We have had three retirements from the team. WR Everett Rose, our venerable veteran, has hung up his cleats, after a storied career. And two defensive tackles, RJ Strikwerda and Mark Mahoney, have both departed. That might give us some work to do on the roster, but I don’t think either one was a foundation player by any means.
RB Fernando Navarrette is the lone HOF inductee – and if you’ve seen the league record book, you know why. He was an all-time great, it seems.
Since our coach and scout remain under contract, and are very affordable, we hold on to both of them. Good news.
Financially, our losses last year were much better – we lost only $17m, compared to $87 the year before. We’re on our way to financial respectability, as well as on-field.
On the FA front, we don’t have anyone without a contract who looks like franchise tag material by any stretch, so we skip that step.
And so, we are onward into free agency. We have advanced to the FA process, meaning that the files attached below will contain the new rookie draft as well. Let the analysis begin!

On defense I think our biggest concern is still the defensive line. I think we made some real progress last season, but we couls stand to put a better guy at the LDE spot and we really need to get someone who can play with Wolfe in the middle.
Defensive Priorities
1. DT
2. DE
3. LB
4. CB
I think the LB and CB needs are well below the other two. We couls use some bodies there, but our starters are pretty solid. We just lack depth in those two areas.
Free Agent Wishlist
DE
1. LDE Percy Foley, 3 yrs 33 mil
2. LDE Hunter Brady, 3 yrs 36 mil
3. RDE Riddick Finley, 3 yrs 27 mil
4. RDE J.R. Sheehan, 3 yrs 28 mil
5. LDE Britt Murray, 4 yrs 27 mil
I think there is a significant drop off after the top two guys here. I mentioned Foley in the previous thread. He is getting up there in age, but is just a monster pass rusher and still very solid against the run. Him and Davison would make up probably the best DE combo in the league.
If we are too concerned with Foley's age I think Brady is a good second option, but he isn't the pass rusher Foley is. He still put up very good numbers last season, is still very young, and is a monster against the run.
After those two I think any of the otehr 3 guys would be defeinite upgrades to what we have, but since they are asking for somewhat similar money I really think we should splurge and sign one of the top two guys.

Another guy I like who could replace backup MLB Von Hagel is SILB Ricardo Berry. He has the skills that fit our defense very well and is a pretty cheap option at 2 yrs and 4.1 mil.

Does he look like he would change positions without serious impacts? That can be damaging to vets.
Dola:
I'll try to take a look at things this evening when I get home. I've had a couple of busy days preparing for a major meeting tomorrow afternoon.

I don't think changes from S/WILB to MLB cause any damage to potential. But it can lower experience slightly. So that is something to keep in mind, but since he is just going to be a back up anyway I am not that concerned with it.

On offense, are we planning on signing C Issac Terry to the big contract that he wants (32.5 million- 5 years)?
I would see what we could possibly get for trading QB Houston, a 5th round pick or so would be nice. Also, I think we should strongly consider resigning WR Ed DeWalt, he has done ok for the # 4 WR in his 2 years here and he is asking for a 2 year minimum salary deal. FB Holliman, we can resign him to a 1 year minimum salary, I would suggest we do this and we could always cut him later if we happen to sign someone else. G CJ McAfee & C Cates are both asking for 1 year minimum deals, so it would be nice to sign those guys as depth. And lastly I think we should resign both our Punter & Kicker, both were respectable last year and it would be nice to just keep them around.

Is interest in this project fading or is everyone just really busy lately?
I think it's just everyone is real busy.

I am very busy, and will be...have a big test coming up tomorrow, then heading back to Louisiana for a very long Mardi Gras weekend...then the week after is spring break...so I will be busy for a while, but I will still participate as much as I can.

I think we should certainly resign Covington to a 3 year deal (he is only asking for the minimum and no bonus so we could cut him later if we find a stellar K to replace him)
I have no problem resigning Metz to his deal either but I want to point out that Reuben Gunn is a FA and is coming off of a All-Pro year. He will require a bonus while Metz will not but I think he could be a real asset to our team if he can continue his past performance. It may be worth resigning Metz and still pursuing Gunn?
As far as our return men go I think we could add at least one more Kickoff returner to compliment Jacobs though Baker remains pretty good. I think we should definetley keep our ear to the ground for any 85+ players in Kick or Punt Returns that may be good signings.
-IF we cut a WR or trade one we may wanna look at WR Donnell McKnight who can return kicks pretty well. Stanley Willis is also a pretty expensive option at WR but should be mentioned in case we make any wholesale changes to our recieving corp (and he is very capable of duties at WR also)
Other Return Options - Michael Ragsdale RCB
Note: While I was looking for return men I saw FL Richard Weber who looks to be very goog yet EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE. Certainly not worth the price but you may wanna look at this guy for the fun of it
For other Special Teamers -
*Isaac Middleton FS - a very good safety but also a good special teamer - I know we have anough at safety but just in case.?.?.?
Renaldo Garmon FS
Karl Linegar FS
Melvin Houston SS
Seth Bedford SS
Ron Clements SS
Dennis Blake WLB
*Jeremy Kolb WILB
*Lenny Crane WILB
Shannon Daniels MLB
Ronald Prescott SLB

