It's all out of love - I promise ;)...

One thing I've found is that KSyrup can get into debate and not make it personal or get offended. The equivalent to being able to argue with a buddy and then 30 minutes later you're out telling old stories over a beer.

So I tend to be more willing to go back and forth with him in a discussion than some other FOFCers.

I don't drink beer, and I'm offended by the implication. Go to hell!!!

The funny thing is, I've never had a drop of alcohol in my life... so, the analogy actually doesn't really fit for me either ;).

I seriously doubt that. Maybe you've never consumed an alcoholic beverage but surely you have taken cough syrup or one of the myriad other beverages/foods prepared with alcohol.

Yes Cough Syrup, but the foods the "alcohol" gets cooked out when food is prepared with say Cooking Wine or whatever.

So I'll grant you the technicallity of Cough Syrup and other medicines, but not with food prep.

Hmm, the DOA disagrees with you.

A study by the US Department of Agriculture tested six alcohol-containing recipes and determined that alcohol has tremendous staying power!

A myth long treasured by people who shouldn’t drink is that heat boils away all the alcohol in wine, brandy or rum, leaving only flavoring. The Mayo Clinic Health Letter (December 2000) warns that this is a fallacy.

When your Baked Alaska or Cherries Jubilee is ignited tableside, about 75% of the alcohol still remains when you are served. If the alcohol is stirred into a dish and baked for an hour, 25 percent remains when the dish is served. Forty-five percent of the dry sherry lingers in a meal of scalloped oysters after 25 minutes of cooking. And a trace of burgundy wine is still present after simmering a pot roast for 2-1/2 hours.

So beware of those currently popular Jack Daniel marinated steaks. If you have been advised to consume no alcohol at all, it’s best to avoid recipes calling for it, or use a substitute such as lemon juice or vinegar. If you’re hosting guests for a dinner party, definitely stay away from alcohol-added recipes – one of your guests just may be a recovering alcoholic!

FWIW, I have a great uncle who used to be an alcoholic. When I was a kid, he just decided to stop. No hitting rock bottom, no disintegrating family life or anything. He just got tired of being drunk.

Anyway, he's been around 30 years sober and I can remember him drinking the non alcoholic beers but flat out refusing food cooked in alcohol. He knew that it didn't all cook away.

This is how I became aware of the myth.

ps: Chip is one great guy and pretty amazing. He was a liquor distributor when he quit drinking and he kept that job until he retired. Not many recovering alcoholics could face that temptation daily I'd imagine but really, I don't have a cite for that or anything so it may well be wrong.

But does he know that "Non-alcoholic" beers actually have alcohol in them? Not a ton, but some. That's why you still have to be 21 to purchase them...

I guess not. :D

It might explain the 4 cases a night O'Doul's habit he developed. ;)

I'm kidding.
