My dad's computer blew the hard drive, a friend of mine took the old drive and recovered mostly everything and I am loaning my dad a computer for the time being. The computer came with Office XP, but for whatever reason it was never "authenticated". So I came over today and tried to authenticate it, entered the code on the back of the software, off the Certificate of Authentication, and it said it was invalid.

I called Microsoft and told the rep what was going on, she said it was a valid code, she wasn't sure why it wasn't working. She issued a new code, however that didn't work either. She recommended uninstalling the software and reinstalling, which I did. It took the code, but when I open Outlook I get the following message: Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Unable to display the selected folder or item. Could not open the item. Try again. I click OK and it just goes away.

Does anyone have any clue what is going on? The only thing I can do in outlook right now is open a version of Windows Explorer, brings up C drive, my documents, etc...but when I click on My Shortcuts or Outlook Shortcuts, nothing happens.

HELP!!!!

Ugh! Go to Control Panel ---> Select Mail ---> Then go the Profiles Section and select Show Profiles. From here, add a new profile and add your name. Try to use that one and see if Outlook opens.

On top of that, if reinstalled everything on a new hard drive, make sure that it has all the service packs before installing any new versions of Office.

I don't have a Mail option...I have...

Appearance and Themes
Network and Internet Connections
Add or Remove Programs
Sounds, Speech and Audio Devices
Performance and Maintenance
Printers or Other Hardware
User Accounts
Date, Time, Language and Regional Options
Accessibility Options
Security Center

Any ideas/suggestions? Thanks Ant! :)
