also, to get some talking going, what is your favorite series you've run in. I'm currently trying my luck as a single team driver in a V8 Supercars series and let me tell you, it's quite a challenge. We've done the two Adelaide races and we'll start having events with 3 races bundled together. The second one will always be a reverse grid start where you take the finishing position of the first race and reverse that order to give out starting position. Gonna cause some interesting interaction...

you can stop hating me, you transfered your hatred to my car today. Had 4 bad events in a race where I was trying to come from the back line. Had a bad start, 2 driver errors, and an engine problem that left me limping back home, bleh. Maybe I overdid it on the driving strategy sliders trying to gain all those positions back...
In my V8 series, I also had some mechanical problems and again limped back home, but it was very important that I did so. It was the first race of a three race weekend. The second race is that reverse grid I mentionned, however, only cars who finished the first race get to have their starting position reversed from their finishing position in the previous race, all the non finishers start from the back of the grid. Because of that, I will start 2nd tomorrow, in front of many much faster car. Should be fun... :D

So, anyone have any tips on driver settings? I've got some feel for the rest of the game but driver settings are darts on the wall at this point.
It's still pretty much the darts thing for me too. I'm experimenting a lot. Depending on if my car is a dependable one or not, I might lower the mechanical sympathy slider. I've found that going above 80 on about any slider is sometimes a risky business.
The tyre use slider goes without saying I'd say. I base it on what my engineer says my tires will last. If he say they might last half the race and I plan only one stop, I'll lower it way down. But if he says half the race and I plan on two stops, then I'll push it to above 70, since the tires now only have to last a third of the race each.
I guess we're all pretty much trying stuff at this point...
FM

I'm getting a little more feel for the sliders. Pace and aggression seem okay set high (70-ish). Mech sympathy is very touchy, I've been setting that down to 35 and have had some clean races now. Even at 50 it was problematic.
I learned to crank the wet tire use, since they don't wear down much at all. Obvious but I missed it the first time.
Pit stops are also pretty touchy. I had problems at 60, have tried 55 which seems better. There also seems to be a trend for lower mechanic settings, but I haven't had issues leaving it at 50.
Dunno about the start.

You can find them by going under "Results", "Car Comparion" in a series. Some series don't have them, like ChampCar or A1GP (where all cars are exactly the same), but it helps when you have one, at least you know what you are getting into.
Looking at that, you can also appreciate why SirFozzie and me are happy being competitive even just a little bit while driving the Super Aguri team...

What the heck does charismatic do? Keep your teammate from being a tool?? :)
here are all the traits...
Mechanical Sympathy. You are able to gently stroke and convince your car home to the finish line.
Wet Weather Warrior. In wet conditions you really shine, able to put in a fast lap and attack the competition regardless.
Pole Sitter King. One off fast laps are your speciality - enjoy a healthy bonus during your fight for pole and find speed when you need it most in a race.
Speed Demon. You don't shine in one particular area: but instead are generally fast be it dry, wet or going for pole.
Consistent. Being able to setup a good rhythm allows you to stay within your limits: and on the track.
Super Fit. Taking personal fitness to the extreme gives you great stamina throughout the duration of an entire race.
Concentration. When out on the circuit on your own you can turn in a steady state of speed without the visible benchmark of another car.
Lucky. More often than not, you always seem to avoid the worst share of luck in your team.
Committed. You have full belief in yourself, your car and your team - and this shows in your ultimate results.
Cool. In the thick of the action you are at your best, being able to overtake and pull off difficult manouveres.
Aggressive. Battling for position your opponents should beware - you won't think twice about letting them know who is boss.
Control Freak. As the lights turn green your opponents can't see you for dust as you perfectly judge clutch, throttle and available traction.
Wisdom. Experience from countless competitive events makes you a formidable foe to your rivals.
Spatial Awareness. You are able to judge your car perfectly allowing for every inch of the track to be used, and every overtaking opportunity to be exploited.
Bender. Bending the rules is your game - if there is a loop hole you can and will exploit it!
Thinker. Correctly analysing your car and it's setup is a great strength to have.
Charisma. People love you and just want to help out: you always get the most attention from your team.
I'm guessing it means faster pitstops as your crew will like to work for you...

