FLORENCE - Robert Comer never flinched Tuesday morning as he was injected with a lethal cocktail of drugs that put him to death.

Comer took a picture of his daughter into the death chamber with him and seemed defiant as he smiled and maintained eye contact with his witnesses as drugs coursed through his body.

His last words were "Go Raiders!" and with that, his smile slowly faded until he passed out. His chest stopped moving after the third drug was given to him.

By 10:08 a.m. he was dead.

For a quicker death, they could have just forced him to play QB for the Raiders for a quarter. He wouldn't have made 10 minutes behind that line.

An iron maiden would be more humane.

I've been following the Comer case since he decided he wanted to die so I was glad he finally got his wish. The screwy part of the story is that he had to fight his own lawyers trying to have him declared incompetent for that wish and thus not letting him die. Luckily for him, he actually emerged from super crazy once he made the decision to die.

Another compelling point is how inhumane the super max prison they had him in really is but since he wasn't declared crazy that argument is for another thread.

In todays New Times there is a story about him and it includes parts of the final letter he wrote to them. It's not the same as last words or anything but it is pretty close and I think it gives good closure and explains a bit about his final words so I'm going to post them here.

"Executions are creepy.""Imposed death - violent or at the hands of the state is wrong. Murder is murder, no matter the name you give it...I don't believe in Jesus, have no urge to tell anyone to go to Hell (I'll be there soon enough) and telling the families that I've destroyed that I'm sorry on my deathbed, no matter how sincere I am, would just be written off as a load of crap.

So, they will either forgive me of their own accord or hate me. Hopefully, if they hate me, they will channel that to helping other victims cope. Wish I could help them stop the violence. In the end, it's all so very stupid."

"Just between you and me. I'm tortured in my mind, in my heart for all the wrong I've done.""No matter what is done to me, I had no right to destroy anyone's peace, anyone's life. How could I hurt, destroy like that?"

Well said, IMHO and not the words of a man who is insane.

RIP to the families you destroyed Robert and RIP to you as well. May you all find peace wherever you end up in the afterlife. In the end, you're right. It's all so very stupid.

It isn't the first fan lost in this fashion.

In 2000, [John David] Burks was given a lethal injection for the murder of an owner of a tortilla factory in Huntsville, Texas.

As part of his rambling, final statement, Burks, 44, said, "The Raiders are going all the way, y'all."

The Raiders, by the way, won their first division title in nine years that season, eventually falling to the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC championship game.

Government sanctioned execution is wrong and barbaric.

I guess that this thread wasn't created for that kind of discussion, so please ignore me.

I don't want to ignore you on this. :)

I agree 100% but I do agree that if someone wants to die, and especially murderers on death row, then they should be allowed to. That's why I was glad he died not because of any barbaric need to follow blood with blood like most humans. Oops, better change that to "like most Americans" since most human societies agree with us here.
