...hate it when you get sent on a 2-day course for work, and only a 2 hour period early in the first day is relevant to your job, yet you still have to sit through the next day and a half learning about things that you will never, ever need to use?

Being in IT security as well from the risk assesment side these days I can definitely feel your pain. I try to avoaid any training I have no interest in attending but sometimes it is unavoidable. In fact in week I got a five day course in Wash. DC for an ISO 27001 Information Security Management Systems cert course that I most likely won't use much at least not for afew more years.

Yeah, IT Security courses are a killer. Back when I was in regular ole' IT and attending courses there were plenty of things that I probably wouldn't need for my job but were interesting all the same, and then a few years later I might come across a time when I've needed to apply that knowledge... the stuff that I am learning right now, and have been learning for the past 4 hours with 10 more to go, on the other hand, is so damn specific that it will never be of any use to me because it's to do with a very different field altogether.

Having said that though, there are some genuinely fun security courses. I did a course on Digital Forensics that was hosted by a guy who works for the FBI, and that was a very fun and interesting 3 days, mainly just because of all the tools we got to use.

Meh. At least I got a lunch coupon today... Japanese-style seafood soup with a can of mountain dew for free (unless I count my current near-sleep boredom as payment) is something I can deal with.

Boring conferences can still be a good opportunity to network.

And by network, he means hook up with hot chicks.

Interestingly enough re: networking, I just got back from a coffee break in the course and was chatting with another lady in my class. She told me her company is looking for security contractors, paying $150 an hour, and gave me her card. Perhaps this course will prove worth it after all...

Its obvious she's either a pimp or is offering you $150 for an hour of sex. Either way, you've at least got to see...

I must admit that I found it a little strange that the card had an address written on the back of it and a hotel room key taped to it, but I'm willing to give this lady the benefit of the doubt. I had also assumed that the way she rubbed my crotch and whispered her erotic fantasies in my ear was some traditional custom relating back to her Asian heritage, but then I have been wrong before.

My original title for this thread was going to be "Don't you..." but just after I typed it I changed it because my girlfriend watches that damn Pussy Cat dolls reality show all the time and the song is now forever burnt on my brain.
