I had a question for anyone that wanted to answer...
Can you breathe out of both nostrils the majority of the time? I find that for myself, only after showers and sometimes when it's really chilly in the room can I breathe normally out of both nostrils. The other times, one is usually plugged up. When I wake up, it's very noticeable.
I asked my family and they said that they CAN breathe out of both nostrils the majority of the time. For me, it doesn't matter whether I have a cold or not. Kind of a daily thing.
So, can anyone give insight to this? :)

I believe that you generally have a primary nostril although it changes during the day.

If one of your nostrils always seems plugged up, you probably have an issue.

It changes. It's not always the same nostril. And I can feel air going in and out... but if I had to depend on that nostril to breathe, I wouldn't last very long lol.
Have you been tested for allergies?

Yeah, when I have a cold, my good nostril usually changes too. But most of the time, I can breathe out of both... my brother couldn't and he had to have sinus surgery.

You might want to consider getting tested for allergies. Usually, waking up with stuff in your nose indicates that you may be allergic to something. I had similar issues as did my sister. I was tested, changed to hypo-allergenic pillows and added in some Claritin and I don't have any nasal problems anymore.

Yep, allergies. I have this problem at certain points during the year. And most of the time, I wake up with a certain amount of stuffiness, but it usually goes away.

According to my ENT doc, is rather common to only breathe out of 1 nostril at a time, but it could indicate you have a deviated septum (as I do), or other issues -- especially if the other nostril is completely blocked (mine usually isn't).

I'll pay more attention to my nose breathing now then... getting tested for allergies might be the best thing to do.
Thanks.

When one is plugged up, if you lie on your side does it switch to the other one?

I would second the deviated septum diagnosis. Not because I actually have a clue what I'm talking about, but I had a friend who had it. I was amazed when we were sitting around a table where we used to work, and he asked us "Hey, can you guys actually breathe out of your nose?"
He ended up going to a doctor, was told he had a deviated septum, and had surgery to fix it. He was 100% after that, and couldn't believe what it was like to breathe out of your nose.

I usually have one nostril that's at least partially plugged. I also have fairly constant sinus headaches. I sleep much better after popping a Claritin D, but hate the effect the meth drug has on me (I wake up about an hour after falling asleep suddenly very much aware of the fact that I will die one day... Not easy to fall back asleep when you're looking at your hand as you move it realizing that one day it will be dead, rotting tissue!)
Also, if I close my nostrils and blow air out my nose, it comes out my tear ducts... Once, I sneezed and a bubble blew up from my tear duct!

After reading that description, I'm going to go pop some Claritin and hope it kills me.

I have never in my entire life been able to breathe out of both nostrils. Usually one is clear, the other completely blocked. Can't even blow it clear. The nostril I can breathe out of changes constantly.
I have not seen a doctor for it (they'd probably just give me Motrin, since they love giving that shit out) but I've found that Vics Nasal Spray is the only thing that clears them both, though it only keeps them clear for about 20 minutes.

Yep, I'm the same way - I have one that I breath out of at any given time, and the other is clogged, and these alternate. On very rare occasions can I breath out of both simultaneously.

When I was a kid, I could never breathe out of my nose - was tested for everything from alergies to ashma and they couldn't figure it out. One day, my dentist noticed that I was missing 2 teeth and did a full x-ray. Apperently, 2 of my top teeth were sitting on the roots of my other teeth blocking the airway through my nose. Simple little surgery - never have had a problem since.
