The Man Behind the name
So were you born and raised in OC? What city in OC do you reside in?
I was born and raised in the city of Stanton, which is in Orange County. Stanton is a blip to just about everyone in OC. There are the people that have never heard of it (yet I can bet they have driven through it). And there are the people that regret knowing it. It’s not the best city in the area, but it really isn’t that bad. It just gets a bad rap. Just for reference, Stanton is about 5 miles West of Disneyland. My wife and I current reside in Santa Ana, which is “Downtown Orange County”. I usually say I live in Orange, because we are right on the border of Orange and Santa Ana, and I’d rather live in Orange. We’d like to get a home in Old Towne Orange eventually.
Is your screenname really as obvious as your first and last name? Every time I see your name, I read "danger - ion." I'm not sure why exactly. Dan Garion makes sense, too.
My screenname is not my first and last name. I am not Dan Garion. My name is Daniel Schoonover. DanGarion is a mixup of my name and a character from my favorite book series by David Eddings (The Belgariad). The characters name was Garion, but later in the book was changed to Belgarion. My first screen name online was Belgarion, then my friends mixed up the two and started calling me DanGarion. And so 99% of the DanGarion’s you will find on the internet are mine.
Once you've answered all the questions that people ask you, what is one thing you'd like to share that WASN'T asked? To help us get to know you, I mean.
Music, no one asked me about music. My current favorite music bands are (in no particular order). Jimmy Eat World, The Format, MAE, The Postal Service, Gin Blossoms, Dashboard Confessional, Plain White T’s (I liked them before they were recently popular), Jack’s Mannequin, Death Cab for Cutie, Counting Crows, Glen Phillips, Toad the Wet Sprocket.
Do you have a significant other (girlfriend, boyfriend, spouse, etc?)?
I have a wife. We have been married for 1 year as of July 29th. She runs the dog grooming shop that we own (she also grooms). More about her and I later.
Here is a picture from our wedding day. We went to Old Towne Orange and had our pictures taken. This is the table we first met at.

Do you have any pets?
We have three animals, two that live at my wife’s parents house, cat named Herbert, and dog named Lilly (until we get a home they can be at), and one cat that lives with us, named Buster.
Buster http://www.dangarion.com/mediagallery/mediaobjects/tn/0/0_img_0011.jpg
Lilly http://www.dangarion.com/mediagallery/mediaobjects/disp/e/eb68c433f11b24a7207f423c783ab430.jpg
What are your biggest pet peeves?
I have two that equally annoy me. First one is undependable / flakey people. I can’t stand this. If you say you are going to be somewhere at a certain time, or do something for me, please do it. I don’t have the patience to deal with people that can’t get their act straight. Second one is going to be people that drive like idiots, especially motorcycle riders. It annoys me that they are allowed to split lanes in California, when I feel it’s one of the most dangerous practices for both them and everyone else on the road.
Who plays dangarion in 'DANGARION-THE MOTION PICTURE'?
Greg Grunberg of Felicty, Alias, and Hero’s fame.
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0342399/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greg_Grunberg
What is your favorite sports sim?
Out of the Park Baseball. Even though it annoys the hell out of me when I’m playing multiplayer. I have a lot of sports sims. OOTP, Baseball Mogul, Puresim, FM 2005, EHM, FOF, TCY, Total Pro Basketball (first ver), Total Pro Football. ITP. Probably others that I’ve forgotten.
What kinds of games do you play outside of sports sims?
Well I don’t really play any computer games much at all anymore. I used to play Ultima Online, played for about 4 years and was very involved in the Role Playing community, enough so that I am one of the admins and owners of the Pacific Roleplaying Community website (http://www.theprc.com) (http://www.theprc.com%29/). I haven’t played UO for about 3-4 years now. Other favorites, Half-life, Day of Defeat (used to run a server and stats site), sports games on Xbox and 360 (although I haven’t found many to my liking lately).
The Beatles or Elvis?
