View Full Version : Duels - new web game

I've been messing around with a new web game called Duels, it's very impressive so far, they've put a lot of work into it with graphics and so forth. Essentially the game is that you make a warrior with various stats, and duel other players and NPCs. As you do so, you get gold, experience, and tokens. There is also a lot of equipment you can buy. The equipment is set up a lot like World of Warcraft, there's various tiers that are color coded, and you need higher levels to be able to wield a lot of it. There's also a skill tree, also similar to WoW where you can advance your character each time he levels, and there are a few different trees to choose from.

The game is brand new and I really think they're going to put a lot of work into making it a great game. Their idea is to give you the character development of a MMORPG but without all the time invested. Up till now there has been tremendous lag on the servers but they've gotten rid of most of that as of today. There are still some bugs with their pack system (basically the tokens you earn from fighting you can use to buy packs, sort of like a CCG, that give you random, often good equipment, and scrolls to use during battles.)

It definitely looks like something people from FOFC could get into.

Here's an example of one of the items in the game, there's a lot of detailed background and lore on a lot of the items. On the left you see my character, active challenges, how much gold I have, and so forth.

You can avoid some rookie mistakes I made. You can only equip equipment with a total value of your current power or less, when you start you already have a knife equipped that costs 17, so at first you can only equip armor that costs 8 or less. Your power goes up when you level and starts ramping up fairly rapidly after level 5.

Make sure to do all the quests, you get a lot of easy experience and gold.

See the gloves I bought only cost me 6 gold, but it's a 21 power. My little shitty sword is 17, so that would be 38, but I'm only allowed to equip to 30. Here's my first rookie mistake. :)

Yeah they are still working out some bugs in the pack system, before they fixed the lag it was horrible, you could almost never successfully buy a pack. Now they're mostly working on the bug you (and I) have experienced, pack opening bug. They say they've logged all these things and reimbursement will be coming at some point once they've fixed the issue.

From what I've seen so far, strength and stamina are a lot better than all the other statistics, at least at low levels. Maybe the others like speed and precision get more useful later on, but I'd say up to level 10 or so put all the points into strength and stamina.

Brillig
08-11-2007, 02:15 PM
In case no one's figured it out, you can sell the stuff you get from packs that you don't want. Just go to the armory and find the listing for the item under the duels set, then click the sell link. It'll let you specify a price and away you go. There's also a list of the last five transactions to help you figure out a good price.

Better than just vendoring the stuff.

Peregrine
08-11-2007, 02:18 PM
In addition, if you find an item you want but no one is selling, you can enter a "want to buy" price and someone might sell it to you later on.

I sure hope so since those are the two I've been focusing on. I'm 21-20, but I've been losing a lot more than winning in my last dozen fights or so. I think I'm going to keep going this route, though, just to see where it's taking me. (Not like this game is costing me money, so I feel free to just experiment.)

Well my experience was my first guy Anakh I scattered my points around, put a lot into INT since he's a Staff guy, and he is getting completely owned, with a record of about 50-105. I made a new guy who did just strength and stamina, and it's been night and day, he has a 25-11 record so far.

I think it's one of those things that's on their list, the stats need to be balanced at some point. Personally I haven't found it that bad to have a bad record, it means a lot of people challenge you and saves you the time to find so many people to challenge.

Well I love the concept of the game, but I really wish it were a little more important to actually win. As it is right now, there's really very little incentive to win other than having a decent record. The game economy needs a major tweak as well. I think tokens are too easy to get and that results in flooding the market with high quality items. Hopefully those things can be worked out because like I said the concept is very cool.

I agree. not really much incentive at all to win.

I've noticed the economy for high end items really tightening up lately, all the purple items sell for hundreds or even thousands of gold now, and a lot of the good blue items sell for more than they used to. I think this will continue as more people develop higher level characters and need those nice items.

I agree about there being incentive to win though.

By the way, Loki posted on the forums that they have made a change to correct the dual wielding issue (where it was working too well.) I've already noticed my defensive guy doing a lot better against DWers.

Can you sell basic items when you are done with them? I haven't seen a way to sell my early stuff.

Peregrine
08-13-2007, 01:50 PM
Sure, go to the loadout screen and click on an item, at the bottom it will give you options to sell to vendor or go to the item details screen. On that screen you can sell to the vendor or you can sell to the marketplace, sometimes people are willing to pay more than the vendor, especially for good items.

I don't know if anyone else has done this but we went out for dinner and I just left my internet on with the Duels site open. When I got back I had 20 or so challenges waiting for me. (It's getting too boring to me so I leave it open for a bit after I challenge 50 or so players to a duel that are online at the time- or I do when the site isn't slower than pre-global warming glacier movement).

I just wish there was a way to clear out all the old duels. When I have 10-15 completed, I don't want to watch through them all.