Watching races lap by lap is great, I love the suspense.
One of the things I really like about this game overall is that unless you are really stupid and push all the sliders all the way up, the learning curve isn't too steep that you have to go through a few seasons of complete suckage before you achieve something nice.

My only concern with the game is: 2 days=1 race? That's about a month for a season. Wouldn't be better to make things a little quicker? I mean, you qualify, you obviously did your setup, you're good to go. Anyway, good time-waster.

also, to get some talking going, what is your favorite series you've run in.
I like V8s a lot -- relatively similar cars means that there's no issues of cherry-picking, reverse grid races give everyone a shot at a result. The point structure makes the strategy there different than in some other carsets.
LMES is an interesting change from the other series, but my experience in LMP1 and LMP2 is that there doesn't tend to be a lot of action in the races.
7s are fun for the live qualifying.

It's great to have a thinker for a teammate.
When you're the one with it, you have the opportunity cost of foregoing a speed- or reliability-related characteristic. I'd still consider taking it in F1 (particularly if I don't know about trusting my teammate), and strongly consider it in LMES (where I think you can get away with only using two drivers in every race).
Mr. Wednesday

So, anyone have any tips on driver settings?
I think you'll find that you need to run at least in the 70-80 range on the pace slider to be competitive in most public series. I move this around depending on how I feel about my pace relative to the pack, as well as my position in the field -- starting from the back in an A1 feature race, say, where only the top 10 places pay and there's no additional consequences for crashing out, I'm going to go at a high pace to try to sneak back into the points.
I typically run with medium-high aggression, say around 65 or so. I've never really figured what the trade-off on that setting is... at higher aggression, do I get more passes and blocks but with greater risk of collision?
Tyres depends on how much I expect them to wear. Hards in F1, I run at 100. Many V8 races, I'll run 80 to 90. Softs in champ car, I run around 65. Only time I've run below 50 is one or two of the LMES races, where on certain tyre manufacturers you won't make it through the race at 50 (you'll know by the engineer saying 20% of the race when you only have three stops).
Mechanical sympathy I usually run quite low, say 15 to 20.
Pit settings, I vary a bit depending on the circumstances, and I always run with a higher driver setting than pit crew because a driver error costs a LOT less than a crew error.
Start slider, I swing depending on where I qualified. As with pace, if you start at the back of the field, there's not much to lose trying for a hole shot.

My only concern with the game is: 2 days=1 race? That's about a month for a season.
It's the standard. Means everyone only has to have time once a day in order to keep up minimally, although it's better when you can get on a couple of times so that you can also apply whatever your teammate found.
V8s are usually four days for three races, but with the long calendar, it still takes 45 days to get through them.

Multi-dola, a couple more general things:
* Per Jules, control freak means that you can run at 100 start slider and have no incidents IIRC, per Jules, committed is a plus-speed characteristic that is worth a couple tenths per lap.
* For most of the settings on the car, the engineer's advice tells you where the average will lie (or the setting itself if there's not front and rear). Low, soft, and short are 0 to 33, medium is 33 to 67, high, hard, and stiff is 66 to 100. You can use this knowledge to your advantage when testing, it can help you reduce the possible range of values for a setting. e.g. if something is medium, one is spot on at 38, the other won't be below 30.
* For the special settings, the full wet adjustment is typically -10. That includes wheel stagger in CART, rollcenter in V8s, and splitter in LMES.

Anyone know whether the driver settings are relative or absolute?
I.e., do I need to crank the settings down for a tough venue such as Monaco?
Mr. Wednesday
07-11-2007, 04:45 PM
I don't know if you're more likely to make an error at a "difficult" venue. I don't think, offhand, I've been struck by abnormally high retirement rates at Monaco, though... take that for what it's worth.
I usually do dial my settings back a bit at Michigan in the Champcar series, as that really does tend to have high retirement rates -- possibly due to the length of the race (25% longer than the other ovals) rather than the venue.

