I've been in MP leagues for a few months now. I've noticed a few things and was wondering what you guys think. First, what makes a great league? Second, which league has the highest level of competition. Third, what would it take to get a Champions League going and how would it work?

What makes a league is the people in it. The commish is kind of like the QB for me, the most important piece in the puzzle. But you also need dedicated GMs. Pretty graphics and stuff are nice, but not at the top of my list. You need a certain amount of participation. I'm not too fussed on boards cluttered with woffle just for the sake of posting, 5 or 10 posts a day can be great if the quality is there. But all in all it starts and ends with the commish for me. He has to care about the league and run it in a honest and consistent manner.

As for the highest level of competition, you might start a war here :) Simply put I'd say its the leagues with experienced GMs. You will notice a difference between new leagues and older established leagues. I have found the standard has risen in the new FOF2007 leagues quite rapidly, people learn quickly from their mistakes, so there isn't a whole lot in it, in my opinion.

What makes a great league is a great commissioner and GMs that are willing to talk a little trash. You can have great rivalries between crappy teams if the GMs engage in a little talking prior to the games.

The highest level of competition is tough to say. I would definitely rank the IFL and IHOF over the WAFL (my third league), but those leagues are both established leagues with great owners. Between the IFL and IHOF it is really hard to say. There are great owners in both leagues, but I have seen owners do more with less in IFL, but there are some pretty dang good owners over in IHOF. My record is worse in IHOF, but I have had much worse luck with the draft there than I have in the IFL.

IHOF is the best and most competitive.

The #1 prerequisite for a great league is an active commisioner with good communication skills.

The #2 prerequisite for a great league is active owners, who post often and take care of their team.

The #3 prerequisite is a sense of immersion. This is where the league website/art come into play.

The two hardest to acheive is #1 and #3. Very rarely do you have a league that has all 3. IHOF certainly has all 3. I think USFL is close to having all 3, though #2 is debatable.

It is amost impossible for a new league (a league that has not gone through 3 full seasons) to achieve all three, IMO.

The best leagues are the ones that give out rhinestone studded dildos to the league champions.

The league champs then commence chatting with the rest of their leaguemates with said dildo in their butts.

After many years, everyone will be chatting with a rhinestone-studded dildo in their butt.

THAT, my friend, is the mark of a great league.

And that also explains why there ain't so many teams who repeat, let alone threepeat...

You probably need to spend some time in the slammer to accomplish a three-peat without crying.

Rhinestone dildos are sooooo 2006. My league's champions are presented ceremonial felching straws. Tell me one of those doesn't look lovely on the mantle.

No one answered the Champions League question -- something like a unification title whereby all the Super Bowl winners from each league play in a winners league to determine the real FOF champion. If you wanted to do this every year, then you'd have to set it up as a one season only deal. You'd then probably need to have a complete draft and a rule against trading (since there is no future). Or you could set up a league with a relegation type system where the bottom teams lose their GM, to replaced by the next league winners. Yet another way to do it would be to allow the Super Bowl winners to import (or recreate) their actual teams into the Champions League.

Yeah.. we tried that. It didn't go too well.

But seriously, this is a good thread. I like Shane's ideas -- specifically #1, as that's what I'm working on bringing to the WAFL. I think that starting out as a new commish is making me realize that I can have a lot of ideas in my head about the way the league works, or just MP in general, but making sure everyone else is on the same page as me can be difficult, and sometimes it's hard to figure out what's best for everyone and the league, with a group that has varying levels of activity.

So what happened. October 25, 2005 is like the end of the diary in The Prestige.

Actually, i think the answer was in there. It's one year only, with a draft to begin. You assign places to leagues that are interested. THe league fills the slot how it wants, probably by offering it to the most recent Sole Bowl winner. If he declines, it goes to the Sole Bowl loser, etc.

Ideally this tournement would be run by Solecismic, with the results pasted all over their website. You're telling me guys wouldn't try to win THE league?
