Premieres May 31st, taking place of Survivors spot for the summer.

This show has some good potential and of course its made by the guy who practically makes all these reality shows.

I'll be tuning in, just like I did for last summer's new show, Treasure Hunters(even though it was pretty bad).

There is one celebrity that I know of, Christian Okoye! :)

This show seems like a really interesting idea to me. CBS has typically executed new reality shows better than the other networks, and it just seems like there's a lot of potential to bring back some more interesting personality conflicts into reality TV.

the only thing that looks good about it is that it seems they may have people that think they are actually pirates.

Article from the KC newspaper:

Shiver me timbers, Okoye on the high seas

Well, the things you’ll do for $1 million.

If you haven’t heard, former Chief Christian Okoye will be competing in a new reality show on CBS called “Pirate Master.”

The show will be broadcast on May 31 and is being billed as “Survivor” at sea: There will be 16 contestants who will sail around the Caribbean on a pirate ship. Only one pirate will walk away with the $1 million booty.

So, will Okoye be ready physically for the challenge?

“I played professional football for seven years,” Okoye said on a CBS promo. “I still stay in shape. I work out four to five times a week. I’m in good enough shape to do this.

“And someone asked me a few days ago about what happened in my life that would make me tough enough to do this (reality show). I told them growing up poor (in Nigeria) and going through war and seeing some of the things I seen as a kid … if that doesn’t make you tough.”

Okoye, who made about $1.2 million during his last season with the Chiefs, said he is doing the show mostly for fun.

“Treat life as it comes to you,” he said. “Have fun.”

Okoye lives in California these days and runs a foundation for children geared toward education.

Watching this now... I had no idea Okoye was on it. My wife told me there was an ex-NFLer on, but I assumed it was some washout I'd have never heard of. Then I overhear this guy refer to himself as the Nigerian Nightmare, which leads to this exchange:

Me: Wait, is that Christian Okoye?
Her: I guess.
Me: Why didn't you tell me Christian Okyoe was on this show?
Her: I... don't know who he is?
Me (getting excited): He's only the second greatest Tecmo running back ever!
(Long pause)
Her: Ohhh.... well that's very interesting, I'll have to keep that in mind.

Pretty good show. I love the removal setup where the captain of the ship gets most of the money and can bribe the crew as well as boss them around. But of couse the crew can mutiny and boot the captain as well.

Okoye hasn't changed one bit. He was always a great guy and class act when he was in KC. You can tell that he's still a very nice guy, albeit a 270 lb. nice guy.

Basically its Survivor with a pirate-theme and slightly changed dynamics (a captain, nominations for ejection, etc), but Mark Burnett keeps the basic drama intact, even if this flavor seems to be a bit more scripted/edited than others.

That being said, I went in expecting complete cheese and found myself enjoying the show and intrigued by the dynamics - the money, bribes, power structure, etc. I think this one has legs.

The funny part was that the structure of the power quickly escalated the conflicts/alliances amongst crew members, much quicker than it happens in Survivor. I think the fact that they're all stuck on the same ship doesn't allow them to get away from the game as much either, which is going to result in a lot of tension by the end of this game. There's already some pretty severe jealousy and hatred amongst the crew.

Don't let the theme fool you. It's basically Big Brother on a pirate ship. The only difference is that the competitors all have money and can bribe each other to get alliances and buy votes. The den of thieves feel is really nice. Lots of greed and jealousy.

I should have guessed that it wouldn't take long to get to the staple of reality shows, the puking contestant. If you know you're going on a pirate show, and you figure that you're going to spending time on a ship, wouldn't you try to acclimate yourself to it so you won't get seasick?

I guess this is why I don't really watch many of these programs. I don't particular want to see or listen to someone vomiting while I'm eating. Besides that, though, I only barely paid attention to the program while my wife was watching it last night, so I guess I can't really give much opinion on it. I gave it about 10 minutes to hook me, and it didn't, so I guess it's just not for me.

Yeah, if Survivor doesn't work for you, this show isn't much different. I was hoping for something more along the lines of that NBC "Treasure Hunters" show from last year, not Big Brother on a pirate ship (which Mizzou B-ball fan accurately described it as).

