View Full Version : I Will Never Mock Those With "OBX" Stickers On Their Cars Again

Ever since I moved to D.C., I've seen those "OBX" stickers on cars.
I confess, I used to think "What's the big deal about the Outer Banks?"
Well now I know. I'm not even a big beach person, but this place is wonderful. I do have to say I'm amazed at the number of people from New York, New Jersey, and even Massachusetts that are down here. I talked to a couple yesterday who drove ten hours to get here. That's kinda crazy, but I guess it's a helluva lot cheaper than the Jersey shore.
I'm still not sure if I'm going to put one of those stickers on my car, but my wife has already informed me that we will be coming back next year... and I'm absolutely fine with that.
One question for those who've been down here before: based on the Saturday traffic we ran into coming down, we're debating about heading back on Friday night instead of Saturday morning. Does anybody know what the northbound traffic is usually like Friday evening?

When I was in Iowa, our next door neighbors, who had previously lived in NC, took an annual road trip to the Outer Banks. It is crazy the draw that it has.
I really like that most of the beaches (outside of Nagshead) aren't too crowded and you can get a big house for relatively cheap (assuming you have enough people to fill it). I haven't been in about 6 years, but I'm planning on going there next summer.

Saturday traffic is a bitch all the way from south of richmond upward. Definitely not recommended to the faint of heart.

I know someone who left for the Outer Banks from Detroit on Saturday. I think he might have had family in the area, though. I'd never heard of it until he told me he was going.

Cool, thanks fellas.
We're in Corolla, and we really like it. If you're single, it's probably not the best place to go (the beaches are full of families, meaning your first thought when you see a good looking girl is "Wow!" Your second thought is "She's probably not legal... better check out the grandma in the mu-mu."
But the beaches aren't crowded at all, the surf is good, there are plenty of shops and restaurants, and as was mentioned previously... it's pretty darn affordable, especially this week (which is not technically "in season").

It's just like the Inner Banks but on the outside.

THe outer banks is the far out coastal region of virginia and north and south carolina where the atlantic has basically created giant sand bar land masses that are an amazing place to vacation, relax and enjoy some peace and quiet. The sunrises are gorgious and the general feel of being on the coast is simply dreamy.
Just don't be there during a storm of ANY kind. Let alone the annual hurricanes.
There is little to know high growth to slow the winds down on most of the OBX areas. So the wind is a constant.
haven't been out there in over a decade, might have to drag the wife down for a week sometime.

Hey, I have one of those OBX stickers on my Pathfinder. :D
We were just down there as well, Cam (Aug 11-18). We were stuck in bridge traffic Saturday in-bound, but it couldn't be helped because of the house rental and our long drive from STL. The Friday thing is great if you can find a rental home you like with Friday/Friday in/out days. We did fine outbound by leaving early on Saturday morning and getting the jump on the check-out time crowd (typically 10:00 a.m.).

I spent two Fall Breaks on the Outer Banks (staying beachside just south of Nags Head). It wasn't the summer but hanging around the kite shops and eating shrimp when there's very little traffic (and people) was very cool.

OBX never did it for me--mostly I'm familiar with the area from Corolla to Kill Devil Hills. Clearly I'm missing something, because everyone else seems to love it there.
The beaches are nice and I like kayaking on the Albemarle Sound, but the OBX is incredibly overbuilt. The beach houses are lined up about eight deep, packed together like shacks in a third-world shanty town. Unless you have a place right on the beach, you're stuck staring at dozens of beach houses that look just like the one you're in. Getting there is brutal during the summer on account of the traffic.
Those bumper stickers do something to people's minds, I tell you.

I'm headed down to Hatteras Island with my wife and daughter on Saturday. I've been looking forward to it for months.
We usually try to get a Sunday to Sunday rental to avoid the traffic mess. But we ended up with a Sat-Sat rental this year, so we will be driving with the masses.
If you can believe it, the traffic was even worse before they made the road improvements in southern VA and northern NC. But I always found that if you can get yourself out of bed at the crack of dawn, you can beat most of the bad traffic. Friday night is an option, too, but I prefer the morning rollout.
The last time I was stuck in really bad traffic headed out to the OBX, a truck going the other way lost its spare tire, which started rolling down the highway at about 60 MPH. The tire headed toward the median and bounced in the air about 20-30 feet. It felt like it was happening in slow motion. Since traffic on my side was bumper-to-bumper and the tire was clearly going to land on the roadway, odds were pretty good that I was just about to see someone(s) die. Fortunately (?) it hit a minivan in the hood. It hit so hard it knocked most of the engine out. But since the van wasn't moving, I don't think anyone was hurt.
Watch for flying tires.

I was in corolla on the last week of June, we left on saturday morning at 9:00 a.m., we got back to Cleveland at Midnight, though it was peak season, I would leave earlier than 9 if you decide to go on Saturday.
And yes it's my favorite place I've ever been.

We've decided we're leaving around 9 p.m. tomorrow night, which will put us home around 2 a.m. My wife has volunteered to get up with the kids on Saturday morning (God bless her).

I dunno, I like the Outer Banks and all (would even go so far as to say I "love" it there), but I've always found those stickers to be kind of...stupid.
Then again I think most bumper stickers/window stickers are kind of stupid.
And I thought I was seeing a lot of OBX stickers in Maryland, it's nothing compared to the number of them I see in northern Virginia. It's somewhat disturbing, really.
