Any impressions of the demo yet?

I played it this morning. It lasted about 20-30 minutes. Based on it, I will definitely buy the game when it comes out next week.

The atmosphere is creepy as hell. I sat through the whole thing gripped with anticipation. I would highly recommend not playing it when the kids are around.

It is pretty standard as shooters go so far. The part that grabs you is the setting and what little bit of the story you get.

Dola, I forgot to mention one thing.

After you finish the demo, there is a short video showing you more of what's to come. That alone is worth the download time and playing through the demo. I think this game is going to kick ass.

I might end up getting this for the PC, the hype has been so positive.

To demonstrate how closely I pay attention to non-sports games, I had gotten really excited about this demo coming up. Then I read spleen1015's post and thought to myself, "It's a shooter?" It was at that point that I realized the source of my confusion. I had mixed Bioshock up with Mass Effect. Ooooops.

Anyway, now that I'm clear on which game this is, I'll probably try the demo anyway. I'm not much for shooters, but as long as it doesn't make me dizzy, I'll probably rent it and play it for a while just because the graphics look so good.

I'm not a big graphics guy. I'm a gameplay first person, but the graphics for this game really add a lot to the experience.

My pick for game of the year, even before GTA slipped.

I know games like Mass Effect and Halo3 will challenge that assessment, but I think this game is going to really be amazing.

Debating on the demo for the same reason coop gave. No real need to try a game I'm buying day 1 regardless. In a sports sim that isn't a big deal. For a story based shooter, it could be.

I started mine at 12:45 am this morning and it was ready to go at 8am when I checked on it. :)

You don't get very far into the game during the demo. I don't think the experience will be spoiled by giving it a go. It ends at a very interesting place.

I am very much looking forward to playing this. WoW will definitely be taking back seat for the first time.

I read they tweaked the demo so it will be a little different than the opening of the game. Not sure how much that difference is though.

I started my download at about 10:30, and when I went to bed closer to 3, it was still going. Lots of people have had slowness.

It was done when I awoke, though.

Demo is amazing. Will be up for game of the year from many gaming sites. Anyone who doesn't totally hate FPS games will love this game. The atmosphere is amazing and the gameplay is gonna be very tough for the run&gun no-brain FPS'ers. So many options and the tension in the game is truly gripping. Average review score prediction: 9.6.

Hopefully the game can last 25 or more hours :)

I'm not a FPS fan, but I've enjoyed a select few of them over the years. Just reading all of the positive vibes from so many previews and people who have played the demo, I'll be getting this one (and will avoid any potential spoilers from the demo.)

My 14 year old son got creeped out right before getting into the elevator to head down into Rapture and stopped playing. The music and everything freaked him out before he even saw an enemy.

Yet, he's been playing the hell out of The Darkness this week. I don't get it.

I tried the demo after hearing some friends describe it as "more than just a standard FPS", but if FPS' give you motion sickness, its not for you. I got woozy after playing the demo for about 30 minutes, i've never been able to play FPS games for that reason, which kinda sucks b/c it looks prety damn cool.

They give me motion sickness as well, but usually it takes an hour. This loosk good enough that I'm just planning on playing it 30 minutes/day (which I hope is possible with the save system.) If not, I'll re-gift it to my friend.

Steam preloads games. So it installs a lot of the files, but you can't play it. It's just when the release day hits you can play pretty much immediately.

Wish I had a better PC for this sucker...or a TV for that matter, going to have to spend on one or the other. :)

The demo was simply amazing, and I'm not a big fan of FPS. Besides the incredible detail put into the environments, the sound is well done and really creepy. I jumped a few times while playing. It also seems to involve a lot more strategy than most FPS. I hacked one of those bots and it requires you completing a puzzle. It also seems like you have to really work the plasmids with your weapons to get the most out of it.

It will be interesting to see the sales figures from this game. My local gamestop had 7 guys in there buying this today when I went there during my lunch break. The sales clerk says they have sold over 150 copies and that was at 12:30. I probably won't get to play until Friday or Saturday.

I almost rented it today, but instead opted for college Hoops 2k7. I may pick it up later in the week. It's very hard for me to play any kind of M rated content, as I don't play in front of my kids. So the only time for me to play something like this would be after 10pm. At some point I'm sure I'll opt for the 24" Dell Widescreen, and move the XBox out of the family room.