I liked how the Rupert-looking guy with the beard very quickly went from bashing the Captain and saying he wanted to mutiny to saying he was going to shut up and toe-the-line when he found out the power was absolute.

It's funny, Survivor is considered the best of the reality shows, but it bores me. However, I can watch crap like Big Brother all day.

I'm thinking that maybe it's too refined/serious for a reality show, and that's what turns me off about it. It's like watching a daytime talk show...no one's interested in the serious shit. You want an outrageous, low-brow crapfest that's truly entertaining. I think Survivor needs to lower its standards before I'll watch again.

Pirates may be hot on the big screen, but they’re little more than ho-hum on the small one. Mark Burnett’s new reality show “Pirate Master” debuted to a small audience of adults 18-49 last night, becoming the latest new under-whelming summer show on broadcast.

“Pirate” averaged a 2.3 rating in adults 18-49, according to Nielsen overnights, placing a distant second to Fox’s “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader” with a 3.1 at 8 p.m.

The show was just 0.2 ahead of “La Fea Mas Bella” on Univision, though “Pirates” did get a solid bump from its first half hour to its second, rising from a 2.1 to a 2.5. Some of that can be attributed to the “CSI” effect, as a repeat of the crime drama that led out of “Pirate” at 9 p.m. averaged a 3.2.

The much-hyped “Pirate,” a sort of “Survivor” at sea, is the latest summer show with a low-rated bow. It finished 0.2 behind Wednesday’s debut of “The Next Best Thing: Who is the Greatest Celebrity Impersonator?” on ABC. But it was 0.3 ahead of the premiere of another summer series, “Ex-Wives Club,” on ABC earlier this week.

There are already way too many low-brow crapfest reality shows on TV. We really don't need another one.

I think the money situation on this show adds an interesting twist. The greed factor is kind of fun. Seems like the best way to stay in power is to give the money away and hope for a bigger payout later.

From what they showed, he seemed like quite the ass. I did find it a little funny that he really did do all the work and got crapped on. What happened to him wasn't fair, but anyone who hasn't been living under a rock for the last 10 years should know that fairness doesn't mean much on these shows.

Does anyone know the full rules behind the mutiny? It sounded like all of the voters would have to vote mutiny and the officers had to agree. Did I just imagine the officer agreement part? What happens if they don't agree?

Yeah, the host mentioned it to the captain and 2 officers in their quarters, but didn't mention it again. Later they made it seem as if a unanimous vote from the crew was all it took. Pretty confusing.

I watched this for the first time last night and enjoyed it. I figured I would give it a try, but it was rather amusing to me. I'll be watching it again next week for sure right now. With the utter garbage on for tv shows while all of the good shows are off for the summer, this one seems to be one of the better ones on this summer to me. It is ashame that Okoye got booted off though.

Man, hate to see Christian get booted so early. He's a great guy, which likely means he wasn't meant to be a pirate. :)

I do think Christian's words will end up prophetic. That captain is going to get booted in an ugly way pretty soon. He would have been better off not giving any money to the crew rather than the $200 that he tossed to them. It made it look like he was giving something because he felt obligated rather than actually caring if any of them got any money.

Richard Weed

The Cap'n is a dick. He made a couple of mistakes:

1. He didn't evenly distribute the money. He can't control where he sleeps, but he can control how much money everyone gets. It could be argued that he's not going to the end anyhow and should hoard all his money, but I think he'd make more lasting longer by divying it out than keeping it.
2. He kept his officers the same. While this may be a good strategy to prevent a mutiny, it wouldn't be much for his team, the ones who aren't officers, to throw a challenge so that they don't need to mutiny against him. Had he changed his officers to that Azymuth guy and Nessa, it would've shown that he rewards people who do well on the challenges.

I'm enjoying this. Cut through all the pirate crap and it's basically Survivor with a lower budget. But I'm really intrigued by the fact that the players get the prize money as the show goes on, and can use it however they want. We've already seen one secret bribe, wait until everyone figures out that they can buy and sell votes and the back-stabbing could really take off. It will make Yau-Man/Dreamz look like nothing.
