View Full Version : Civ IV won't install

I have scoured the internet in search of fixes to no avail until the wee hours of the morning two nights in a row, and thought I would give one last ditch effort at the trusty ole' FOFC.

It is the weirdest thing. I can install both disks, but on disk two the VERY last thing it does is give the error prompt

"Feature transfer error"
Feature: C++ runtime libraries 7.1
Component:
File:
Error: Incorrect function

As long as I don't hit the "ok" on the prompt everything looks as if it is installed. I even put disk 1 back in and am able to play and save a game with no hitches, but to play I have to install the game everytime and avoid hitting the "ok" button until I am done playing.

Things I have done:

1. Updated the installer.
2. Tried the latest patch from the update game menu. (the game says no installation found even though I am playing it).
3. Booted up in safe mode and tried installing.
4. Searched until I am bleary eyed for an answer to a problem that is maddening.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Check out the civfanatics.com tech support forum, they helped me out of a bunch of jams like this.

The only thing that comes to mind is that you might not have the proper version of DirectX installed.

Thanks Molson! I thought I had checked every Civ site known to man.

I tried updating the directx but it didn't do the trick.

It seems as though it installs everything fine, but hangs up as it is exiting setup. The last thing on the setup is "installing C:\...\SidMeir'sCivilization4.msi" and then the error.

I wondered if maybe it was hanging up on a security check because of the way it actually installs and then wipes it away as soon as you hit "ok". I understand companies wanting to protect their product, but having to try to fix a legally purchased game is maddening. I have read that it might be hanging up on a burner detection, but the only thing I have is the dvd burner that came with the hp comp.

Thanks again.

Thanks again Molson! After hours and hours I was able to find a hobbled together fix. I used a suggestion on the forum you steered me towards.

"Workaround: Rename the directory and then move it before closing the error message and run it from the new location. Note that Disc1 is the actual play disk (some are mislabeled)."

I then had to use a program to defeat security checks (On a legally purchased copy)... go figure. Anyway now it works.

Thanks again!

Tried to update the game with latest patch and it says no version of Civilization iv found. Truly a weird deal.

Tried to update the game with latest patch and it says no version of Civilization iv found. Truly a weird deal.

I had problems running the new Warlords patch, until I installed DirectX 9C. Which was really confusing, because even DirectX 10 didn't do the job.

Yeah, that directx can be finnicky. Thanks for the help again. It turned out to be a defective disk 2 that was corrupted at the manufacturer. I bought it on ebay, and the seller is a good one that is sending me a replacement.
Thanks again,
