Looks a lot like...widgets+google-indexing of your files, search results within it are displayed like google results, with snippets

I think that Google Desktop has been around for two or three years.

Yeah, it has been around for a while. I think I tried it out a year or two ago and didn't like it because it was too bloated. I prefer Copernic Desktop Search (http://www.copernic.com/en/products/desktop-search/) so I could do away with the widgets that cause the bloating.

or maybe i'm just a moron and stumbled across the link on the computer at work and didn't recognize it...i dunno

You don't have to have it in the taskbar.

You don't have to use the widgets to use it.

I guess I don't see the point of wasting precious taskbar space since I have a web browser open constantly anyway. Also, that damn thing has snuck past me and installed itself on several occassions, which never sits well with me.

As I said, it does not have to be in your taskbar.
