I see this starts this week (6/1 to 7/17), so I figured to get it going.
Rules:
Pick 8 Poker Players (no restrictions), 1 Woman, and 1 Player who has not yet won a bracelet at the WSOP.
Designate one player as your "Money Man". That person scores double points for you.
Designate one player as your "Main Event Champion". if he or she wins the Main Event, you automatically win the game. This can be the same player as your "money man"

5. David Pham
6. Joseph Hachem

Sounds like he just needs some time off which he is doing. Hopefully he'll prove valuable in the $50,000 HORSE Event which is actually HORSE all the way through this year. He's made 2 WPT final tables this year so it's not like he's playing bad, just needs some rest from poker for a little while.

I took a stand against all the 22-year-olds who cut their teeth in the Moneymaker Era. I think the group of them will do well, but I don't think I'm qualified to pick out which one(s) will do the best this time around. So I won't.
I was on top for two whole days midway through last year. Let's see if we can't finish the job:
* Mike Matusow
* Chris Ferguson (money man)
* Kathy Liebert (still a woman)
* Gus Hansen (Main Event winner - sure)

Just read that the "F-bomb" does not automatically give you a 10 minute penalty anymore. Only if it is used maliciously or directed at another player or dealer.

By the way, the traditional "Casino Employees" Tournament is not the leadoff tournament this year, although it will start (and end) tonight.
Instead, Event #1 is the World Championship Mixed Hold'em, alternating rounds of No Limit with Limit Poker.
451 players entered, this tournament will pay the top 45, and at the end of Level 6, 270 players remained. This is a 3 day tournament, so the first pay day will be Monday

Im curious, have TV ratings indicated that the poker phenomenon hit its peak and is on the way down?
Im amazed at how out of it I am versus 1 or 2 years ago. A lot of that had to do with a combo of real life and the slow strangulation of online play for me. I think it's been literally 1 year since I played poker of any variety, in real life or online. It makes me wonder if there were a lot of people like me who were totally on board and then dropped off or if there have been way more new viewers/players there to take my place.
I thought Negreanu was a fascinating read a couple years back, i couldn't believe how honest he was about a shitload of horrible personal decisions he'd made. That and his likeable persona really make me root for the guy overall. I hope he does well this year.

WPT and NBC Heads have been going down every year. I think the WSOP has been about the same the past couple years. The tv broadcasts must not be expensive to produce and that's why poker is still on. In fact, ESPN is enhancing its WSOP package this year to include:
- Increase from 26 to 40 cameras for better coverage
- Plan to broadcast in HD for the first time
- 32 one-hour episodes in total (10 bracelet events, 16 Main Event episodes, and 6 $50K HORSE episodes... in that order)
- Player chip counts during hands (About damn time)
- Some sort of new 3-D graphic that displays holecards, community cards, and players' actions
And here are the events they plan to cover and when they're on tv:
* July 10 at 8 and 9 pm: Event 1, World Championship Mixed hold 'em (limit/no-limit, 3 day event), $5,000 buyin
* July 17 at noon: Live pay-per-view of the final table of Event 55, No-limit hold 'em (the Main Event), $10,000 buyin
* July 17 at 8 pm: Event 3, No-limit hold 'em (3 day event), $1,500 buyin
* July 17 at 9 pm: Event 4, Pot-limit hold 'em (3 day event), $1,500 buyin
* or
* July 17 at 9 pm: Event 7, Pot-limit Omaha w/rebuys (2 day event), $5,000 buyin
* July 31 at 8 pm: Event 8, No-limit hold 'em w/rebuys (3 day event), $1,000 buyin
* July 31 at 9 pm: Event 13, World Championship pot-limit hold 'em (3 day event), $5,000 buyin
* August 7 at 8 pm: Event 28, No-limit hold 'em (3 day event), $3,000 buyin
* August 7 at 9 pm: Event 30, No-limit hold 'em - 6 handed (3 day event), $2,500 buyin
* August 14 at 8 pm, Event 31, World Championship Heads Up no-limit hold 'em (3 day event), $5,000 buyin
* or
* August 14 at 8 pm: Event 33, Pot-limit Omaha w/rebuys (2 day event), $1,500 buyin
* August 14 at 9 pm: Event 50, World Championship pot-limit Omaha (2 day event), $10,000 buyin
* August 21 to October 9, Tuesday nights at 8 and 9 pm: Event 55, No-limit hold 'em (the Main Event), $10,000 buyin
* October 16 to October 30, Tuesday nights at 8 and 9 pm: Event 39, World Championship HORSE (5 day event), $50,000 buyin
It's good they're going to start airing these in about a month. I like the HORSE tourney expanded coverage and the Heads Up tournament should be a better format than NBC's. I don't know why they have 3 events listed to air on July 17 and Aug 14. Maybe they'll see which has the best tables and air 2 of the 3.

