I always hated the Yankees, but Phil was always a joy to listen to on WPIX with Bill White.

So long, Scooter, and thanks :(

You should put the phrase "Holy Cow!" in the thread title. Or maybe a reference to The Money Store :)

+1

growing up in NJ my mom was a Yankees fan. Phil's voice was the first voice I ever identified baseball with.

I actually had the pleasure of meeting him once at a TGI Fridays in West Orange NJ. He was nice enough to take the time to pose for pictures and talk to everyone. Even though he was just there to use the bathroom!

Ok, here we go, we've got a real pressure cooker here; two down, nobody on, no score, bottom of the ninth.

that sucks. im a huge mets fan but i will always remember watching rizzuto and the yanks since i would spend every summer with my grandfather who is a diehard yankees fan.

curious though, im not a numbers kind of guy when it comes to baseball, but thats about all i can go on since i wasn't around back in 1950. judging by the numbers, how did he win the MVP in 1950 with .324 BA, 7 HR and 66 RBI, and 12 SB (caught 8 times)?

I don't think anyone knows. It probably should have been either Larry Doby or Joe Dimaggio (who finished 8th and 9th in the voting that  ), but somehow Rizzuto won out.

Nevertheless, RIP Scooter :(

Actually, he had the most Win Shares in the league that year. Bill James makes sure to mention that in his new Historical Baseball Abstract.

But this news really sucks. What a great Yankee.