Get a good look at QB Danny Rhodes, and recall how promising this guy looked back when he was coming off his rookie season. The moral of the story? FOF4 has an awful lot of players who never reach their initially-promised potential… many of them don’t even come close. (You could certainly argue that this is much more realistic than its predecessors)
I’m personally partial to the TE position, and I have to be pleased with our progress there. As promised, we got a very solid season out of Loftis, who has good receiving skills, and only dropped 2 balls all season (not bad, considering that’s his purported downside). He also has pretty solid blocking ratings, though it’s tough to see how much that matters at the position. (In this game, not in real football) And don’t forget about young Lamont Dresow, who is on his way to becoming a very adequate player… and if he has another good training camp, maybe better than that.
WR Corey Jacobs was solid as a kick returner, but we didn’t use him for punts. He didn’t fumble this year, either – and that was his supposed downside.
We have to consider C Isaac Terry, our breakout pick in the late 1990 draft. His contract is out, so he is a restricted FA. He is seeking pretty big money, which will come down a bit by the end of the FA process – but it still will be costly to retain him, probably at least $4-5m per year. The downside of using him last year was that his stats from then boost his demands now – so there’s no flying in under the radar with him. Might be a tough call.
As for DE Davison… whoa. 17 sacks and 18 hurries last year. This guy is the real deal, yes? Having him for two more seasons at $7m per seems like a deal, even though that’s a big ticket.
If we are going to pursue DE this year, maybe we have to slough off some of the current crop. I wonder whether we are getting our best use out of DE Doug Rome – he saw only 197 pass plays last year, less than 40% of the total that we faced. We’re paying this guy $3.5m to be our complementary pass rusher (at least that’s what we suggested when we picked him up) and we’re not even getting him on the field very much. If he’s no better than Gabe Blow, the guy who seems to have gotten most of the “other” playing time in his stead, then we need to reconsider our commitment to him. Or, perhaps, wipe out both of the aforementioned guys and their $4-5m salary this year, and eat some bonus hit, in order to bring in a top-flight alternative.
We got a quietly very good season from our newest LB signing, Donnell Wilkerson. He only played in 489 plays, but made 58+20 tackles – 16.5% of the team total. He also didn’t embarrass himself in coverage, either. Decent season – we’re paying for him (over $5 million) but he seems to be doing pretty well. (Now, maybe we need to get him to stay on the field more often?)
WLB Alan Martinez hasn’t lived up to billing, but he still shows promise – and the set of plays he has seen on field is still pretty small.
- - -
Free Agents:
FB D.J. Fuld doesn’t look like a terrible way to spend 3 or 4 million. Depends how we feel about our young guys there – I guess Brock is good enough to keep us happy at the position.
C Rondell Kramer looks like a very good pursuit… he’s not asking for much, and he looks very good. I think that might make a load of sense – three years at a little more than minsal is a great value there (as is often the case at canter).
- - -
Rookie Draft
Anyone think we have any shot to get DE Jake Givens? He’s not the prototype “topped-out” DE who usually goes at the very top of the draft. Wow, that would be great to see him fall to pick #23, where we sit. I’d put DT Percy Dawson and Clifton Ramsey into the same basket, though they seem closer to the type that goes pretty early.
- - -
Our numbers situation is like this:
We have 36 players signed, and eventually need to get up to 53. Remember, on top of 53, the other players we take into training camp are most likely to be URFAs, guys who don’t effectively count against the salary cap. So, let’s think in terms of 17 players to sign.
We have $28.25 million in cap room right now – so that’s the total amount we have to work with. We have seven draft picks (including our extra second rounder), which are slated to cost us $8.16 million. So that effectively leaves us $20 million for 10 players.
So, the question becomes – how much do we really have to spend? My thinking is that we can fill up the “other” spots for an average of about $1 million each, so we can go up to 20-X million to sign X serious free agent players. If we want to sign two serious players, then we have something like $18m to sign them.
G Calvin Gaines is up for a new deal, and is asking for $2 million. MLB Russell Von Hagel must be offered a deal for $3.3 this year – and I suspect he’ll end up with us whether we like it or not. C Isaac Terry is looking for a serious deal – and he is an excellent player, to be sure. We might even be tempted to look at LT Lenny Bradley for under $2 million.

Just to emphasize - we're probably stuck with LB Von Hagel, as he is a fan favorite. Therefore, we must offer him his basica request, and my guess is he'll take it. Just figure that in... grumble, grumble.

We also, by my recknoing, have several players in the last year of their contracts. If we spend all our cap space this year, we might find ourselves without options next year - meaning we couldn't re-sign some of the guys we might want to. That said, there are a few "deadweight" contracts that will be expiring after this season, too - I have yet to do any calculations of either one, it's just an impression.