My disclaimer is this comes from a very casual poker fan.
IMO, TV really botched the way they handled the poker boom. You went from not seeing much of it on TV, if any at all, to having it force-fed to you. It was great for the hard-core poker fans, but not much explaination as to what event means what or really any explaination of the poker tour schedule for the more casual fans. It was more of a "here's poker, watch it". I think this is a big reason there's been a dip in the casual fan's interest.
I will give ESPN credit, their poker coverage is generally excellent and the backstory they do on the players is fascinating.

Is it me or the pros that are playing the majority of the WSOP events are getting their chips in real early in the tournament. Looking at the results you'll see a lot of the top pros finishing in the bottom 90% of the field. To me it looks like they're playing an all or nothing in the 1st couple levels...

I think they are probably taking some bad beats because everyone at the table is gunning for them. I would think probably 70% of amatures would get their money in bad hopiong to at least have a story to take home with them.

Also, remember to look at how many players actually entered the event and how many are listed in the results. Often times websites like Cardplayer will only list the players that cashed and players that are somewhat known, so pure amatuers that no one has ever heard of won't be in the results. Like Event #1, it says 451 players entered, but only 240 are listed.

Daniel Negreanu Takes 3rd ($101,351)
Don Baruch Wins Event #21 ($264,107)
Negreanu limped and Davis pushed all-in. Negreanu went into the tank for a while, pondering a call for his tournament life with A 8. Eventually, he did call, and Davis' revealed the 55. The flop brought the 6 4 2. Negreanu needed running clubs, running straight cards, an eight or an ace. The 7 gave Negreanu an inside straight draw, but he was still in pretty bad shape. The river brought the 7 and Negreanu's run at the bracelet was over, just hours after holding a large chip lead. Negreanu came in 3rd, and received $101,351, but at this point his mind is surely stuck on the fact that he didn't win, despite playing well.

OK, we should finally be completely updated. I've also added points for Gavin Griffin who scored 16.212 in Event 8 and 58.924 in Event 13.
I'm doing pretty good considering I only picked 8 players. Not sure why I did that. Doh!

For those of you watching the results of the various WSOP events, I'm entered in tomorrow's (well, today's) Event #27, a $1500 NLHE tournament. Very likely will be nothing to see here, but if things get interesting, I'll try to post something here while on a break.

Middle of the road... yeah!
We still haven't gotten to the events that count yet - Big HORSE and the ME. Those two events figure to separate the men from, well, me. I remain hopeful.

Barry Greenstein, Greg Raymer, Mike Matusow, Freddy Deeb, Tim Phan, and Gabe Kaplan all cashed in HORSE which is down to the final 16. Also, Dewey Tomko and David Singer who made the final table last year are still in. Amnon Filippi is chip leader with more than twice as many chips as 2nd place.

The HORSE event is already the darling of the "poker insiders," who have been even quicker than I might have imagined to pretty much dismiss the main event as a lottery, and that the big HORSE event is the true "championship." A lot of people felt this would happen, but I didn't expect it to become conventional wisdom so quickly.
Having a widely respected cash game player win it last year probably helped, rather than some dope off the street. This year's final table which will clearly include a number of name players will likely solidify that impression.

I know I will be more interested in watching the HORSE event instead of the "main" event on ESPN. Especially with Deeb, and his humor, lasting all the way until the end.

Deeb usually makes for good tv. He made an unbelievable comeback last night. At one point 3 handed it was:
Bruno Fitoussi: 10,085,000
John Hanson: 2,280,000
Freddy Deeb: 1,715,000
I hope this come off well on tv even though it's limit poker the whole way. A lot of entertaining pros made it deep in the tourney like Negreanu, Matusow, Raymer, and Hellmuth so that should help. I agree that it should be better than the main event though.