Gamespot review is up:

http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/action/bioshock/review.html?sid=6176947

9.0 is the highest score they've given any game since they went to their new scoring mechanism which is supposed to be tougher to score well on. The good points:

Absolutely amazing atmosphere and visual design with the technical prowess to back it all up
Lots of character customization options to play around with
Great voice cast really sells the storyline.
The bad points:

Annoying hitches cause the game to freeze for a few seconds at a time, but it only seems to start happening after playing the game for several hours
Lack of death penalty keeps things fun, but also keeps things a little too easy.

My father-in-law just called to say that he is driving into town tonight. WOOT! This means that Mrs. Eaglesfan will want to do some extra cleaning tonight and I might get an hour or two in with the game after all.

I got to play for a little over 2 hours before my wife dragged me off of the 360. Splicing into a turret and leading enemies into its path of fire is incredibly fun. The atmosphere is just incredible, and I've found some of the quotes to be very interesting. The great sense of style combined with great gameplay is already readily apparent. I generally do not like FPS, and I've only finished 2 or 3 of them over the years, but I agree with Kingneb. It is clear to me already that this will be a finalist for game of the year and I wouldn't be surprised if it wins it. Best of all, in over 2 hours of play no motion sickness for me. :)

Good thing you picked up your own copy, Todd. I won't be gifting this one away ;)

System Shock 2 was an incredible game, one of my favorite of all time and the thing that tilted it from a very, very good FPS to a classic was the sound. It set the mood of the game. The other thing about it was the "ghost" scenes the game had.

You can tell this game is made by the same guys. It has the same things going for it. It's eerie seeing some of those ghost scenes play out and the tension in the game is fantastic.

I played for a couple of hours last night. It exceeded all of my already lofty expectations. GOTY candidate for sure.

Just to expound on the sound comments you guys have made. This is the first game that I feel really takes advantage of the surround sound setup I have.. It's very creepy hearing all of the noises coming from behind me and from all of the different speakers. College Hoops is the only other game I've played that I feel does a decent job of fully utilizing surround sound and this game blows it away. Gotta agree on the ghost scenes. They along with the diary recordings are very well done.

I will never, every forget one of the ghost scenes from SS2. It had a guy in front of a door who was weeping and emotional. He apologized to his kids and his wife, then stuck a gun to his head and. . .

You get the picture. I played SS2 in a darkened room with headphones and had chills go up my spine many, many times.

I'm not using the headphones, but I'm playing Bioshock the same way. Darkened room, very little outside noises. Can't wait til tonight when I can fire it up again.

Playing the game today, I had my first two jump out of my seat scared moments. Despite this being in the first 2 or 3 hours, I'll put it in spoiler tags:

I jumped worrying that I trapped myself in a room on fire when I first used ignite right after getting it and it spread into the room I was in. The second one was when I picked up the shotgun, I was all excited, until the lights went out and creepy noises started all over and suddenly I was being attacked on all sides.

I was looking at a cash register taking my sweet time as I look for telekenesis (which I found, yay!) and I turn around and BOOM! A splicer is right there quiet as can be and starts knocking the crap out of me... I seriously had chills run up and down my body. Lovin this game!

I got 31 achievements for 685 points on my first time through. I missed many points for not taking full advantage of the camera. I'll play it on hard the 2nd time through and make sure to take many many pictures with the camera.

in-between jobs? did you leave GameStop?

Yeah I did. Lackluster offered me a 20% bump in pay and a store 5 minutes from where I live, so I had to take it.

As for BioShock, the review scores are simply amazing for a single-player FPS. Though this is far from the typical shooter. Going to play it through a 2nd time on hard (played it on medium last time) and try not to run&gun so much. I need to take better advantage of the environment and not try to shotgun everyone. It's hard to switch to a strategic mentality after every other FPS game that involves using just your weapons and blowing stuff up.

HERE (http://www.sonydefenseforce.com/?p=83) is a rather scathing review. Sounds like we should all wait on the superior PS3 version.

In all seriousness though, I've only got to play for a few hours so far and I'm not generally a fan of shooters but this ranks up there as one of the best games I've ever played. Haven't seen a game with this kind of immersion in a long time. Just the attention to detail on it is amazing, nothing feels just tacked on. It's not generic shooter level after level, there's something to look at and interesting in every room and always sound..the sound really shines.

