So a while back some friends of mine finally talked me into signing up for a MySpace page. I resisted because I figured it was primarily the province of teenagers, and what the hell did I, a 37 year old guy, want to do with that kind of scene. But hey, whatever - a fair number of my co-workers (primarily in their 20's) and some friends were on there, and it's another way to stay in communication with people.
You could argue that makes me sheep, and I can't really dispute that contention.
But here's the point of my post - a friend of mine forwarded a bulletin tonight. The subject? "Petition to have fuck the soldiers removed". The body? "Petition to have "FUCK THE SOLDIERS" space removed
What I'm wanting is your help in Creating a Petition to send to Tom to get the group " Fuck The Soldiers" removed.
Anyone who is willing to help please repost this bulletin and I will send a message to Tom from Iraq when I get there."
So I'm reading this and thinking, "c'mon - is there really someone that's created a profile called "fuck the soldiers"? I do a number of searches, and damned if I can't find anything that comes close to matching this supposed MySpace site.
And yet here is this bulletin that has "signatures" from 952 people calling for the removal of this supposed site.
Now, maybe there really was such a site, but it's not there any more. Maybe this campaign got it removed.
Or maybe there never was such a site. Either way, I highly doubt that even if there was such a site, that it just happened to get removed just prior to me receiving this bulletin and searching for it. Did none of these other people bother to wonder if this was really true, or did they simply assume it was true?
Reminds me of the random e-mails you'll get from friends from time to time warning you about this or that or complaining about something that is unbelievable - something that is complete bullshit. You know the friend - the gullible one that has never heard of Snopes.com and buys any outrageous story and passes it along to everyone in their mailing list?