I have them. They are handy if you like the game enough to play it alot. Its not like it costs much money. It lets you play in more games at once (instead of just 1 public and 1 private at a time) which is nice. Has some other features, most of which isn't a big deal unless your teammate doesn't cooperate. The best tool it comes with is for wet -> dry weather conversion, but once again its nothing that you couldn't do the math for without it if you wanted.
Basically if you like the game, and intend to play it alot, spring the $5 or whatever it is to support the guy making it and you then can play more :)

yeah, being able to run more series is one big plus. That way, you have something happening in each of your series every day, maybe half of them being races to watch and the other half being simply qualifying results to eagerly wait for. :)
The thing I like most about KT is that you see your teammates' min/max values. Even if your teammates are super communicative and all, if you don't see their min/max value, you have to write them down somewhere or remember them. With KT, it's all stacked on top of one another. Even more helpful in three driver teams, like the ChampCar we're currently running for FOFC...

For some reason, the A1 series are starting to annoy me. I think you and I are both in the same ones, and yeah I won the race last night.. but just the setup has gotten to grate on my nerves some. With very little pitting and it all being about getting a good qualifying just is annoying me.
I'm sure its just because somehow i ended up in 2 A1 races at a time, so it feels like 1/4th of my games are A1 and once I don't play one for a while I'll like it better :)

Yeah, I actually am not sure what is up with that. I was gaining time on the #2 car for several laps (about .250 seconds each lap I would gain), but the last lap i had the driver error, that did about 60% damage to my car, yet I gained almost 1/2 of a second the last lap which is double what I had been gaining. (plus had the fastest lap of the race there).
So I'm not sure if there had been another lap following it would have been disasterous or not. It said my error occured in turn 5, which isn't even half way through the lap.. So I'm a bit baffled by it, but not complaining :)

I am actually getting the craving to do more F1 2007 again. I only have 2 games right now that I'm playing F1 2007. one I'm 1st place in a ferrari (which isn't too difficult), and the other i am 15th place in a toyota with a teammate who doesn't ever do much of anything. Agreed, having an active teammate makes a big difference and also gives you another driver to follow in the lap by lap of the race. I also gotta say I looove my V8 series with the single driver Paul Cruickshank Racing team. It's a heck of a challenge, being all alone, trying to set up that unresponsive b*tch of a V8 supercar, but the series throws curves at you, like that reverse grid start, and you sorta have to avoid retiring at all cost, cause every position makes points...

We have one team needing 1 driver, one team needing 2 drivers, and we had a complete team quit, so we need a full team of three as well.

as scoobz posted, the BTCC series would be more like what you're describing. It's got a touring and a production side, both competing their race at the same time. For example, I'm in a BTCC series driving an Alfa Romeo 156 in the production side of things. I won a race inproduction, yet finished 15th overall, so there were some faster cars that had to deal with us, lowly production cars...

The one that me and SirFozzie are talking about is an F1 2007 series where we are teammate in teh Super Aguri team.
The other one, where they are talking about making a dynasty out of it is one I found, organized by a veteran of BATracer. It's basically a ChampCar kind of series where everybody is forced to take the exact same car/engine/tire setup with 8 teams of 8 fighting it out in a private league. Me and vex ar both part of existing teams (separate teams) and the other three have been granted a team of their own...

After seeing this thread run by a few times I signed up. I have to do some academy races first. Right now I am in 16122 a BTCC series running a Puegeot 306 in production. I just joined the first open team and luckily my team leader had a decent setup going, because I screwed up practice pretty good. By the time I figured it out I only had 2 sessions left then it said I screwed up and wasted my last one, so I only narrowed down one setting more than my leader.