Anyway, unfortunately the room with the 360 on it has a Skylight, and Bioshock simply can't be played in light, so I'm having to kill time until it gets dark so I can fire it up. :)

ROFLMAO at that "review."

Absolutely agree about playing in the light. Fortunately, my media room where the 360 is has special curtains that I can pull and create a near perfect blackout. Unless motion sickness sets in (which it hasn't yet in 2 2 hour sessions) I'll be playing this one most of the weekend :)

I picked the PC version up today, played for two or three hours. Not much to be said that hasn't been said already, but this game rocks so far. Love the art style, the graphics are beautiful, can't wait to see what kinds of new weapons and plasmids are yet to come. I just need to improve my keyboard/mouse skill, I rarely play FPS. Thankfully I haven't really been bombarded with enemies yet.

I got spooked real good in the dentist office

I was in the part with the dentist chair and the smoke (gas?) in the room. When you first enter, the smoke blinds you and when it clears there is suddenly a corpse in the dentist chair that wasn't there before. For some reason that really weirded me out as it was. But as you continue in the room it happens again, only this time when it clears and you turn there is a splicer standing there right in your face. Holy crap that scared me. Honestly, I know the expression getting goosebumps, but I don't think that I had ever gotten them before from being scared. After I killed the splicer I looked down and all the hair on my arms and legs was standing straight up.

I normally don't like FPS games too much or horror stuff but I love this game. After putting two and two together I know why, I have enjoyed the other games these people have made as well. They sure know what they are doing.

Classy review up there. 5/10? Never visited that website anyway, I'll now go out of my way to avoid it. On the all time gamerankings.com list, it's now the 4th ranked game of all time per review scores. This is one shooter I will replay. I'm going to play through the game in a couple of different ways at least, maybe more.

I played the PC demo last night. I don't think it was long enough for me to get a feeling for the game. And considering I rarely play through games, no matter how good they are... I'll have to pass on getting this game right now. But maybe somewhere down the road i will.

We might be at the same point in the game. Just got the key to the security booth or whatever, completed my goal, then the guy on radio told me to go after the second little sister after I had taken down the unaccompanied one.

I don't think I have enough ammo to take it down, though supposedly there are other methods to defeating the Big Daddies that will require some thinking and creativity. When you encounter one of those things they just look so damn imposing, I love their design even if it scares me when I suddenly find myself in the same room as one of them.

I hope I didn't screw up by removing my electric shock power for telekenesis. Maybe I should have given up the fireball instead.

I just read some forums, and now I see what the problem with widescreen is. And that does suck that they did it that way (basically the widescreen is chopping off the top and bottom of a 4:3 screen and zooming the rest of it in).

Then there is the lingering question of the rumored PS3 version of BioShock found in the PC code. Stupid question here. . . how would he know Bioshock was better than Halo 3? There has been a Halo 3 beta, but the full game hasn't been released. No demo of the single player game has been released. The game hasn't even gone gold yet. But he believes Bioshock is the better game?

Are you the same person who chastised review sites for jumping the gun?

Let's just concentrate on what we know for sure: Bioshock is the single best FPS shooter released for the next gen systems. I'd say it wasn't close, but Resistence is one heck of a game too. I don't think it's in the same league as Bioshock, but that's opinion, nothing more.

Bioshock and Halo fill different roles anyway. Halo 3 will likely have a solid single player experience, but will almost certainly shine in multiplayer. Bioshock shines as an FPS single player experience. And Mass Effect will cater to the RPG fan.

"Sony (the owner of SecureROM copy protection) is still up to its old tricks. One would think that they would have learned their lesson after the music CD DRM fiasco, which cost them millions. However, they have now started infesting PC gaming with their invasive DRM. Facts have surfaced that show that the recently released PC game BioShock installs a rootkit, which embeds itself into Explorer, as part of its SecureROM copy-protection scheme. Not only that, but just installing the demo infects your system with the rootkit. This begs the question: Since when did demos need copy protection?"

Can you go back to areas you've previously left later in the game?

I'll put the specifics of my question in a spoiler tag. It deals with the medical pavillion area:

When I got my 3rd plasmid, Telekinesis, I swapped out the Incinerate. Now, there is an ice blocked door on the medical pavillion that I can't get through. Not very good forethought on my part. I've just beat Dr. Steinman and I was hoping he would have a gene bank so that I could re-equip Incinerate, but no luck. So, is there a way to go back to medical pavillion once I open the emergency access? Also, is there a gene bank that I'm missing on the medical pavillion level (I think I've been everywhere on the level except through the icy door and two other doors that won't open for me.

