View Full Version : Windows Error - IP Address Conflict

Starting today, my home computer is getting this error every few minutes and my internet won't work after it occurs. If I go to the network connections and "repair" the local network connection, then the internet starts working for a few minutes before the error pops up again and everything stops working. Anyone have any ideas what is causing this and more importantly how to make it stop happening?

open a command prompt and type:
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

I believe that is what "repair" does.
Do you have a local network? If so, is it wireless? If so, is it secured?

I got another IP address error, did a repair and that led to the multiple postings which I'm now deleting..

Interesting, deleting one post deleted them all. Anyway, yes, I have a local network that is wireless. It is secured via WPA. The computer in question is connected via a CAT cable to the router.

Are you assigning addresses yourself or are you using DHCP?

The first thing I would do is check the router to see if there is another machine listed with the same IP address..

I'm using DHCP, and I've checked the clients list on there (first thing I did before posting on here) and it only lists the computer..
I thought a repair did the ipconfig release/renew as well, but since I've done that via the command prompt, the error hasn't reoccurred. However, sometimes it took a bit longer than other to reappear after I did a "repair."

Dola -
It just happened again. It seems to be happening about 5 minutes after each repair. I've never seen anything like this before and nothing has changed in the last day or two.
Edit: Actually, it just happened within a minute of the last repair as I was trying to post this.

Manually give yourself another IP address that's not in use. Just for troubleshooting purposes.

Ok, trying that now.

Since, I went with the manual IP Address, I've gone 20 plus minutes with no errors and no problems connecting to the internet.

Check your DHCP list again - see if you "still" see the old IP - could be that someone's trying to spoof your machine to get on the wireless.

Good idea, but there is nothing there at the moment.

Are there any other computers or any printers setup by ip? Someone could also statically set their system to match your computer IP address. Though not likely, I don't know why they would and it's not terribly easy to crack WPA (unless I missed the bulletin).

I had this happen not too long ago where my 360 had something else's IP. Rebooted the router / hub / switch, problem went away.
If you have not reset the router that hands out IPs yet, do so.

I reset the router before I posted this thread initially and that didn't solve the problem. I decided to go back to my DHCP a few minutes ago, and the problem hasn't happened again. I don't have any other printers setup by the IP, but I have several computers on the network, but none of them were on at the time of the problem and the 360 wasn't either. The only things that were on were the HR20's that I hooked up to my network. Maybe they were causing the problem, somehow? Also, I don't see anyone wanting to go to the trouble of cracking our WPA. Both of our neighbors have their own wireless nets and I haven't pissed them off so I don't see why they would want to mess with mine.
