I'm finally starting to get serious about my diet and fitness after spending several years yelling "You're fat and ugly!" at myself in the mirror and one of the suggestions I've come across is to use the website www.fitday.com

I was wondering if anyone here uses it or have used it, if there are better alternatives, etc.

Never heard of it, but if you try it out, I'd dlike to know your thoughts.

I workout with a trainer 2-3 days a week (and workout on my own to bring my weekly workout total to 5 or 6 days/week), but I know I could be doing better, nutritionally (in terms of getting the right kinds of foods for me while I train, etc)...

I used it for awhile a year or two back. It's a pretty good site, the only thing I found was that several of the things I ate regularly weren't on the lists of foods, and a couple I couldn't even really 'create' by amalgamating the ingredients. So that was frustrating because I just sort of ended up guessing.

In the end though it would have worked if I'd stuck to it, but I got lazy. As with most of these things, the site can only be as good as you'll let it in many cases.

One thing I've seen about the site, and it looks like it is true, is that it greatly overestimates how many calaries are burned during the normal course of the day, and it was suggested that you set "Lifestyle" to Sedentary because of this.

Yeah, I've noticed this already in just trying to put in what I've eaten so far today.

I used it for a while for tracking calorie intake and found it to be very helpful. I think its much less useful for tracking exercise though. A site that goes well with it for adding other foods is http://www.dietfacts.com/

1. No fast foods, no excess sugars, no regular soda
2. Drink water, tea (diet), juice (in small amounts)
3. Eat balanced meals like chicken breast (I tend to cook with olive oil and some spices)
and veggies with olive oil and fat free Italian drizzled.
4. Mondays and Wednesdays (and I try to Fridays) - Lift for 30 mins to 1 hr.
5. Tuesdays and Thursday - I try to conduct cardio for about 30 minutes (exercise bike, drumming, walking)
6. Saturday and Sunday - I rest, when I go out, I minimize my alcohol intake
7. Snacks consist of nuts, fruits, I also eat the baked chips now and then
8. Once a week if I'm feeling a craving I will eat something not part of the diet (rarely fast food, more like some ice cream) but I find that as you go through it, you get cravings less. Sometimes my snack is some soup (fat free if I can)
9. Breakfast is egg white only omelete with some cheese (sometimes some ham), or predominantly oatmeal with fat free yogurt drizzled in it.
10.Lunch is on whole wheat bread, turkey and cheese with some mustard or reduced sugar jelly with natural peanut butter.
11. I drink a protein shake after workouts, I take animal pak suppliments prior to workout, I drink water.
12. I keep active, when I'm not active, I keep my mind occupied (playing CivIV, Football Manager, games that require addiction enough to keep you in place rather than distract, very little tv, and generally active things to do - walking dogs)
13. If I'm not into a full core lift day, I'll get the exercise ball and lift with dumbbells while watching tv (I also do bicycle kicks, crunches on the swiss ball, stuff like that, but I find a hardcore lift gets you buzzing with energy for the rest of the day, do it right after work, right away, and you'll be cooking for the rest of the day).
14. Don't overlift, but don't neglect a routine (starting back up is hard)
15. Read Men's Health, they tend to have some good things to do.

About 2 years ago, after my breakup and troubles with work, I could not believe I was 180 lbs (5 feet 7 inches). I didn't look big, but I realized the only way to do it was change (I try to keep a routine, but with a new job and my daughter every other weekend, I keep Monday and Wednesday intense to make up for lost time).

I'm down to 165 lbs, and around 13 to 17% bodyfat (I'm told 20% is normal).

Certain scales can measure for it. It's not 100%, but it can give you a range.