02-27-2003, 04:10 PM
Oh damn I didn't even notice Von Hagel was a fan favorite. I knew I never wanted to sign that guy. ;)
Well if we get stuck with him I guess that's ok although I really hope someone comes inand outbids us. Berry is a cheaper and better option.
I think we got the best use out of Rome last season. While he was only in on 197 pass plays remember he only played 12 games and had 3 other games where he came out early because of injury. He wasn't completely healthy for most of the year.
With that being said I think Gabe Blow is producing at about the same level as Rome and can atleast play the run a little better than Rome can so I have no problem cutting Rome losse. Especially if it means we can pursue a guy like Foley. For that matter if we need the space to land Foley we can probably cut them both and then use Russell Austin as the primary backup. He showed some promise in camp last year.
As for Wilkerson we can definately look at getting him a little more time on the field. I had the nickel coverage bumped up ecause we had three pretty solid corners, but we can play some more 4-3 in passing situations which would leave Wilkerson on the field a little longer.

Instead of just cutting them, shouldn't we consider trading them? Rome and Blow are both pretty good players and I would expect we could get atleast a 3rd for each....

I guess we can do that, but if you are looking to dump salary those draft picks coming back will eat into that some and I guess I lean away from trading a ton of players because you just don't see it that often in real life.

Our rule with offering trades - isn't it something like we get to make one offer to one team, then it's make the deal (if they accept) or else cut the player. Does that sound right?
I think we have a few candidates for that treatment.

Yea I believe the rule is we can only offer the player to the team highest on the shopping list and if they don't accept that offer we cut them.
I'd like to pick up FA C Rondell Kramer instead of giving Isaac Terry the kind of money he's asking for, but if we have the money for Terry we could end up with both of them and I'd be happy. :D
Both of our starting guards are willing to come back for reasonable offers. Andre Penick could move into the starting position at LG for Gaines if necessary. We really need some youth at the guard position, perhaps we can pick someone up in the draft, although I'm not overly impressed with any of the guards other than Ray Flowers in this year's draft.
I think Cunningham should do fine at RT. At LT, I wouldn't mind keeping Lenny Bradley if we have the extra money to back up at both tackle spots. The nice thing is he's not asking for a signing bonus so he could be cut later if necessary.
There are some really nice looking D-linemen in the draft this year, especially at DT. I don't know if any will fall to us or if they will get sucked up early.
BigDPW
02-27-2003, 06:19 PM
Maybe after the huge run on D-lineman early in the draft last year people will be looking for them early on this year??? I certainly hope so... I think we should consider trading up to late first early 2nd round to get 2 early picks if that is the case??? We need some solid youth on our Dline... As well as at guard...
I think our priorities for early picks in the draft should be...
DT
G
RT (if top flight available)
LDE (assuming we don't get a big FA)
LB (If their is a top flight one available - we are solid here but could use some great talent just to top it off)
CB (a pick to add depth)
I agree on letting C Issac go as good as he looks we have other options...???
QuikSand
02-27-2003, 06:29 PM
I wonder if we could sign C Kramer and switch him to another OL position. If he could make a fairly painless switch to G, for instance, we could have twin towers for our interior line if we also re-signed our young center. Hmmmm...
(Or, perhaps, we could switch the position of our emerging C to guard, and sign the free agent juyst to play C - amounts to the same thing)
Interesting thought about switching one of the centers. I say we try to sign them both and then consider our options. Doesn't it give you a estimate of reduction to experience and overall skill when you switch positions? We could see which one would have the least change at that point and make the call then. I have a feeling it might be easier to switch Isaac Terry since he's younger, but I'm far from an expert on switching positions.

For me it is most definately a time thing.. during the week basically i can check early in the mornings before work.. and then sometimes in the evenings.. and that's IT... so, I have to get as much out at once as I can ;).. I look at it as more like a real OC, i'm more involved in the game plan than the personel..
Current Players:
Without a doubt, I think we resign K Rod Covington. We should probably pursue P Metz also, as he has performed well for us - although I'm a little concerned with how his salary inflates at the end..
C Isaac Terry - It's unfortunate that his breakout season is going to hurt us in the end. I would love to keep him, as he was a rock on our team this year, but I can understand if we don't have the money for him. The chance to pursue him and the FA would be wonderful.
LG Calvin Gaines - A former Pro-Bowler for us, Gaines is solid but geting old. I think a younger option here would be wise, but perhaps keeping Gaines around for the one year deal he wants until we find a replacement would help.
RG Shaun Meekin - I don't think we can justify the cost for this guy.
Looking ahead, we seem to have shot ourselves in the foot a bit.. all FOUR of our QBs get to the end of their contract next year. Unless we have a sudden change at QB, we'll have to offer to Pritchett because he is idolized, but we may be outbid at that time. Oddly enough, somehow Barker is a Fan Favorite too. This rule could really end up being a costly rule for us, I like it ;) Urmm.. this is where it is a problem for me.. Monty Houston is ALSO a fan favorite, and he hasn't taken a snap in 2 years.. Eithe way, the money that could be shelled out at QB next year is something we need to consider strongly.. and perhaps now is the time we finally pull the trigger on trading Houston, before his salary inflates? Keith Baker and RT Johnston are also big leavers next year, so we need to consider their positions in the draft this year..
Draft Priorities:
OL (G/C/T depending on what we resign)
QB
RB
I think this offseason our skill positions are set, with the exception of maybe bringing in another young QB since we are not going to be able to resign all of our guys next year.. OL is really where we need to put any energy on the offense. We are aging desperately except at LT and C if we retain Terry. I like the options presented so far in FA, and here are some draft options..
RG Ray Flowers - Like Bee, I really like this guy. But, I doubt he will fall to us.
C Donovan Jarvis - Centers usually don't go early. If this guy was available, we could probably do without our young C.. However, even if he is available in the first round, it seems that D-Line is a higher priority.
RT Ethan Lewis - A lot of green, but the endurance has a lot of red and seems to show solid potential. Lewis would be a great counterpart to Wooldridge.
I'm really unimpressed below this.. it is slim pickings this year..
I think this is the year that we are going to begin to really see the affects of our house rules... look at the planning we already have to do for Van Hogel, etc... this is where the real challenge begins..
QuikSand
02-28-2003, 08:01 AM
Hmmmm... we have a house rule saying we have to make an effort to keep our fan favorites. To me, the spirit of that rule (even if not the letter) suggests that slipping them away by trades or cuts would be off limits as well, don't you think?
We dug this hole for ourselves...
At one point I suggested a house rule that said we could trade away fan favorites, but not idolized players. Perhaps that would be a good one to add?
If not, perhaps a rule that said we can't trade either, unless there is a more popular player at the same position under contract?
primelord
02-28-2003, 08:30 AM
I agree there isn't much point in having the fan favorite rule if we are just going to get around it by trading them. Especially considering our trade rule says if we try to trade them and they don't accept we have to cut them.
So we should not try to trade any of our fan favorites.
QuikSand

