Mine is Dan Marino. I'm curious to see who everyone else likes. They can be from any sport.

Micheal Bauer would come in 2nd.
As for pros, I'd have to go with Jim Kleinsasser
Some guys who make it as honorable mentions are Dan Dickau, Torii Hunter, Major Applewhite, Kliff Kingsbury.

I'll be partial and say Josh Heupel. Along with Bob Stoops turned the OU program around from the worst stretch in history. The 2000 season was so unexpected, and made the trip to Miami even sweeter. Not the best athelete, not the most gifted quarterback, but he was one of the smartest. He was a winner and had a true love for the game.
I could have said Steve Young, from his glory days when I grew up watching the Niners. Maybe Jerry Rice for the same reasons. But Josh Heupel is still numero uno in my book.

But I'll never forget his 30 points and 17 rebounds in the NCAA Championship game v. Arkansas.

Joe Montana, with Ronnie Lott a close second.
It was very hard to see both if them leave the 49ers.

Being a fan of the Angels I'd probably go with Tim Salmon. Although, I've always liked Greg Maddux. A great pitcher who just goes about his business and he seems like a classy guy.

Interesting you should ask. Not five minutes ago I finished reading the autobiography of my childhood's favorite athlete: former Bronco Wide Receiver Vance Johnson.

Back in the day, when I was fairly young, I used to get a real kick out of watching Kyle Rote, Jr. knock everyone around. He was a soccer player - and was so much better than everyone else on The Superstars, that I just figured that he must be the greatest athlete the word has ever seen.
I can't think of anyone who has impressed me enough to take the top spot since.

All my friends were Marino fans. I love Marino too, but my real hero was John Elway.
Honroable mention to Boomer Esiason, met him once and he was a really nice guy. Fairly talented too, though he never had teams Elway had.

Pedro, Nomar or Michael Vick are up there. Maybe Lawyer Milloy. But I'll have to go with my signature inspiration: Michael Bishop.

Seeing as how nobody has mentioned him yet, and as how hockey is being sorely overlooked, I'll throw in my vote for Steve Yzerman.
Though I do know what you mean about Messier, we loved him in Edmonton, and still appreciate what he's been able to do since he's left.

I love seeing O'Bannon's name being thrown around by us UCLA fans here. Still love the guy, and I'm glad he's still playing somewhere. But my favorite player of all time was his teammate, whom my friends and I still simply call "God"...
...Tyus Edney!

P.S. Dargone, welcome to the forum from another big time Angels fan. We need more of us around, especially with all the disrespect we're getting from the pundits so far this season.

The question was "Who is your favorite athlete of all time?" None of these people are athletes. They drive cars. Does it take skill? Yes. Are they athletes? No. Neither are golfers, bowlers, dart throwers, billiards players, etc. All very skilled and coordinated, but not athletes. There are some athletes (Tiger Woods) who do these things for a living, but in general they are not athletes. I am sorry. It's like people who build models. Takes a ton of skill and talent, but they are not athletes.