That Tasman Motorsports team will be an italiano-canadian one my friend... :)
I'm currently in one V8 series as a single driver team, will be interesting to see if I (and we) can do better as a team driver. I'm 11th after 8 races in that series.
Points are given to all finishers so being able to simply make it to the finish is always nice, especially in the first race of a three race event, with the second race being a reverse grid start among the finishers...

I have them. They are handy if you like the game enough to play it alot. Its not like it costs much money. It lets you play in more games at once (instead of just 1 public and 1 private at a time) which is nice. Has some other features, most of which isn't a big deal unless your teammate doesn't cooperate.
Being able to see your teammates' setup is a huge help, even when they are cooperating, as is not having to type up the current setup for posting to teamtalk.
The best tool it comes with is for wet -> dry weather conversion, but once again its nothing that you couldn't do the math for without it if you wanted.
Yup. And actually, the wet/dry tool is slightly more limited because you can only change wetness in increments of 2%, whereas you could go with any percentage you wanted with a spreadsheet calc.
One other thing I use is, at the start of each series I save a copy of my setup with all 50s for the settings. I find it easier to change from that to the engineer's advice than to start from my setting for the previous race.
Mr. Wednesday

So is the Engineer's Advice just a rough guide? He'll say something like "medium," and the ending setting ends up being like an 80.
Mr. Wednesday
07-18-2007, 02:28 PM
The Engineer's advice tells you what the range of the average setting value is (for ones with front and rear) or the specific setting value is (for singular stuff).
Other than brake bias, low is 0 to 33, medium is 33 to 67, high is 67 to 100. Rarely, you'll get an average one or two points beyond that range. You can take advantage of this to cut down on the possible values for a front/rear setting when you already know the rear/front setting, e.g. if you have front wings at 34 with engineer's advice of "medium", then you know that rear wings won't be lower than 32. (If you've got, say, 0 to 38 range, then you don't even bother testing at 30, you maybe test next at 34 or 36.)
For brake bias, safe is 0 to ~45 (typically 40 or lower), medium is 40 to 60, and loose is ~55 to 100.
Mr. Wednesday

if you go to "join midseason game" and enter our game number, it will tell you if there are any drives available. Jesse was the only one available when I checked after you posted the number.
open midseason slots in private games need to be advertised, they don'T show up in the regular "join midseason game" page. Because of that, anybody who would want to join our game should simply enter the game number in the midseason page and see if any drives are available and join at will...

It's the second race of the season, the second of the twin races at Adelaide. Starting order for that second race is the finishing order of the first race so Emiliano started 6th and I started 11th.
As I said, that race was awesome! We were so much faster than the other cars, it was scary. I ended up running up the pack all the way to 1st while Emiliano stayed close and despite a driver error that pushed him back from 6th to 16th in the first lap, he finished right behind me, giving Tasman Motorsports the 1-2!!! :)

Here's a neat little I came accross the other day, it's called the BATracer race exporter. Basically what it does is allow you to save one of your race for reference, or simply future replay.
For example, here's that V8 win I was talking about earlier:
http://frogbatracer.googlepages.com/tasmanwin.htm
The race exporter is simply a website in which you copy/paste the source of your race page and it will spit out a page of code which you can then simply copy/paste in notepad and save with the htm extention, veyr easy to use.
you can find it at this link:

I think the big thing that will push you up in the rankings is winning a public championship.
I still have a couple of issues with the rankings. First is the question of whether they adequately address cherry-picking, second is that I doubt they divide between pre- and post-mid-season-replacement eras. It was a lot different racing when you'd have half (or more) of the field abandoned by the midway point in a season.

To the guys who signed up for the Pacific Racing Challenge Season 5, I'm disappointed in you. I vouched for you, talked all kinds of good about you so you would have an all FOFC team of three and now two of you have disappeared, leaving Travis (sorry, can't seem to make the connection with an FOFC name here) alone and fumbling to find replacements. That's not very good. I know shit can happen in real life, but least you could have done would have been to let your teammate know so he could go and try to find replacements before he's lost a couple races of time... That sucks for him, and for our name...