I'll be unavailable practically all day... so if there is an emerging consensus on what to do, go ahead without me. Otherwise, I'll try to crystallize and go ahead either tonight or tomorrow, based on everyone's input.
Coordinators - I'm looking to you in particular, as you guys have the best perspective on relative priorities.
Everyone likes the stud FB in free agency... is this guy a real priority, though? What of the promising guy we just drafted, who is much cheaper?
Are we thinking that we might go after a DE with a big money FA contract, and then hope to get a DT with our first draft pick? If so, and we're planning to commit $10m/yr or more to a DE, then let's throw out a few guys to cut/trade to help make room.

Defensive Overview:
We currently have 16 bodies under contract on the defense which is broken down as follows.
LDE: 2
LDT: 1
RDT: 1
RDE: 2
SLB: 1
MLB: 1
WLB: 2
LCB: 1
RCB: 1
SS: 3
FS: 1
So in terms of bodies we need a couple of guys at corner, atleast 1 LB, and a DT. We have two good starting corners so we don't need to pursue any big ticket guys in FA at the CB position. I would like to have a solid nickel back, but maybe we can find a steal in the draft somewhere.
I feel comfortable with all of our starters at LB and since we have to make an offer to Von Hagel we probably are ok at the LB position although another body couldn't hurt.
The defensive line is where I would like to see us make the biggest upgrade. I want to do exactly what you said Quik. Throw some big money at a DE in free agency (Foley) and try and grab a DT in the 1st round of the draft. I am fine with releasing/trading Rome and/or Blow in order to make cap room for a big time DE. Although I would prefer to keep atleast one of them for depth. Rome would give us the biggest cap savings, but alos would create some dead cap space for next season. Blow is in the final year of his contract anyway, btu would only save us 1.6 million by releasing him.
Outside of those two I don't see a lot of flexability in terms of gusy we can release friom the defense. We could maybe release one of our safeties, but I like the dpeth we have at that position.

02-28-2003, 05:28 PM
I personally like the FB is so totally a non-need for us.. Brock served very well for what we needed this year, and as you said he is much cheaper.. I feel like the pick could be used much better elsewhere..
As I stated, if we do anything with the offense, i think the line is our top priority. We seem good at WR, TE, QB, and RB and anyone we pick up would be for the future -- seeing guys that we may not be able to afford to keep leave.
As for the fan favorite thing... should we reexamine and apply the rules to idolized instead? I never realized your 3rd string QB could be a fan favorite just because he was a fan favorite 3 years prior on his old team..

I like the suggestion that we need to keep the "fan faves" only if there aren't other such guys ahead of them on the depth chart, at the same position. With our QB situation, that would seem to make more sense to me.

Does that mean we also don't have to tender an offer to VOn Hagel? Lonnie Bell is also a fan favorite.

Von Hagel has a higher popularity rating than Lonnie Bell. My suggestion would be to only allow trades if there is someone with a higher popularity at the same position (so if both were under contract, we could trade Bell but not Von Hagel).
Also, just my opinion again, but I think we should still make offers to *all* fan favorites who are free agents from our team (like Von Hagel). That forces us to look ahead and think about future moves and future salary cap issues.
We might even want to add a special rule for fan favorites that if we make a trade offer and it's rejected, instead of having to cut them, we have to keep them on the team for the rest of that season.
Just some random thoughts.

