What can you do if you're missing a file but you're updated on Windows? I don't know enough about these things but there seem to be many websites (http://www.dlldump.com/ looking like the best) that seem to remedy the situation. However, I'm a bit fearful in their reliability. Any suggestions from anyone?

Do you actually know the specific file you're missing?

Or, if not...what makes you think you are?

It's actually for a friend of mine. He's missing dunzip32.dll

what's his OS? 98...2000...XP?

EDIT: You wouldnt happen know the exact error message, or problem(s) by any chance? The reason I ask is that missing dunzip.dll might just be the FIRST problem for what he is doing, if he is missing something else he may need a few more once dunzip.dll is "fixed'.

To answer your original question...I really dont know how reliable sites like that are, but I would imagine they might be able to correct certain problems.

I would definitely try to correct via Microsoft first, though. Maybe he has.

He's running XP. He downloaded all the service packs again and nothing happened for him. I have a feeling if he does fix this first problem, there will be more to follow.

He may have it...and it may not be registered. Or, he may need to download it again(perhaps he uninstalled something that used it, etc...lots of possibilities).

Here is a site I found that goes through the process...http://dllcity.com/

It seems to have decent instructions on how & where to download the .dll you are missing. Not trying to split hairs, but I believe it might dunzip32.dll...although I could be wrong if it is application specific.

It is 32...I forgot to type it though.

OK...good deal.

It most likely needs to go in C:/WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/....but I would doublecheck that on the site, and possibly look at support documentation if it is in relation to a specific app. If he is unsure as to which folder it belongs in, (i.e. system or system32, or some other folder, etc.)...so long as he does not overwrite an existing file in that folder, it shouldnt hurt anything to have that dll in 2 places. Windows just wont use the one that's in the wrong place. But naturally, it's better to not go throwing files around where they dont belong.

HTH.

That's where I told him to put them. He lives in DC. I know I could fix it for him in about 15 minutes but he might never fix it...rich enough to say just screw it and buy a new computer.

:D

Yeah...even if he does put it there, he does need to register them as well for them to function. That site has a quick writeup for how to do it(it's like 4 steps I think), but I havent needed to use it to verify whether it is accurate.

Hopefully, he can figure it out somehow. Thanks for the help.