Outside of a game of Civ 4 when I first got it, I haven't had a game make 8 hours fly by faster in a very long time. Maybe, I'm just a very slow player, but I don't think I'm anywhere near done and I've now played about 12 hours. I've had a few reloads from my fights with Big Daddy's, as I don't want to use the Vita Chambers, so maybe I've actually only played about 10-11 hours of game time. The first one took me about 20 reloads, and cost me all my cash in reloads on health at a machine. They've gotten a TAD easier, but not a lot. They are a horrible lot to deal with.

I love the save mechanism of the game. I'm playing it just like you EF27, I reload my own saves. But it gives another replay option. Maybe next time I'm going to just play through it with the in game saves only for more of a challenge, even on medium.

First, I didn't realize that I should have been running towards the sub right away as the mobs just seemed to keep regenerating, but once I did that, running down the corridor and seeing the sub blow up shocked me. EF27,

The similarities are all over the place. The way you level your character up, the chips/sodas/beer/cigs for health, the ghostly images, the messages and how you receive them, etc. I'd say the only thing Bioshock lacks is the eery, eery voice of the baddie in SS2. It's a female voice that echos through the halls of abandoned spaceships. There are some mean monkies in the game that howl. I've never been as scared playing a video game as I was in SS2. The game is always stuttering, hitching up, or
pausing. It started happening for me yesterday. It's really annoying
and I'm not the only one that this has happened to (a lot of people
are complaining on 2K's official boards). Apparently my only option
until it's fixed/patched is if I get a memory card unit and play w/o
the hard drive attached (which I'm not gonna do because I don't feel
like paying $40 or whatever it costs for a MCU).

I think the bug is caused by the game wanting to load too many
textures and objects for some people. How it gets to that point is
beyond me.

Yup, he said he's tried that. It might just be a rare bug in the game I guess.

Definitely play SS2. Still a great game today, and do a search for high res textures for System Shock 2, as there's some out there and they help beef the graphics up a good amount. Obviously it's still outdated but definitely playable. On a pure creepiness level I think SS2 blows Bioshock away, but Bioshock improves or holds it own in every other regard(and there's no shotguns falling to pieces after 5 shots, damn you weapon degradation!)

I would agree. The atmosphere in SS2 is better than Bioshock. Everything else, it's Bioshock.

The weapons degragation was frustrating as all get out. Agree 100% there.

Into Area 4 now.

I agree.
Anyone remember the feeling when you rounded that corner and stopped because you heard the "nurses" for the first time?

God, that game rocked.

I call a game great when you have to actually stop and go do something else because your nerves are on edge. The SS series did that for me as did the Thief series. Looking Glass studios were responsible for both, if I remember correctly. Dream team. RIP Looking Glass.

MikeVic: They all say that the first time.

I just took out a Big Daddy without even getting touched! I didn't run or hide in a nook either. I'm at the point in the game where I think I have every weapon and I used the RB to switch through several of them in the brief fight.

I used 3 proximity mines down a long corridor equally spread out. I used armor piercing pistol rounds from a distance to hit him 6 times quick. Then, I switched to a quick burst of machine gun armor piercing rounds. By this point, he had tripped two of the 3 mines and was hurt bad but was about to hit me (he was the charging variety.) So, then I switched to the chemical thrower with electric gel and buzzed him up close which took damage and paralyzed him and he was quickly dead! I've used so many first aid kits while fighting those guys, it was nice to take one down so cleanly. :)

I have a question about two small areas that I haven't been able to access yet that are annoying me. If you are past the Hephaestus area, the spoiler shouldn't give anything away:

In the area where I had to kill the 4 people to take their pictures and put on the masterpiece, I noticed there was an area I couldn't get to. There was a spiraling sculpture, but I couldn't figure out how to jump from piece to piece to get up there. Do you have to make all of those jumps to get up there, or do you eventually get a plasmid that allows you to fly, or is there another way up to that area? Also, in Hephaestus, there is a recorder and some objects under the stairs near Kyburz's offices and the upper workshops. I thought that the area might become accessible when I redirect the magma, but no luck. I've looked all over for crawlspaces and I can't find an access point. Can anyone either PM me or post in this thread the answers. Thanks in advance.