Beatles. I was brought up on Rolling Stones, Beatles, Beach Boys, Jan and Dean, Rod Stewart, and Neil Diamond. I’m actually surprised I didn’t get many questions about my music tastes. But I’ll save my music talk to the post above about something that wasn’t asked…
Beer or wine?
Beer! Pyramid Hefeweizen to be exact. I also enjoy Amstel Light. Although my brother in laws have got me to enjoy Miller Lite. Wine isn’t too bad either though, but beer goes better with most foods.
Worst Christmas present you ever got? Best? Do you re-gift?
Wow, I can’t really remember what my worst I ever got was, we didn’t really grow up with that much money, but my parents always made sure they took good care of us during Christmas time. Best gift when I was a kid was an Atari 2600, I loved that. And then a couple years later to got me an Atari 400xl, that is what started my fascination with computers. And no, I don’t normally regift, unless it’s a gift certificate for something I’m not fond of.
Do you have an abnormal fear?
I don’t like descending steep hills. That’s my main reason for not going on rollercoasters. I love the engineering and architecture of rollercoasters but I just can get myself to go on anything more intense then Space Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain, at Disneyland (both of which I absolutely love).
Do you wear sunglasses at night?
No. funny thing though. I used to buy cheap sunglasses (the 8-10 dollar variety) and I would always loose them. Ever since I bought a pair of Black Flies that cost be $50+ I have never lost a pair. I’ve determined that if I spend more money on something like glasses I take a lot better care of them. In the last 7 years I only have three pair of glasses, and that’s only because I have Oakleys I wear for driving and softball, and my old Black Flies were getting scratched up finally.
Who is/was the best celebrity couple?
Are Brad and Jen still together? Or how about Jennifer Garner and the guy from Felicty? Oh wait they are all broke up now. Probably Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prince, or Allyison Hannigan and the guy from Buffy/Angel.
Favorite movie quote.
"Pain heals. Chicks dig scars. Glory... lasts forever..." (from the Replacements), which I think is originally from a Black Flag song.
Bros or hoes??
Before I was married, it was all about Bros. Now…
How does it feel to work for a multi-national conglomerate, one that is hated by many?
Heh. For those of you that don’t know, I work for Time Warner Cable. I have worked for Time Warner for 9 ½ years. I really like working here. But you know what, it’s really just a job. People can hate my company, but when they see that I’m dedicated and care about my work, they can’t hate me. I think the hatred is really focused on the wrong being, Time Warner is just trying to do the same thing any other public company is trying to do, which is keep their investors happy. And there are a lot of people here that really do go above and beyond for customers, even when the customers are not being understanding. Time Warner Cable has treated me well through my years, and it’s good to know and see that they promote from within, that’s why I’m where I am today, in the Training field.
Can you get me free movie Channels if I tip you 50 bucks?
Nope. I’m sure a tech could ask dispatch to give you it free for a couple months, but eventually the billing is going to kick in and you’ll be paying for it.
Are you a push-Schoonover with the woman?
I’m happy when my wife is happy. But honestly, my wife isn’t difficult at all. We are both easy going people for the most part. But whatever she wants she gets, because that makes me happy. So if you want to call that a pushover, I’m guilty!
Who makes the family decisions? Don't give me that 50-50 crap, we all know what the deal is.
My wife says she does. But I think I just let her make them, and then I adjust the decision afterwards to fit how I want it to work. I’m usually pretty good at predicting outcomes of events, so if I see something isn’t going to work out the way my wife feels it may, I usually am good at explaining and convincing her to my way of thinking… ;)
Boxers or briefs?
Boxers!
Simpsons or Family Guy?
I can go for either of them, but I don’t really make it a priority to watch every new episode. There is a lot of other stuff I’d rather watch.
Do you have an abnormal ear?
Yes I think I do. But it’s normal again now. It all the sudden healed up on it’s own the morning before I was going to head to the doctors about it.
3 people (living, dead or fictional) you would like to have a drink/meal with?
