View Full Version : Is ESPN Suggesting Someone Should Kill Barry Bonds?

their front page right now

Millions want Barry Bonds to break Hank Aaron's record. Millions don't. But could there be one "fan" who makes a crazed attempt to stand in the way of Bonds and his place in history?

could try to - yes, they are suggesting that.

SHOULD? not sure where they are suggesting it should be done.

didn't read the whole thing but it just looks like an article on the security surrounding the event.

It's actually a column. Starts off with the wide-eyed claim as on the front page, and then gets into the security aspect.

Seriously, ESPN needs to stop at some point. Not going to happen, but the descent into abject stupidity is ridiculous.

Maybe it's a last attempt to make people feel sorry for Bonds so they can justify their praise of him (you know they'll do it) when he breaks the record.

Hell, I'm a huge Bonds fan, Flere - so we'll disagree on that one. I just think ESPN's never ending hype machine is beyond absurd at this point. :D

No worries. FWIW, I didn't mean to come over all anti-Bonds there. I mean, I am anti-Bonds, but that wasn't my angle. It seems to me that ESPN have themselves in a bind. On one hand they want to report on the controversy, and on the other hand they want to put up the big happy celebration when he breaks the record. So it's amusing to watch them stoke the hype machine from both sides. :)

As long as they're not showing videos of dogfighting, its cool. I had bad dreams last night about dogfighting. :(

See what you do with Bonds is cut the back of the hamstring. He'll never come through on anything again. He'll quit the game.

Then he'll just go play in the American League. You barely need hamstrings to DH.

He'll just push everything to the left because he won't be able to transfer his weight.

You have to admit, the part of the article about the security guy accidentally shooting Hank Aaron after home run #715 is pretty funny.

It is not like ESPN is the first to come up with this idea. I'll be surprised if there is not one attempt to kill him.

ESPN, as an organization that publishes sports news, would be very happy if someone killed Barry Bonds. That would have to increase ratings/website hits.

I guess I could imagine someone with the right mix of insanity/anger/life-falling-apart could just lose it when Bonds gets a little closer and at least charge him on the field. Killing him, though? I don't think that's gonna happen.

they're completely wrong. they're trying to make the case that an ultra rabid baseball purist fan could possibly attempt to kill/attack Bonds. now, yes, there are some crazies in this world, but ESPN is trying to say there is a niche out there of people who are intense followers of the game yet are regulars joes who decide to take matters into their own hands. i'm saying that person doesn't exist. ESPN is trying to combine 2 different people:

1. the intense die hard baseball fan who gets pushed over the edge
2. a genuinely crazy person psychotic enough to take another person's life

2 different people. #1 is the type to punch a tree and break their hand or just get bombed at a bar. #2 is mentally crazy and that person is capable of killing *anyone*. could be Bonds, could be their neighbor. #2 is the one who decided taking it to the next level was necessary, home run record or not. #2 is the one you have to worry about cuz that person would kill anyway. that's not the person that can be reasoned with like #1 is. my point is ESPN is trying to tie that insane disconnected from reality person who is prone to psychotic violence with an emotional fan.

Solidarity against steroids - Pitchers should just walk him for every at bat for the rest of his career. It would be a mockery akin to his stature as a player.

Why just a few? Save the extra three pitches and nail him with pitch number one every time. Aim for the knees, maybe he'll blow one out while trying to bail.

Hmmmm, he is coming to Philly soon..... ;)

The guy wears platemail when he's hitting. Someone would probably have to tell him the pitch hit him....

Bonds' stat line:

DUI's: 0
Arrests of any kind: 0
Dogfights hosted: 0
Baby Seals clubbed: 0
Times he's publicly wished injury on someone: 0

I don't know..I think I'd rather have him to dinner than some of the people wishing he gets his knee blown out. That's just me though.

True, in that case head shot? That's certainly a big enough target, especially now after the "chemically enhanced enlargement" of his head.

I believe you. He seems like he's nice when he chooses to be, but absolutely refuses to pretend to be happy to see someone that he doesn't really wanna see. And that gets him in big trouble.

Or maybe not wanting to see a steroid freak break the record of someone who did it the right way and who has more class in his pinky than Bonds has in his steroid enlarged body.

If only we could go back to the days of Cobb, Ruth, Marris, and Aaron where stats where broken and made by players adored by all! Oh wait...

To the fan that cheers against record breakers because they don't like a player: welcome to unoriginal thought. You too will be shown as a silly over-passionate fan in a movie made years from now!

He's disliked to an unusual extent, and has been since before he was an MVP candidate. He's disliked not just by fans, but by his teammates. Surely there must be a deeper explanation than spite and jealousy - perhaps he's a genuine dickhead?

My suspicion is that he has serious psychological issues, but who knows.

Every era has had its "bad guys" and "good guys". Yes, by all accounts Ty Cobb was a horrible person, but that doesn't mean a player today can be a cheating dickhead and have people point to Cobb and say "well, he did worse things than (insert player here) did" and make everything ok. My five year old knows that won't fly.

Are fans supposed to cheer for a guy they don't like to break a record just because its supposed to be a feel good moment? If you don't like him as a player you have every right to root against him. It doesn't mean you're over-passionate, it means you're a sports fan. If its unorginal thought, I doubt anyone gives a shit, its sports not literature.

I don't like Barry. I don't wish him harm, but I won't be watching him break Aaron's record. As a sports fan I think its my right to choose who I want to cheer for and who I don't. For some reason with Barry people like to say its jealousy, racism, whatever. Did anyone ever stop to think that maybe the guy just isn't liked because of the person he appears to be and the things he's allegedly done? Yes, the key words there are "appears" and "allegedly", but this is sports and if you're going to hold it against people for making rash judgements you're fighting a losing battle.

He is a flawed human being that is doing remarkable things, and not hurting any other human being in the process. I won't be cheering for him myself, but for so many to cheer AGAINST someone like Bonds out of hate just reeks of as something that will end up looking, by in large, sad and pathetic to the neutral observer.

I am sure people who booed Roger Marris thought he was a legitimate jerk who didn't treat baseball the right way and deserved their distaste.

Why would pitchers want to show solidarity against steroids? When all is said and done, they may eventually be known as the greatest steroid beneficiaries of this era. The suspension data so far seems to be bearing this out...

Yeah. After all, he's the only one. And pitchers never do it.

So I agree. This is a perfectly acceptable way to handle something that's far more insidious in the sport than anyone wants to believe.