Ok, here's what we're down to. Gus Hansen and Humberto Brenes are both out. The only name player left is Scotty Nguyen, who was amazingly only picked by one participant, and that is current #2 AlbionMoonlight.
timmynausea has a huge lead, but if Scotty makes the final table it can easily evaporate. There are currently 55 left, and Scotty has a pretty big stack ($3 million last I read.)
It's pretty cool that this is the 2nd year in a row where one player (last year it was Allen Cunningham) made a run deep into the tourney that put 1st place in the pool in jeopardy.

Hmmm... maybe you were including a few late busts from last night (Hansen, Seed?) but as of today's starting lineup of 36 players, I'm only counting Scottie Nguyen, Lee Watkinson, and Daniel Alaei. I guess 3 of 36 "name" players isn't bad, but it seems hard to look at the field as stocked with big names. (Alex Kravchenko has had a hell of a WSOP, but I don't know how well known he is/was) Looks like the usual lottery style to me, mostly.
Here's the field starting today:
2 1 Daniel Alaei 1,995,800
2 2 David Tran 10,280,000
2 3 Ray Henson 8,250,000
2 4 Philip Hilm 9,950,000

2 6 Bob Slezak 2,115,000

Scotty is on a roll. I'm sure ESPN is cheering him on. This is from cardplayer:
Ryan Elson had gotten into the habit of making several large preflop raises in the last few hours and usually it would provoke the desired outcome from his opponents, a fold. Elson raised to $375,000 from the button before the flop and Scotty Nguyen, seated directly to his left, reraised all in for $1,525,000. Elson went into the tank and Nguyen stood up from the table smiling. Nguyen looked over his shoulder at Johnny Chan on the rail and said, "This All-In drink made me do it baby!", referring to the energy drink that Johnny Chan is the spokesman for. Nguyen sipped on his energy drink and finally Elson asked Nguyen, "You wanna party? I call!" Nguyen turned over Ahttp://www.cardplayer.com/images/common/suits/spade.gif Qhttp://www.cardplayer.com/images/common/suits/heart.gif and Elson was ahead with 10http://www.cardplayer.com/images/common/suits/club.gif 10http://www.cardplayer.com/images/common/suits/heart.gif. The dealer laid out Ahttp://www.cardplayer.com/images/common/suits/heart.gif Jhttp://www.cardplayer.com/images/common/suits/club.gif 8http://www.cardplayer.com/images/common/suits/spade.gif on the flop and Nguyen jumped into the driver's seat. The turn was the 5http://www.cardplayer.com/images/common/suits/heart.gif and Nguyen needed to only dodge one of two tens left in the deck. The river brought the 6http://www.cardplayer.com/images/common/suits/heart.gif and Nguyen doubled up to more than $4,000,000 in chips. After the hand, the always happy Elson and Nguyen got into a conversation that attracted attention and laughter from both the rail and ESPN camera crews.
Elson: I've gotta call my wife now and tell her that Scotty took all my chips!
Nguyen: Call your wife baby, she come out here I buy her dinner.
Elson: She's eight months pregnant Scotty!
Nguyen: Ok, then you, your wife and the newborn come out here I buy you all dinner.
Elson: It better be at a nice restaurant, I only eat nice food.
Nguyen: Don't worry baby. I fly you to Paris for dinner and fly you right back.
Elson: I'm gonna hold you to that, It's on camera now.
Nguyen: If I win this whole thing, you come back and I promise I fly you all to Paris for dinner baby.
Nguyen continued to ham it up for the ESPN cameras for the better part of the last hour and tried to get almost everyone at his table involved in some way. "What about you! (seat nine) You from Manchester right?" asked Nguyen. "Uh, I'm from New York Scotty." answered Kevin Farry. "Oh, I got you confused with someone else. All white people look alike" joked Nguyen with a huge smile on his face. This brought laughter from everyone within earshot and Nguyen cleared things up by saying, "You guys know I'm kidding. I love white people!"
Just a few hands later Nguyen added to his chip stack again, this time at the expense of Tuan Lam. Nguyen raised to $280,000 before the flop and Lam was the only caller from the button. The flop came Khttp://www.cardplayer.com/images/common/suits/diamond.gif 4http://www.cardplayer.com/images/common/suits/spade.gif 2http://www.cardplayer.com/images/common/suits/spade.gif and Nguyen checked. Lam bet out $350,000 and Nguyen smooth called. The turn was the 10http://www.cardplayer.com/images/common/suits/club.gif and Nguyen fired out a bet of $470,000. "If you call this you don't like money man" said Nguyen. Lam apparently does like money and folded his hand.

