Since my brand new home computer is about to arrive, I was thinking about getting some new RTS games to play. Now, I haven't really followed the scene for years, but I used to be a big fan of AoE:Conquerors and Empire Earth, so I my eye immediately fell on AoE III and Empire Earth II. Comments on these two? Other suggestions?

Thanks!

its been a while for me, so my opinions are a bit dated, but rise of nations/thrones and patriots was and still is my fix anytime in need an RTS

Supreme Commander and C&C3 are about as good as it gets for RTS games right now. Supreme Commander requires a fairly nice computer to run smoothly, though.

I enjoyed Rise of Legends.

Battle for Middle Earth II if you like the LOTR/fantasy setting.

Ditto. Both are excellent.

Rise of Nations was a lot of fun in its day. Keep in mind that I'm not an AoE fan ever since they couldn't figure out how to keep my catapults from crushing my infantry. Way too necessary to micromanage a fight. Rise of Nations is the near opposite of that.

Just wish I could tell my C&C3 units to return to base when damaged to X%, the morons...

I highly suggest either Company of Heroes (http://www.companyofheroesgame.com/index_en.html?section=&country=United+States&month=8&day=29&year=1972) or my personal favorite WarHammer: Dawn of War (http://www.dawnofwargame.com/homepage.php) (which the platinum edition can be picked up which includes both expansion packs for the price of the original game.). While some of my bias may come from loving both settings, Relic just seems to know how to do the RTS genre right.

Wow, lots of good stuff here. Thanks guys! I checked some reviews, and right now I'm very interested in Supreme Commander and Company of Heroes. Apparently, C&C 3 has not been released in Europe, at least not until now.

Question: do you think Rise of Nations (another which I'm interested in) will have some problems to run under Vista?

Supposedly there's a new version of COH coming soon (don't have a date). Complete stand alone version, but it may drop the price of the original if you can wait.

I got COH not too long ago on one of gogamers 48 hour madness sale. I have enjoyed the heck out of it

I'm still playing online C&C Generals: Zero Hour. It has the advantage of being cheap, bug free, and from what I have heard MP is at this point much better than C&C3. My friends and I jump online a couple times a week to play team games.

Just picked up the Platinum edition of DoW, (Only had the original, and it was cheaper to buy the trilogy than just pick up the two expansions.) because of this thread.

I've yet to check out the new single player campaign, but from what I've read so far its seems like a *big* improvement. Looks like it will add a nice strategic element to the game somewhat similar to the total war series.

I definitely sense some dynasty/fanfic writing in the near future if this is as promising as it looks.

Picked up the Gold Edition of Rise of Nations (base game+Thrones and Patriots expansion) on Saturday for the very cheap price of € 9.99. I know it's a 4-years old game, but this is the first time I play with it: amazing. Plus, it runs veeery smooth on my 2007 computer...:D And no problem with Vista, at all.

C&C3 = not good for me

RTS games are my favorite. I would suggest AGE of Empires 3, Supreme Commander or Company of Heroes. Dawn of War is great, but everything I play it I leave wishing they would just make a DOW2 with the Company of Heroes engine.

Yeah, I think I'm gonna get AoE III, plus the expansions, as my next purchase. Price is still high, though. C&C is not my kind of thing either. Supreme Commander looks fabulous, but I'm not sure about that either.

Anyway, right now I'm enjoying Rise of Nations a lot. Great game, perfectly fits my tastes.

Company of Heroes = hands down, one of the most engaging RTS games i've played.
