KAWASAKI, Japan -- Craig Coffin kicked a 22-yard field goal in overtime to lift the United States past Japan 23-20 on Sunday to win the American football World Cup.

University of Nebraska-Omaha running back Kyle Kasperbauer was named MVP of the game after scoring two touchdowns and running for 54 yards on 15 carries.

"We watched them in previous games and knew it would be a tough match," U.S. coach John Mackovic said.

Japan kicker Yosuke Kaneoya missed a chance to win the game with a 34-yard field goal in overtime and Coffin sealed victory on the ensuing possession with his second successful field goal in extra time.

With 2:51 remaining in the fourth quarter, Kasperbauer ran for a 10-yard touchdown to tie the game 17-17.

Kasperbauer scored the first touchdown of the game three minutes into the first quarter on a 9-yard run.

"It was an impressive game," Kasperbauer said. "Both teams played well given the conditions."

The United States was taking part in the tournament for the first time with a team of college players from Divisions I, II and III.

The Americans finished first in Group B after defeating South Korea 77-0 and Germany 33-3.

The tournament is being played for the third time. Japan won in 1999 and 2003.

Japan looked set for its third straight title when quarterback Yuichi Tomizawa passed to Takuro Mayuzumi, who ran in for a touchdown with seven minutes left in regulation.

Germany defeated Sweden 7-0 Saturday to win the bronze medal.
Japan was, up until this year, apparently the class of the world in American Football. Who knew?

Wow, I thought we were going to take care of Japan fairly handily. I wasn't expecting such a close one.

I wonder how ugly the scores would be if we actually sent higher level D1 players?

Seems odd that there were at least 2 American Football World Cups without an American football team.

Shouldn't they call it the Gridiron World Cup or something? American Football World Cup sounds dumb.

Shouldn't they call it the Gridiron World Cup or something? American Football World Cup sounds dumb.shrug, growing up in thailand, we always referred to it as "american football" (versus football AKA soccer).