Every time I sign up for an FOFC league my teammates bail on and I've lost most of my interest in this game. It had such good promise too

well, I play many other series and it's not only with FOFCers that you can have fun. Yeah, some are frustrating, but some are tons of fun...

dola, one good challenge I'm in is one of the V8 single team. Yeah, I don't expect to win many, if any at all, but every little success means a great deal to me. That and there are three races out of 4 days and you keep on working on the setup over the three day events... Currently in 13th place out of 31, the highest of the three single team drivers...

Do you have the ID so I can try to replace a driver?

just realized that in all series together, I have now started over 150 races. Good thing I'm off work for summer vacations and am running 12 series at once. :)
8 of those starts resulted in wins :)

Guys, to clarify this once for all: is the super-official FOFC IndyCar league the ID#15590??? Because I always get a "game full" message. Are there some spots available or not? I'd love to join.

yeah, it was. The series is over, is why you get a "no drives available" message. :)

One was replaced and apparently the other came back to life, it's all full for now. The guy who got to the Front Office Racing, Mark Thomas, is a really nice guy. He's my teammate in my BTCC production series and has helped understand many things, as well as help me be in 2nd place, within reaching distance of the Championship so far...

Good. Well, what we're waiting for, let's start a new one now!
What series do you guys prefer?
Umm, Voo, did you sleep in and miss the qualifying or what?
Yeah. For one of the races I didn't want to waste the soft tires, so instead of just switching to normal for one run I chose to do just the second run. So on the next race it was just one run and I didn't think to look at it and click the make this run button. Hence the non attempt to qualify.

Brand new public A1GP series created, game #16670, plenty of nations still available. I finally joined as Italy.

The A1GP has grown old quick for me. Not too sure why. There are short races in both the BTCC and V8 series, yet I like these two much more. Even a V8 as a single driver team is more fun to me.
Speaking of series and all, would people be in for a fourth FOFC series or should we wait that the summer vacation period dies down? I was thinking maybe a BTCC single class (either touring OR production) that would allow up to 16 drivers in (or maybe more, would need to be tested). Would make for good competition, especially in the production series where most of the cars are similar with only some tiny differences between them...
Just thought I'd see how people feel about it...

I've started a new F1 2007 private game
league: 16719
pass: hornsmaniac
I'm going to try something different and make a smaller league...so once the top 6 or 7 teams fill up I'm going to close it down and start the league. FYI.

My personal problem with A1GP is that it's just too random. Without the ability to select Thinker or Charisma, all it takes is one bad roll in practice, and you've basically screwed the next three days.

but still even with a V8, I have the feeling that much more interesting stuff can happen with the V8, even though I pretty much everyone of my three race event start for me with a couple strikes. The reverse grid events, the total mayhems and all, they make the V8's more fun than the A1GP, or at least that's my feeling...

I can think of several factors favoring the V8s over A1:
* Point structure keeps fights for places interesting over the entire field, whereas in A1, 11th is no different from 25th. I'm happy with a top 10 finish in V8s, but I don't like being lower than 6th in A1. (The A1 setup favors more aggressive driver settings, but the V8 setup produces a more interesting race.)
* Reverse grid races make it somewhat easier to score a good finish after an unlucky first round (although if you retire you're starting from the back).
* Longer races lead to more room for action.
I'm not sure if there are more passes in V8s than A1 or no.

From the department of LOL, in one of the academy games, a racer won the championship by default. Every single other driver was a midseason replacement or an opt-out.
He took it home with a total of 2 pts in a Toyota.

all very valid points and one more regarding the point structure is the penalty with not finishing a race. I'm sometimes very, very happy to limp to a 24th place out of 31, maybe even as I drop from say 10th place with 6 laps to go, because I know I will still get points. I that case, I still have an interest for the last 6 laps. That certainly wouldn't be the same in A1GP.

A cursory examination suggests that there's no more passing in V8 than A1. I agree with everything else though.
