If you never see the point of buying every yearly update of EA's sports titles, EA's about to give you one: from September 1 it will begin shutting down the online servers for most of its 2006-edition sports titles.

As of that date, the online gameplay options on games like Fifa World Cup 2006, NBA Live 06, Madden 06 and Tiger Woods 06 will be rendered useless on all formats including PC.

This means you'll have to purchase the newer editions of the games to continue the fight via the web, or stick to split-screen games. The full list of games to be effected is below.

Can you host your own games on these games or do you have to play online on their servers? I'm going to assume that it's only on their servers.

Yeah but is the fact they scrapped plans on a hopscotch sim all that bad?

You can only play MP on their servers (regardless of which platform you are using.)

I think they actually added that back to EA Playground for the Wii.

You have no idea how devastated I was. I had a an MP universe all set up with thousands of participants, then BAAAAM!

All that time wasted on hopscotch:mad: I have decided that with all my spare time now, I am giving out random swift kicks in the nuts to innocent bystanders to make the time pass by faster.

what you really need is an EA matchmaking server then

Why I hate EA reason 2,136

That Dr. J keeps blocking my shot when I play One on One.

Damn you EA!

You know, when I first read this and saw the list of games, I got a little alarmed myself. It took me a moment to realize that they were generally talking about the 06 games, as in the games that came out two years ago. All of the games on the list are old, and I don't think it's a travesty that EA is taking servers for them offline.

At worst, if you enjoy playing games like NBA Live or Madden online, you'll have to go spend $20 on the 07 version. I don't think it's unreasonable to run servers for only two years' worth of games, but I'm no expert.

I agree. EA does some terrible things, but I don't think this is one of them.

Most companies do 5 years at the absolute shortest.

I'd have no problem with this if there was some other way to play multi, (like in PC games, where you can just pop in an IP address for another player), but this is awful early to take away mp content.

Honestly, you're overspending if you spend that much. The console versions are dirt-cheap used and the PC versions can be found for $10 if you shop around.

What kinds of games are we talking about, though? EA is putting out a new game in these series every year, for the most part. It's not that EA would be supporting one Madden game for five years. It's that EA would be supporting five Madden games during one year. It seems a bit excessive to me, although I do agree that they could have put direct connections into the game so that you wouldn't have to go through EA servers.

Yeah, this is true. I was just throwing out a number to illustrate the point. At first glance, it looked like EA was making people spend $50 or $60 to continue playing EA Sports games online, but it doesn't have to be nearly that much.

I guess that would be reason 2 that I hate EA. The first reason, of course, is that Dr. J keeps blocking your shots.

This is the least suprising news ever. In fact, it tells you this in the instructions somewhere. It's not some shocking suprise that the Madden 06 server won't be operational forever. And seriously, who the hell is still playing Madden 06 at this point anyways?

I need to see if Bomberman Online's servers are still up for Dreamcast. I remember buying a Dreamcast once it was revealed that Sega was done with it, and got Bomberman to play with friends. I tried the online mode, and it was still up! People were playing too! I found that so odd.

Bird would drain 3s while Dr. J knocks himself out on the rim.

Phantasy Star Online for the Dreamcast was online for quite a while, too.