David Letterman, Ben Franklin, Jack Bauer
That would be some kick ass conversation.
Favorite movie and TV show growing up and favorite movie and TV show now?
Growing up I loved Growing Pains and always would watch the Brady Bunch. I wasn’t really into kid movies when I was growing up, I really like Top Gun when it came out. Favorite movie today is such a toss up, it depends on my mood. Swingers, Forrest Gump, The Shawshank Redemption, Saving Private Ryan, High Fidelity, Jerry Maguire, Almost Famous, Rushmore, Office Space, are all ones I thought of right now, but I love lots of movies. As for TV Shows, where do I begin. The Office, Scrubs, My Name is Earl, Alias, Angel, Buffy, Firefly, 24, Entourage, Eureka, Arrested Development, Heroes, Studio 60, How I Met Your Mother, Lost, Smallville, are the ones I watch, and if I watch them they are my favorites!
One of the strangest things/events you've ever seen?
I can’t think of anything. I’ll get back to this one if I can think of one.
Would you rather be stuck on the 405/5 merge at 5PM on a Friday with Rosie O'Donell as your passenger or Carrot Top?
Ouch, I’d rather not be stuck there at all. But I guess if I had to be, it would be Carrot Top, Rosie really annoys me. Plus I could kick Carrot Top out of the car, he’s from Orange County, he could find his way home!
I don't know you, but, tell me one thing that would make me say, "Hey, this Da Ngarion guy from Vietnam is pretty cool!"
I scored the highest possible 99th percentile for GATE testing when I was in 1st grade. GATE stands for Gifted and Talented Education (basically it’s school for all the smart kids).
How's your road rage?
I get angry at the people that press my buttons with my pet peeves, but I don’t take it out of my driving.
Settle this on-going debate: In 'n Out, Fat Burger, or Tommy's?
In’n’Out and Fat Burger are both great, if I’m choosing one it’s In’n’Out Animal Style burger and fries. Tommy’s has nothing on either of them, Tommy’s is only good in the middle of the night right before you go to sleep.
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
In a Southern California that had about 20% of it’s current population. I love it hear, the weather is great and there are so many attractions, but it’s CROWDED!
Favorite vacation spot?
Zion and Yellowstone National Parks. I haven’t traveled outside of the US (yet).
What are your plans for FOFC Wiki? What is the last thing you updated on there?
My plans are to let people develop it and then sell it to some huge corporation and retire. I haven’t updating anything there for awhile. I was sort of hoping some people would be interested in doing most the work. I like to give people the tools to do stuff, I’m great with making things work and keeping htem online, but I’m not a big fan of actual development.
How did you meet your wife?
We met online, on Yahoo Personals. I had been on Yahoo Personals for quite a while off and on and met a handful of girls, but none of them ever really clicked fully with me. Then one day I’m out of town in Vegas and this girl messaged me on Yahoo on my home computer. I remoted into my computer and saw the message and messaged her back (but it was the next day), she wasn’t sure who I was at first. I messaged her again when I got back home and explained she contacted me on Yahoo Personals. After a week or two of talking online and me not asking her to meet (because I was getting tired of finding interesting girls that then ended up being completely different in person) she went ahead and asked me out. So we met at a coffee shop and talked for 4 hours that night. We really hit it off. That was in January 2005, and on July 29th, 2005 we married.
Before you got married, did you ask your wife if you could name your first-born "Garion?"
Hah, no. I don’t want a weird name for our kids, if we ever actually decide to have any.
Excluding your wife, who are the five most beautiful women in the world?
Jennifer Love Hewitt
Kate Beckinsale
Selma Hayek
Katharine Higel
Julia Roberts
What is it like being an owner of a small business? Any tips? Any mistakes to avoid?
Well we are only 1 month into it. Probably my biggest piece of advise is that you should locate and talk with your local Small Business Administration, and Small Business Development Center. These places are paid for by tax dollars, and are free for our use as taxpayers. They can be very helpful in getting loans and making sure you’ve handled all the paperwork. Other then that, I can’t think of anything yet!