So, the whole thing really pivots on DE Foley, as I see it. If we get him, we accomplish our goals. If not, we basically go without a major FA improvement this year (except for C Kramer, who admittedly seems pretty good)
After week one, we have competition for DE Percy Foley – we’re among six teams competing for his services. I’m hoping that the option year we offered, along with a pretty healthy bonus, will help us… but we are not the top dollar offer. Thatsi Wheeling, offering him $47m over the same 4 year deal. But we’re right in the hunt. (Damn – just a couple million more and we would probably be in the clear)
C Calvin Gaines has accepted our new deal – so he almost certainly will finish out his career with us. It didn’t seem like an expensive gesture to offer him a fair bonus to do so.
After three weeks, DE Foley has a few more offers… and we are still near but not at the top of the list. We’re on our way, it seems, to signing everyone else we pursued. LB Jeremy Kolb signed with us, and he was the only guy being pursued by anyone else. C Rondell Kramer has not been pursued by anyone, but has yet to take our deal (fingers crossed).
As of week 6, I now think that we’d bust our cap if we actually signed DE Percy Foley. I don’t want to make anticipatory cuts, but I will let other guys go if that’s where we end up. He’s still pending to Wheeling, though.
It’s week nine… and Percy Foley is still the crown jewel of the free agency process, and is still playing hard-to-get.
At this point, Percy Foley suddenly drops from the FA list. I am guessing that he busted someone’s cap, and like in FOF 2001 that inadvertently voids out all offers to him. I don’t know if it was our offer that did so (but I hope it was – that means he was willing to take our deal). Regardless, I read the spirit of our rules to allw me to reinstate the same offer we had on the table before, but now that requires clearing some cap room.
We swing a deal with Sacramento, to get their 3(3) pick for our 7th rounder and QB Monty Houston. Since we have so many “favorites” at QB, this seems fair – Houston is not slated for much playing time anyway.
I also release QB Danny Rhodes, who generates no interest in the trade market. I release C Claude McCough, who doesn’t seem to be progressing at all, and now sits as our #3 center, even before we consider what to do with our still unsigned young stud Isaac Terry.
Finally, I offer up S Stanley Newton to Cheyenne, who takes him and our 3(23) pick in exchange for their 2(13) pick- giving us five picks in the first 67 draft slots. Newton is a pretty good player on paper, but only saw about 100 plays for us last year – we’re just too deep at safety.
And by my calculations, that gives us just enough cap room to afford the proposed deal with Foley. So we should still be in play there.
In week 12, DE Percy Foley has agreed to our terms, and comes aboard as a new Little Rock Roller. He’ll make over $11m for each of the next three years, with an option on a fourth season at the same rate. It’s a big deal, but as noted several times already, he has been very productive – with ten straight seasons of double-digit sacks. He is, by a sizable margin, the league’s all-time sack leader – and should be just what we’re looking for on our defensive line.

So, we skip the remaining stages of the FA process, and move ourselves into position for the rookie draft. We’ve already had some speculation about where we’d like to go – I sense DT as potentially our top priority.
Since we have a number of extra picks here, I also think it’s conceivable that we actually try to move up here. If the DT crop gets thin, I think we might consider offering up one of our extra second rounders to try to advance a few spots in the first round, in order to lock up the DT that we want.
At DT, here’s my personal ranking:
Richie Douglass
Clifton Ramsey
Percy Dawson
Mitch Hughes
I think these four are worth our top pick – after that, I think we look elsewhere. I’ll run the draft a while, with a particular eye on this position. If two or three guys go, I’ll stop the show and see what we want to do.
1. Athens - Douglass, Richie, DT, Tennessee
2. Tijuana - Rainer, Jay, T, Oklahoma
3. Sacramento - Hughes, Mitch, DT, Air Force
4. Bermuda - Clinton, Tyrus, T, Ark. - Pine Bluff
5. Providence - Givens, Jake, DE, Arizona
6. Fort Wayne - Flowers, Ray, G, Colorado
7. Louisville - Davidson, Emmanuel, RB, Arizona State
8. Niagara Falls - Hodges, Corwin, QB, New Mexico
9. Ocean City - McCormick, Irving, DE, Rutgers
10. Tulsa - Harden, Bo, T, Vanderbilt
11. Sault Ste. Marie - Harrison, Neal, RB, Virginia
12. Memphis - Lewis, Ethan, T, Louisiana Tech
13. Cheyenne - Dawson, Percy, DT, North Carolina
Well, that certainly didn’t take too long. I’ll leave it here, and let us consider what to do now. DT Clifton Ramsey sits atop my list of best players available, in addition to being at a need position.
I have talked to Kitty Hawk – they would want our pick at 3(3) in order to move down from #14 to #23 overall. I support making this move… but I will defer to the will of the participants.
Other best prospects out there include:
LB Pat Banks
LB Deron Benjdya
CB Alex Malbrough
QB Quinn Morton?
QB Otis Coghill (I really like this guy – future star, I’m convinced)
C Donovan Jarvis
…and others, I’m sure.
Thoughts from here?
Any chance that Coghill falls to 23?
If you think so, maybe we can make a trade with Kitty Hawk that doesn't include that pick and get both the DT and Coghill (whom I like a lot!). Not sure if it would be possible to make a trade to get the DT without giving up our #23 pick, but just a thought. I'd rather get two potential stars than 4 or 5 more young solid players considering the depth of our roster right now.

