fofc-bbcf.com/league/boxscores/game379.htm
Game balls go to DT Donald Cruz (1 sack, 1 hurry, 1 tfl), LB Kenneth Karr (6 tackles, 2 passes defensed), and the entire secondary (4 ints).
So far my defense is about where I thought it would be, maybe a bit stronger. The offense has struggled at times, and I think I have some clues why. I'll be adjusting my gameplan this week a bit.
Up next: A big home game vs. BYU, one of the power teams in the conference.

Brigham Young (4-1) @ Texas Christian (3-1)

That's right, a 1st quarter score of THIRTY ONE TO NOTHING. For quarterback Richard Jackson, of his first four pass attempts, three were long touchdown passes. The game was, of course, not over yet, and BYU does mount something of a comeback, but we pull away in the second half.
Final score: TCU 47, BYU 28
Box score: http://www.fofc-bbcf.com/league/boxscores/game168.htm
Game balls go to QB Richard Jackson (17/26, 296 yards, 4 tds, 1 int), WR Sylvester Bailey (4 catches, 68 yards, 1 td), and ILB Michael Nolan (6 tackles, 2 sacks).
Up next: The first of three consecutive road games, at New Mexico.

Texas Christian (4-1) @ New Mexico (3-2)
New Mexico is a team that worries me: Their roster isn't especially impressive, but they don't have any real weak spots, and earlier this year they beat BYU in Utah.
The game is a defensive struggle: Early in the fourth quarter, the score is only TCU 6, New Mexico 3. We manage to put together a 96 yard drive to go up 13-3. New Mexico gets a field goal to make it a 7 point game. Under two minutes, we're driving down the field to ice the game, and Billy Miller fumbles on the opposing 11. New Mexico QB Cameron Malone suddenly turns into John Elway, taking them 89 yards. Here's the pbp:

Mid-season report card

Jerry Abbott 3 12 7 58.3 4.5 0 1 1 79.5
Jackson is 5-0 as a starter. He's had one great game, but otherwise has just been ok. He's clearly the man, though. Olsen had a nice game against West Virginia, but is just too fragile to be considered for the #1 spot.

Jerry Abbott 3 2 2 0.7 1.0 0
Wells has done better than Miller, but neither has really done great. Frederick Lewis, our fullback, has been our best rusher, and I've gradually been getting him the ball more. Only 1 rushing touchdown total is a concern.

Mark Williams is having another good year, and may get to 1000 yards. Armand Simpson has been struggling, just 9.9 ypc. Redshirt freshman Sylvester Bailey has been a revelation as the third receiver. I'm still getting nothing from the tight ends, which I'm not sure how to fix that. Considering how productive my backs are with the catches they get, I'd like to get them even more.

The guards, Walker and Allen, have been great; the tackles, Flores and Stevens, have been decent; and the center, Lance Lewis, continues to underachieve. Lewis is a senior, and there a number of solid prospects redshirting, so the future looks bright for this squad.

Overall we're looking very good, with a 3-0 conference record, making us the only undefeated team in conference play. The upcoming stretch is going to be tough, though, with games on the road against improving San Diego State and defending champion Air Force.