Can you post your Little League baseball picture?
How about my Freshman Baseball and AYSO Soccer pictures instead? I never played Little League Baseball, didn’t play baseball till I was in high school.

Where do you see yourself in five-years?
Hopefully our business loan is paid off, our credit cards are paid off, and we are now only in debt because of the house we purchased in Orange County. Other then that I don’t really need much more.
What's the worst freeway in the LA?
Well I’m in Orange County, LA freeways all suck, 405, 101, 5, all terrible. Orange County wise the 405 is bad, but the 91 out to the Inland Empire is the worst when you are talking about stop and go. My wife would probably chime in with the 55 from Newport to the 22, the 11 mile stretch takes 45+ minutes.
Ever been to Slauson's swap meet?
Nope, but I’ve been to the Orange County Fair Marketplace (swapmeet).
We really try to limit our time in LA ;).
Sports
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.. best name ever or wtf are they doing?
Dumbest marketing ploy ever. Anaheim is NOT Los Angeles, and the only Los Angeles baseball team is the Dodgers, period.
Of the sports that are discussed here routinely (soccer, football, basketball, hockey, NASCAR, baseball), which is your favorite?
Baseball, Football, NASCAR, in that order (when it comes to professional). If you are going to include college, it would be College Football first.
What is your favorite team?
Depends on the sport.
College – USC, (but I also cheer on local teams like UCLA, I’m not a typical homer like most USC and UCLA fans that despise and hate the other team, I cheer on UCLA when they don’t play USC, I enjoy the fierce competition).
Baseball – Dodgers and then Angels. Grew up a Dodger fan, because my dad enjoys watching them. My grandfather loved the Angels, so I went to a number of Angels games growing up. They are in different leagues so I can like them both (once again I don’t play the Homer card and just hate a team because others do). But I also follow a lot of players that I enjoy watching on other teams.
Football – I wish we had a local team (even though USC is probably better then any local team we would get!). When I started finally watching football (late 80’s) I saw the San Francisco 49ers and just was in awe. So the Niners are one of my teams, and then I was really getting into the San Diego Chargers before they traded away Drew Brees, I still enjoy watching Charger games though. I tend to follow players when it comes to football.
NASCAR – Tony Stewart, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jimmy Johnson., this is another one I’m weird with, I love Chevy, but I tend to enjoy any of the drivers that I see interviewed and appear to be just overall nice guys, I could name about 10 drivers I like.
NBA – The 80’s Lakers. Any Laker team without Kobe Bryant.
College or pros for sports?
College Football. Any other sport I go pro.
Michael Vick. Discuss.
One of the most overrated football players in the last 10 years. A complete idiot for whatever was happening at the property he owned. No matter if he was directly involved or if he just owned the land, he is responsible for anything happened on that property. When you are in a position of “celebrity” and you are responsible for anything that happens to anything to own. Period. And if he was directly involved with what was going on at that house, he’s the pretty close to the lowest scum on earth. If I believed in corporal punishment I would say they should have his own dogs eat him alive, but that’s not they way I roll. I’d rather seem him rot in jail for the maximum sentence.
Which pro Football team do you like?
Answered above.
Larry Bird or Magic Johnson?
Strictly speaking on the hard court. Magic Johnson. He was an amazing basketball player, and being that I live in the LA Metropolitan area I saw a lot of the Lake Show. Now if you are talking about the human being themselves. Larry Bird, humble player and just and overall good character guy, something I think Magic Johnson lacks (too many stories of infidelity about him, both in the media, and for people I know who have actually seen it, same goes for Michael Jordan).
If you're an Angels fan, what's your favorite all time Angel?
Brian Downing, I was always impressed by his huge arms! But I would think my favorite all time Angel is the Cowboy himself, Gene Autry.
What is the tension like in your house when ND and USC play?