I like Bee's idea but we would have to take a chance to do it... I like the idea of picking up two DTs but Coghill looks to be a good catch also... Nice job clearing cap space and landing Foley... I think he will be worth the 11M/yr...

Well it looks like a pretty sigfinicant drop off at DT after Ramsey. My very biased opinion is that we should pull the trigger on the deal to move up and take him at this pick.
I'd be surprised if Kitty Hawk would be willing to trade down without getting a 1st round pick back, but if we can I agree with Bee it might be nicer to land two stars at the expense of al the picks we have.

The problem with trading up and keeping #23 is the fact that we have to take a gamble before-hand. What if we give up 3 or 4 picks, then the QB isn't there at 23?

If he's not there and we don't see anyone else we think is a legitimate star, we could always trade down and try to get a couple picks back. It is a gamble though.

Okay, we swing a deal to move up to #14, and we take the last outstanding defensive tackle. I like this move an awful lot. (Note to team – DT Ramsey is already “idolized” so he’s probably with us for the long haul)
From here, we will bide our time, and hope to see QB Coghill slip a ways. If he does, we might go ahead and make a deal to move up and get him. We still hold three second round picks – I’d be perfectly happy to use two of them to get Coghill.
My hope is that we can watch QB Quinn Morton go off the board ahead of Coghill, and then we can decide whether to try to move up for Coghill.
14. Little Rock - Ramsey, Clifton, DT, Washington State
15. Thunder Bay - Etaton, Ronnie, S, Texas - El Paso
16. Pensacola - Thorp, Donnie, DE, Temple
17. Manhattan - Flynn, Neil, T, Michigan State
18. Texarkana - Woodard, Lonnie, DE, Pittsburgh
19. Lake Erie - Bickford, Brant, S, South Carolina St.
20. Key West - Morton, Quinn, QB, Georgia Tech
At this point, we basically know that the next team who wants to take a QB will select our guy. So, now would be the safest time to make a deal.
Death Valley is willing to listen to our offer, and we end up engineering a complex trade:
Death Valley gets: Little Rocks 2nd(7), 2nd(23) and 6th round picks
Little Rock gets: Death Valley’s 1st(21) and 5th round picks
But the point is, for us, that we get our guy.
21. Little Rock - Coghill, Otis, QB, Nicholls State
22. Hawk Mountain - Kelley, Wally, DE, Georgia Tech
23. Kitty Hawk - Sipe, Phillip, T, Army
24. Norfolk - Curtis, Dwight, T, Miami, Florida
25. Ypsilanti - Malbrough, Alex, CB, UAB
26. Puget Sound - Towne, Bennie, RB, Texas Tech
27. Mazatlan - Campos, Lamar, G, Kentucky
28. Wheeling - Gardner, Austin, RB, Harding
29. Nashua - Parker, Bo, QB, Western Illinois
30. Napa Valley - Ackerman, Deion, T, Missouri
31. Champaign - May, Roderick, OLB, Miami, Florida
32. Fort Knox - Levels, Victor, QB, Georgia Tech
33. Athens - Jarvis, Donovan, C, Dartmouth
34. Tijuana - Jamison, Herman, DT, Kansas
35. Kitty Hawk - Whitfield, Winston, T, Findlay
36. Bermuda - Kane, Rex, ILB, Wake Forest
37. Providence - McIntyre, Patrick, G, Hawaii
38. Fort Wayne - Banks, Pat, ILB, Bethune Cookman
39. Death Valley - Rowell, Ronnie, QB, Brigham Young
40. Niagara Falls - Lorey, Nicky, T, Kansas State
41. Ocean City - Van Pelt, Maurice, RB, Marist
42. Tulsa - Godfrey, Willie, RB, Austin
43. Sault Ste. Marie - Shifflett, Will, DE, Miami, Florida
44. Memphis - Lyon, Alonzo, CB, Northern Illinois
So, at this point we are again on the clock, in the middle of round two. After this, we have selections in rounds 4 and 5, but that’s all.
I’ll post the file updates so we can catch up and discuss… but I really like the two guys we have in hand, so I’m ready to declare this draft a success no matter how it unfolds from here.

Bee, have a look at T Ben WInslett. He looks like he might be the best of the OL left... a decent but perhaps not inspiring second round selection. Slightly run-inclined, but pretty little downside.
If we think OT is a higher priority than LB, we could go with this guy.
By the way, speaking of LB - the guy we signed as a free agent won't switch from WILB to any position but DE... what do we have to do under our rules? I think I recall our rules still allowing him to be a backup - just not a starter out of position. If so, fine. If not, we need to either switch to DE or cut him.

And if we are contemplating releasing one or both of our current "expensive" players at DE, perhaps we'd look at LDE Wesley Bauer here. He might be the best value on the board - looks like first-round talent to me, at least as a pass rusher.
However, the safest play might be to go with a linebacker, a more pressing need on our current roster (I think).