I hardly watch any duels anymore, since your record updates as you get to the "view details of your battle screen" I just don't bother viewing it, and move on to the next fight.

Same here, the only time I watch fights is when I'm trying out new loadouts.

I don't know of any, but what I do is after challenging someone it returns you to their page. I'll then challenge someone they fought in their last 5 fights and just cycle through like that (keeping an eye on the green indicator showing they are still online). That keeps you from having to reload the battle list and cycle through it which for me takes forever.

I did the same thing when I went to bed last night. I woke up with 3 pages for duel requests. I'm going through them and cherry-picking the easy fights as I gain levels. Nice that I don't have to bother with requesting all of the duels.

One advantage of having a bad record is that you get challenged a lot more, which makes it easier to level.

I can't get it in my mind that having a bad record is OK. There is nothing wrong with a bad record since the goal seems to be to grow, but I can't get myself to sacrifice my record at the same time. Is it just me or does that sound really silly?

thealmighty

Don't worry too much about your record early on though, you will have the opportunity to wipe it clean.

I read this in the 'Help' file. Don't know at what point you can do this but no need, it seems, to worry about your record as you get going.

Brillig
08-14-2007, 03:04 PM
Meh. Personally, I think you *should* worry about your won loss record.

If you lose a lot of duels, then your opponents get stronger faster than you do. More xp, (which you can catch up on, admittedly), but also more gold, tokens and packs.

Since, in the long run, the goal is to be better than the others, doing things that advance your opponents faster than they advance you makes no sense.

Peregrine
08-14-2007, 03:48 PM
I agree that in the long run some things, especially gold, will accumulate a lot faster if you win. I don't mind losing, but I would never deliberately tank my character. I just have one long-term loser that I keep plowing away with, in the hope that he will be good one day.

Have the devs mentioned what their stance on multiple characters per person is?

I created a path of the sword character wanting to create a warrior type, but realized after looking into the talents some more that my character is more suited to be an assassin with his current spec.

Peregrine
08-14-2007, 04:51 PM
Well I have multiple characters, I don't think that's a problem. But you have to create separate accounts for each one.

Created a new character. He's on a tear.

Keeping his record a bit safe. I just skirmish the hell out of him.

Skirmishing is a great way to grab tokens and level up.

I created him at around 1:00 PM. 9 hours later.... he's only had 35 duels, but is already Level 10.

Has anyone put points into a high path yet? I was reading the game guide and had some questions.

"Anytime after Level 20, you can choose to specialize further. This is not required. When you choose a High Path, you do not lose your previous skills but you can no longer advance them." Does this mean once I choose increase high path skills I can no longer increase normal path skills?

"Requires: 5 Ranks of the Path of the Sword, Level 20" Does this mean that after 5 points into Path of the sword, I can save remaining points to use once I reach 20? For example to get to ambush faster than if I had spent points every level up to 20.

RendeR
08-15-2007, 01:31 AM
Yes, you can hoarde your skill points and use them all at the changeover to level 20+ skills. You'll need the minimums as you noted to be able to use something higher, but yes, you can end up with an ambush attack that is 9X normal if you do it right.

They're working on ideas to help control that a bit.

How do you trade items? Through the item selling system?

Peregrine
08-15-2007, 06:59 AM
Yeah the hoarding points and spending them only on level 20 skills is a major bug they're trying to fix. Fflix, I have points in the high path and you can definitely keep spending points in the lower path, so don't worry about that.

BrianD
08-15-2007, 08:14 AM
Aren't there skill point respec options in the game? Couldn't you get the same ambush result without hoarding?

Peregrine
08-15-2007, 09:46 AM
Yeah that's part of the same bug, people are respecing to get high level abilities way before they should be able to get them.

BrianD
08-15-2007, 11:29 AM
Hopefully that will all get balanced out eventually. I'm also hoping the improve the armor ratings in the game. I'd love to see an equally fair fight between someone who spends all their points on the weapon and someone who spends all their points on armor. Armor seems somewhat useful now, but it could be better.

Do the duel core and noble set packs contain different items? Or does the noble set just have the possibility for orange items and better percentages on the other colors?

Different items. If you go to the armory and look at a specific item group it will show them in 3 sections. First section, those you can buy from the vendor. Second section, those that come in the core packs. Third section, those that come in the noble packs.

Peregrine
08-15-2007, 01:26 PM
Yes the sets contain different items. The noble set generally contains more powerful items geared for higher levels. You can see all the different items when you go to the armory, for each type of weapon and armor you can scroll down to see what's in the core set and what's in the noble set for that equipment type.

Anyone still playing this game that has made it to/past level 20? I just got there but am unsure of what seems to be the way to go with high path stuff (I am sword path, btw).

Any advice or comments (I saved up some points so I have 5 to use at lvl 20)?