Well, with the elimination of Daniel Alaei in 25th and Bill Edler in 23rd I can only see 2 pros left that I actually know-Scotty Ngyuen in 13th and Lee Watkinson in 14th. I'd like to see these two make it to the final table and Kenny Tran who is making a name for himself having already finished 5th in the HORSE tournament this year, he's currently 5th in chips in the Main Event.

One of the guys near the top of the chip stacks now, Ray Henson, was at my table in one of the Venetian deep stack events a couple weeks ago. Solid player, seemed like a nice guy... I guess I have someone to root for now.

Damn, the PPV is no where near as attractive now with Scotty Ngyuen out in 11th place. He lost 2 big hands, one worth about 6 million trying to raise on the river with 43 on a K54KJ board and his opponent thought for a while before calling the raise with 1010. Then one worth about 7 million when he had AQ and his opponent had 55. Flop is Q45. Scotty bets out the flop and his opponent calls. Turn is a K. Scotty checks, opponent bets, Scotty moves all in and opponent insta calls. This crippled him and he busted out soon after. Can't really blame him I guess since he is playing to win and not just make the FT, and was the aggressor in both situations. Would have been nice to see him try and join Moss, Brunson, Chan, and Ungar as multiple main event winners.

And Scotty is out.
Watkinson is the only "name" player left and he speaks about 2 words per hour.

From the sounds of things, "Rain" Khan may make the final table worth watching all by himself.
Hevad "Rain" Khan is one interesting dude. I first read about him on PokerStars Blog. Actually, what caught my eye were the deranged look on his face on multiple photos that were captured by Stars photographer Neil Stoddart. I heard rumors that Stars froze his account because they thought he was a bot. Why? Because he was playing 40 SNGs at once. He videotaped him doing that and sent a copy to Stars support. They quickly unfroze his account.

Rain Khan</center>
Khan has been screaming a lot, almost always at the top of his lungs. On Day 4, he kept yelling, "Bulldozer!" as he ran over his table.
I caught one hand that might have been one of the biggest hands for Khan thus far in the WSOP. Jerry Yang limped and Hevad Khan raised 500K. Yang called. The flop was Ad-Ks-Qd. Yang checked. Khan counted out his chips and gently pushed out a 650K bet. Khan had been deliberate about how he bet the entire time. Most online players have a big flaw and that's how they handle their chips. Seasoned pros will pick up on the slightest variation on how you bet when you have a strong hand, a weak hand, a drawing hand, or a stone cold bluff.
Khan had been unusually quiet for most of Day 6. He sat in dead silence as Yang counted down his chips then announced a raise to 1.65M. Khan looked at Yang, then looked at the board, before he moved all in for 1.825M more. Yang stood up as Khan sat in silence looking down at his cards. He avoided eye contact and sat still holding his breath as Yang went into the tank for a few minutes and stared at Khan.
"Get a read yet?" shouted someone from the rail.
Yang sat down before he said that he'd call.
"I got two pair," said Khan as he flipped over Kc-Qs
Yang shook his head as he sheepishly turned over Ac-6c for just top pair. Then Khan unleashed his inner monster.
"Hold. Hold. Hold!" screamed Khan as the volume of his voice increased as Laurie the dealer burned and then dealt the 5d. Yang was praying to the poker gods for help as Khan prayed that he would avoid elimination and double up. The 8h fell on the river and Khan went berserk. He jumped up and down and ran over to his friends on the rail. He looked like a player at Lambeau Field who just scored a touch down and dove into the stands at the end of the endzone. Khan looked as though he was ready to dive into the spectators and start crowd surfing like Kurt Cobain at a Nirvana concert circa 1992. Khan jumped up and down several times before he returned to the table.
"Thank God!" he screamed as he looked into ESPN's camera. "I play this game to win, not to lose!"
That hand pushed Khan over the 7 million. After being card dead for most of the afternoon, Khan woke up. He made the final table and when his name was announced he stood up and let loose with a few spastic moves and loads of screaming.
"I bet that guy Rain is amazing in bed. I hope he doesn't live in an apartment," joked Tom Sexton.