I see practically nothing in this draft at CB worth having... maybe we want to select a safety, with intentions of moving him to corner? Anyone have a sense of an ideal weight to do so?
I think there are going to be guys currently listed at safety as URFAs who will make better CBs after switching positions than the CBs we could take in the middle rounds of this draft.

I'm out for a while... if people get itchy, feel free to go on in the draft without me. I've had my say already, it seems.
(We're looking pretty strong at QB, by the way - did anyone else see John Barker's jump from last season to this season?)

I'm having problems with the files too..
Sorry I haven't been around, busy day and all..
I'm VERY happy with the draft this far.. I think we have good depth, so a few studs rather than 5 or 6 guys is better for us.. I like the looks of Coghill, giving us another logjam at QB... Do you think Coghill should threaten to start, or do you like him better as atleast a year or two long backup first?
I like Winslett, but we'd want to move him to RT -- which I assume would not be a big dropoff... and isn't LB one of our strongest positions?

I like Winslett, but I'm not sure he's worth a pick this high. With Cunningham and Wooldridge as young tackles, I don't know if it's a real need position. He might end up being just a backup for his entire career. I think his development would probably be slowed quite a bit as well behind 2 other young guys.
As far as switching, I was in favor or forcing switches between the 3-4 and 4-3 (WILB/SILB to MLB and NT to LDT/RDT) even for backups but I don't think a call was ever made if that would be a rule or not. I think we should have to switch him or cut him since there's not a WILB position in our defense. Backing up out of position is one thing, but having a guy who doesn't even play the same defense we are using is another IMO. But whatever way you guys want to go with that is fine with me.
Edit: I'm having problems with the files as well.

I checked our house rules, and here is what they say about "playing in position."
House Rules:
3. Players can not start out of position at the beginning of the season.
To me, this says that Kolb can stay at WILB, and can start the year slotted as a reserve at any eligible position, including any LB slot or any DL spot where he is eligible. If someone else gets hurt as the year goes on, he could be moved into the starting spot.
Maybe this isn't as tough as we want the rule to be, but that seems to be what it currently says.

I like Rob Battle (CB)... Not sure if he is a real "need" pick or not but he is good at Zone and look like he could breakout with all of those "0" ratings... Probably would be quality at this point in the draft...
The only thing that scares me about him is that he went to TEMPLE.... LOL :D

In the back of my mind, I have been thinking that after the draft?URFSa, we might want to do some more paring down to try to get enough ca space to re-sign our current center. That means $3-4 million this year, I'm sure - so we'd have to do some work. If there are guys we can draft here late who can make such cuts more livable, that might be a sensible plave to be looking.
I'm thinking that if we draft the return man CB Rob Battle, then we might cut our return man WR who is costing us some $2m this year. That's a monetary way to look at the draft... but it might make sense.

We can also cut LDE Cris Lowe. That will free up another million dollars.
It's hard to really tell who is left in the draft since so many names have gone off the board in between updates. But looking at the guys you listed Quik I think taking the return man Battle makes a lot of sense at this pick. Plus if he doesn't bust he has solid zone coverage skills and might not turn out to be a bad 3rd or 4th CB.

And just to keep the ball rolling, we have progressed ahead with building the 60-man camp roster. After the draft, we have 48 guys signed and ready to go. But our goal here is to free up cap room for C Isaac Terry, and that will require almost $4m this year. Since our cap space currently sits at about $1.2m – we have work to do if we are to reach that goal.
As it turns out, we need to do some cap clearing just to be able to carry our 60 players into camp. This is going to be painful – but we did sign a number of “no risk” free agents this year to bonus-free contracts, so that’s where I’ll start.
We release FB Nathan Conley, WR Jake Donovan, DE Cris Lowe, and DT Christian Howe. That gets our cap space up into the right neighborhood, at least.
We re-sign P Damon Metz to a two year deal, as he requested. Not as much growth as originally sought, but he’ll do okay.
Now, we fill in with a tentative list of undrafted rookie free agents. We still have an open roster spot at CB, and will bring in a couple candidates for that role.
I’m distributing the files with the job partially done, but not yet there. We have 55 players on board, and about $1.5m under the cap. We might have to make one more veteran cut to fill up the roster. At this point, without a major release or trade, I think it’s impossible to see us signing C Isaac Terry – just no way.
I’ll send out the files, and let us work through these last stages… and get to our training camp.

Doug Rome can be cut to create cap space. I am comfortable with Austin and Blow coming off the bench and Rome is disgruntled anyway. The question is do we want to try and trade him or just cut him?

I was trying to point this out earlier.. this is where I was saying that our house rules will really start to have an effect... It's always esier in the first few years to me because you can really just go out and sign whoever the hell you want, but then you get used to those players -- especially when you have to keep some, it gets a lot harder to manage..

Unfortunately, it looks like you're right -- no way to get Terry back. I hate to let such a young star go, but that's the way it happens sometimes..
Possible URFA pickups:
RB Tracy Sullivan -- Not much of a pass receiver, but could do some nice backup running work.
FL Vinny Parker -- We only have on true Flanker on our team at this point..
QB Jesse Dresselhaus -- Would be nice to have 4 QBs on the roster, and his timing seems to suggest that he he may be for real in his green numbers..
Seems like not a whole lot beyond that on offense..