So has anyone run across a bug that my friend has right now?

I started to have this happen last night. The game would freeze for a few seconds every few minutes. I solved it by clearing the cache holding down the LB and RB when the game loads.

I finished the game last night. I'll be writing a review today or tomorrow. It'll be the first game to ever get a perfect score from me.

I'll put this as simply as I can: This is the single best game I've ever played. If you like FPS, get this game. I don't care if you get it for the PC or the 360. Just get it.

I'm deciding what to play tonight. . . Metroid or this one again in a different way. I think I'll play Metroid, but this game will never, ever be out of my rotation of games. This is what gaming is all about.

I'm near the very end of the game and I have to agree with Troy, except I would say even if you usually don't like shooters, try this game out. It's that good. It's definitely among my top games of all time. The story line, the gameplay, and the atmosphere combine to create a truly great game. I'll be starting this again as soon as I can, this time trying to be evil.

I noticed the demo has an "easy" setting. Since I don't really play shooters and am more interested in the story/atmosphere, would that be a decent option if I bought the game? Or does "easy" remove certain areas and/or storyline possibilities from the game?

Eaglesfan27

I'm not sure Maple Leafs. However, I just beat it on medium (normal) and I think I missed an area or at least one secret area. I'm not good at shooters, but except for a few of the Big Daddy's and the final fight, I didn't have much trouble at all and that was with a house rule for myself that I wouldn't use the resurrection chambers.

Normally in shooters, "easy" would mean fewer monsters to fight, monsters and bosses have less health and hurt less, you'll find more health/ammo/powerups, etc. Can't say for sure with this game since I haven't played it, but that's generally how difficulty levels work for shooters.

I think it's like sab said. You'll still get the full storyline, it'll just be easier to beat.

It is well worth playing this game for the storyline alone BTW.

I'd recommend playing on Normal, the game doesn't really punish you for dying multiple times and ammo isn't too hard to come by.

I hardly ever play shooters and Normal isn't giving me much trouble, sometimes a little bit of thought can help as much as eliteness keyboard/mouse skills (or gamepad if you're considering the 360 version) when fighting enemies in this game anyhow.

But yeah, the game is more about the story than the level of difficultly. Try the demo and see what you like.

I'm going very slow and put in some more time with it this weekend. I'm still amazed at all the detail in this game.

With all the garbage talk of sports games and what not that seems to be the mainstream of conversation nowdays, it's refreshing to get away to something this great and forget about sliders and what's realistic and what's not.

I'm really loving the game, I just entered the Arcadia part and am having a blast. One thing I really like is how they space out the upgrade options, finding out you can upgrade your weapons was neat, and I still have the invention system to look forward to.

FYI to 360 owners of Bioshock. DO NOT download the patch that was released today. Major framerate issues have cropped up with the patch. This post on Loot Ninja gives info on how to unapply the patch if you have already installed it.

I got the game last night. When I loaded it up for the first time, I DLed a patch. Is that the patch referenced here?

You say the patch was released today. Are you sure about that? If so, I'm okay because it would be a different patch than the one I applied last night.

I honestly plead ignorance on this. I just saw it on Loot Ninja and noticed no one had given a heads-up yet. Even if it is the same one, people are reporting that the fix Loot Ninja gave works well. Or you can just wait a couple of days and they'll likely have a fix for the fix out.

Thanks to a night of insomnia and a sick day @ work I just completed the game.

Really impressed with what the developers have pulled off with Bioshock. An incredible hybrid game that is almost perfect. Bioshock had me thinking about the game even when I wasn't playing, to the point where I had dreams influenced by events in the game.

I played through as a "good guy" on easy and felt like I didn't miss anything. I'll be playing evil and normal mode next time around to see how things turn out.

I finally bought the game (PC of course), and have been blown away.

The only problem is that the sounds fucking scare the shit out of me, but in this game, the sounds are an absolute must if you want to stay alive. Usually, I mute games like this and use subtitles, unless there's a big cut-scene type thing about to happen. What's worse, is that I have to play the game with my earphones on because I don't want my wife and daughter to have to hear any of it, so it's like right in my head.

Does it ever get less freaky, or am I in for a long, jumpy road?

finally finished the game. i loved the early 20th century art deco style theme. The developers absolutely succeeded in creating a unique atmosphere. The ending came pretty abruptly though: when the final cutscene ended, i was surprised that there wasn't another level to play.
