I'm still amazed that gasoline is less expensive than what people are spending on water these days.

Bottled water is so stupid. How do companies get off charging that much for freakin water?!?!

Sorry. Had to vent.

JasonTobiasIV

Because in some places water makes people sick.

And that is the real tragedy.

The cheap stuff is around $1.70-$1.80 per gallon here.

Nowhere in the US is the public water bad enough to harm you. Except for that place near Boston (Woburn, I think it's called). Of course even that place has been cleaned up, now.

In fact, there have been tests that show that many people's tap water is more healthy than the stuff sold in bottles.

$1.73 here in Tallahassee. Across the Georgia border, 9 miles away, it's about $.25 cheaper. Still not worth the drive.

As for water, I've been a fan of bottled/purified water since the early 80's, when I lived in College Station, TX. The tap water was so bad it was brownish, and we used to use old bottles to catch rain water to water the plants with - that's how bad it was.

1.63 and I'm in New Jersey where I probably use half a tank just sitting in traffic. And I drive an SUV.

What the hell do you drive? The Monstrosity? Even at the $1.69 it was here (I still throw Plus in my Grand Am for some reason), it still only cost me about $22 to fill up my car last week.

Here's a little puzzle: Take the current prices and adjust it to 1980 dollars. Then compare that adjusted price to what we were paying back then (post-"enery crisis" years).

I get 400 highway or about 300 if i just am driving to and from home for class for about a month. I love those months where I don't drive long distance any and I have 20 or 30 days before having to throw down my $20.

It got as high as 88.9 per litre here two weeks ago. Now it's back down to 80.9. Gas is heavily taxed in Canada which serves to magnify any increase. The real piss off is that the oil companies will raise the pump price the second crude prices go up, but try to hold off on decreases claiming they have to use up old higher priced stock. They must make a fortune every time world price fluctuate. I think most people have caught on now, and that explains why the prices seem to come down a little more quickly than they did in the past.

$1.72 the other day when I filled up.

I think the real piss off is that in Canada we produce more oil than we use, yet our prices still depend on possible war on Iraq. Stupid global economy ;)

Thank god for Toyota Corollas that get 30+ mpg. It's at times like this that I'm glad I don't have a sports car or SUV...

Ok, I'll solve this one myself.

Here's the adjust gas prices from Iowa (1980-1995)

http://www.state.ia.us/dnr/energy/resources/data/images/graph33.gif

In other words, in 1995, we were paying about half of what we were 15 years ago (it's probably about 40% higher now but still below what we were paying) - and people are complaining????.

In California, it is a little more extreme with current prices approaching early 1980s level, not because of the gas prices themselves but because of the extraordinary taxes they put on each gallon of gas.

I'm glad I live her instead of Canadia (you know, the 51st state). When I traveled through there a couple of years ago, I made the foolish mistake of filling up in Windsor instead of Detroit (then again, there was the whole stopping at a gas station in Detroit at about 1AM issue so I just think of it as Mounty Protection Money) and it cost something like 50c more per gallon.

Then again, places like Germany charge $5 a gallon so we're even luckier still.

Whenever I am bothered by high gas prices, I think about how much all the SUV-lovin' folks must be paying, and it makes me smile again.