As a rule, I suggest watching the "avoid rush" and "scramble frequency" for this indicator. I had, at one time suggested using the "timing" rating, but I've since reversed myself. FYI

If we cut Doug Rome. MLB Pete Greer could be anotehr candidate to be brought in and changed to RDE as a pass rush specialist.
Other guys I have mild interest in.
RCB Carlton Evans
RCB Rondell McWhorter
RCB Tony Kandel
SS Jeffrey Colon
FS Johnny Pearl (Might make an excellent Dime Back. He has no run stopping ability but some very solid cover skills)
SS Ernest Dillon (An even better cover guy that Pearl, but not as good at intercepting passes.)
I think the idea of signing Pearl or Dillon is very intriguing. If you figure they would onyl be used in a dime package they don't really need to eb able to stop the run and they both have excellent zone coverage ability.

In the interest of keeping things moving. I have cut RDE Doug Rome and signed the following URFA.
QB Jesse Desselhaus
RB Tracy Sullivan
FL Vinny Parker
MLB Pete Greer (moved to RDE)
SS Ernets Dillon
FS Johnny Pearl
And that gets us to 60.
Now we have 3.6 million available under the cap and Isaac Terry is asking for 3.8 for this season. If we cut one of our other centers (Kramer or Hauck) we would have enough to sign Terry.
Are we interested in doing that?

I think signing Terry and cutting Hauck makes plenty of sense for right now. And considering our team's recent success, we owe it to the fans to be thinking short-term. I say go for it... nice job.

Ok we cut Hauck, sign Terry to a new long term contract. And head into the season. Here are the updated files.

Wade,
I will post my preseason depth charts tonight and then you can run pre season in the morning if you want. Or if you don't have time post your changes and I will run them.
Defensive Coaches,
Where have you gone? :) I'd be happy to hear your input.

Where has everyone but Bee gone? :).. Bee and all, any suggestions differently than what we've done in the past?

We have an embarrasment of riches right now at the QB position, and I'd say Pritchett is still the starter until either Coghill or Barker can unseat him with their play.
QuikSand

I agree, Pritchett probably is the starter by default. However, he comes off a shaky season. I think we give the youngster a shot in preseason, and then plan to make him our #2 for the year.

Wade,
Here are the files with my changes made. I set the depth charts on the defense and moved some defensive players to the inactive list. The vast majority of our defensive starters are in the inactive list for the pre season.
I have a few game plan tweaks I want to make, but I will do those tommorrow after the pre season.

Ummm... you seem to have pulled a wade? These are last modified at 3:54 PM and there are no defensive changes.. so, I'll post my stuff and then you can run the preseason today ;)
I released SE Colin Carson .. we can Cut RB Tracy Sullivan and LT Marlon Douglas if need be.. I've noticed we've got about 6 more players on Defense right now, so I think the cuts need to come mostly from there.. I have made my starters, etc. who are resting inactive.. If you want to do the regular season before I get home, You just have to make sure you make active and put in starting roles: McAlister, The Ox, and Pritchett.

Here is a glance out how the defensive line played.
Name Sack PsBlk Hurr PassPly PrPct
Greer 1 3 2 101 5.9
Blow 3 0 3 106 5.7
Ramsey 2.5 0 4 119 5.5

I think Greer and Blow will give us very solid depth on the outside this year. And Ramsey earned himself a starting spot as a rookie. Add Foley, Davison, and Wolfe to this group and we may have the best DLine in the league.

Wade,
I have made the defensive cuts and inactivations and adjusted my depth charts and game plans. You shouldn't have to make any cuts to the offense. The people I cut from the defense got us down to 53.

Time for a new page.
Not a bad preseason for Coghill... I have yet to check out his post-camp ratings, but I'm still pretty optimistic.
We definitely need to have our running game working to make this go correctly.
On the OL... did we change anyone's position? Or do we stil have two star-caliber centers, with one sitting on the bench? I'm thinking that's something we ought to rectify... perhaps move Isaac Terry to play guard - he'll take a bit of a hit I'm sure, but at least he can start that way.
I think we need to move Terry to RG. We'll need to move Newman (or another lineman) to C to have 2 active centers though.

I'll start up the new thread when I actually sim the regular season games.. I'll make the move for Terry, that is something I can still do now, isn't it?
As for Coghill -- yes, very nice.. I still don't think we have a QB Controversy on our hands, but it puts into real question whether we even consider resigning Pritchett next year for how much money he is going to ask for.. I'm going to bump the passing to a little longer (i bumped it back down a bunch after last years performance) but beyond that I think the preseason looked good, especially when you consider that the Ox rested the entire time.. I'll sim tonigth or tomorrow morning..
We have to offer Pritchett a contract because of fan popularity (I believe he's the most popular QB on the team).

I move Terry to RG... he retains 82 percent of his ability..
I sign C Carlos McCleon as we have to carry 2 C's on our roster.. I then release LT Douglas Marlon to keep our roster at 53..
