Fri Jul 20, 5:09 PM ET
MONTERREY, Mexico (AFP) - A Mexican tipping the scales at 560 kilograms (1,234 pounds) will be listed as the world's fattest man by the Guinness Book of Records, while a loss of 200 kilos (440 pounds) may make him the man who lost the most weight.
"I'm glad to be in the Guinness Book as the fattest man. I am also happy to have lost 200 kilos," Manuel Uribe, 41, told AFP.
Uribe was able to leave his home in Monterrey, northern Mexico in March aboard a trailer to celebrate his weight loss.
Guinness has recognized his weighty achievement with a glass plaque.
"They gave it to me, I have it in my hands," said Uribe, who founded an organization to help overweight people.
Uribe's photograph appears in the 2008 Guinness Book of Records alongside a description of the treatment he has had and offers of surgery he has received.
Uribe said the editor of the book had promised to visit him next year, and held out the possibility of appearing in the 2009 edition as the man who had lost the most weight.
Uribe appeared on television in 2006 seeking help for his excess weight, which has plagued him for more than 20 years, most of which he has spent in bed.

First a Mexican surpasses Bill Gates as the richest person in the world, and now a Mexican claims the mantle as World's Fattest Man. Instead of being worried about immigrants coming North, we should be worried about our hard fought world records heading South!

I saw the 1-hour documentary on him last week. I think it's been over a year since he was that heavy. He actually opted for diet over gastric bypass surgery, and was able to lose several hundred pounds, which is impressive.
The documentary ended with the Monterrey townsfolk wheeling him down the street, with a mariachi band playing alongside. He looked like a Macy's day parade float.

That picture is horribly depressing, not just because of his condition, but because of the shabbiness of his surroundings in which he's trapped himself.
My favorite part of the photo is the modest pair of sunglasses hanging on the wall, within convenient reach. At what point in your 1200 pound, indoor-living, bed-sore-having, bucket-pissing, naked and sweaty man-boobing life do you think "Time to rock the shades!"?

I saw it several months ago and was shocked to hear the guy does not have high cholesterol, or diabetes or anything like that... it just boggles my mind.

I remember watching Jean Claude in that pose in Bloodsport (remember, this is before he sold out and went commercial, and started doing it in every movie) and thinking, "Badass! I bet it'd be even cooler if he was inhumanly fat. And Mexican. And mostly naked."
All those years of wondering all come flooding back now. And I think to myself, what a wonderful world.
Welcome to Hollywood, Manuel. Welcome, indeed.

He's gotta have some stuff growing in his folds. There should be no world records for this. There should only be death by starvation.

This thread title reminds me of the time my brother sat on Electric Avenue.
There should only be death by starvation.
Hmm, do ya suppose if we just stop allowing him to eat, with the intent of starving him to death, he could actually set another record by living longer than anyone else in modern history? I'd imagine he's got a lotta nutrition stored up in them there jelly rolls.
Just sayin.

I think that if a person stops eating completely, their body begins to cannibalize muscle before it goes after fat. Since the heart is a muscle, that spells bad news for the starving person even if they do have massive fat reserves...

I've just have never understood how mocking morbidly obese people is funny. It's like laughing at a person with cirrhosis - they probably did it to themself, but it's still not funny.
I guess I've never gotten a kick out of shooting fish in a barrel.