Background on this one. My wife is Irish and Catholic, so in her household it’s Notre Dame. I being a Big USC fan, here lots of crap from my one brother in law that really likes the Irish, plus my wife usually beings things up too. So far I’m winning since Notre Dame hasn’t beat the Trojans in recent history.
What should happen to USC if Reggie Bush is found guilty of taking money while he was at USC?
Are you asking what should happen or what will? What should happen is that USC shouldn’t be responsible for what he did, if the did not have knowledge of it. This type of stuff happens everywhere it’s just Reggie was stupid and got caught; do I hate the guy for it? No, he’s one of the most amazing players I ever saw play at USC. What will happen is the Trojans will get a slap on the wrist and then UCLA will pass out so more handicap placards to their players, which Notre Dame continues bringing their hopeful recruits to the school in Limos.
Will you send me a hat of your favorite college team?
It depends what are you planning to do to it?
How bad will WVU beat USC in the National Championship Game this year?
Stop drinking the Koolaid Charlie! WVU in the National Championship. That’s almost as funny as someone telling me Notre Dame should be BCS game.
Would you bet your house that Pete Carroll has never violated recruiting regulations?
Yes. I don’t have a house so that’s easy. But honestly I think Pete runs a clean program, some people think he’s arrogant, but it’s confident people like me that realize it’s confidence that he shows. Pete is great for USC and he’s the reason why College Football is the big show in LA, not College Basketball…
What is your favorite sports memory?
Watching the whole Dodgers vs. Astros 20+ inning game at the Astrodome back in like the late 80’s. I watched the whole game on TV, listing to Vin Scully.
Which of your favorite sports teams would you most like to see win a championship?
I’d love to see the Dodgers win one, we’ve gone through a long enough drought.
What is your all-time Dodgers' starting nine?
I’m assuming you are asking about the real Dodgers.
SP Orel Hershiser
C Mike Lo Piazosciatin (Scioscia’s defense with Pizza’s offense, along with some Lo Duca, and Russell Martin)
1B Eric Karros
2B Steve Sax
3B Ron Cey
SS Bill Russell
OF Kirk Gibson (I’d throw him in center since neither other guy could do it)
OF Mike Marshall (Gibson would keep his whiney ass in check)
OF Pedro Guerrero
Closer Eric Gagne
PH Lenny Harris
(Teammate Pedro Guerrero, an outfielder pressed into service at third base in 1983, once reportedly stated that his first thought whenever he was in the field was "I hope they don't hit it to me," while his second thought was "I hope they don't hit it to Sax.")
What would you think about Barry Bonds breaking Hank Aaron's HR record in Dodger Stadium? Funny? Irritating?
Funny thing about this question, I’m going to the Dodgers vs. Giants game on Thursday night. I think it would be awesome to be at a record breaking event like this. If he does when I’m there I will be booing while I’m clapping. It would be irritating since Aaron broke it against the Dodgers, and the Giants are the Dodgers hated rivals.
RWBL
What the hell is wrong with Walter Pesante?
Doug Bourdeax took all his mojo before I traded him. That’s why I was able to send Pesante away I knew he would be useless.
Which Torres brother was best?
Joe Torres put up the highest ever win shares for any pitcher ever in the RWBL. http://reference.rwbl.net/players/t/torresjoe870.html
If you could steal two RWBL players for your team, who would it be? And do you think those 2 guys could win you a title with your currently assembled team?
William Carrera and Earl Lindsey. We wouldn’t win anything, they would both be lucky to hit 30 Hrs at Dodger Stadium. And my team would once again underachive.
Who is your biggest RWBL rival GM?
I have to say it’s Nate. He kicks my ass every year since he’s joined, no matter what I try to do.
If we held an all-time RWBL battle royal, who would be the final five in the ring? Who would win it all?
Final five. Steve, Brian, Myself, Koji, and Schmidty. Koji wold end up shanking us all though, he’s a tough mofo.
So were you born and raised in OC? What city in OC do you reside in?
