View Full Version : I have $30 to spend... which text sim do I buy?

Despite my activity in FOFC, I have actually been out of the loop of playing sports text sims. The only commercial sims I actually have are TEW, FBB, and a very, very, very old FOF2. :)
Opinions?

I had numerous technical problems with BBCF that completely killed my enjoyment of the game, but others seem to have not had the same trouble.
I still play TCY to this day. Despite all the complaints they get, I still think TCY and FOF2k7 are the two best text sims out there.

Its always safest to have multiple copies of FM in case you lose one or more of them in freak dishwasher related incidents ...

To be honest I think a lot depends on what your favourite sports are - that has to be at least a biasing factor.

I seem to remember a while ago that BBCF had some problems with polls being a little out of wack. Has that been cleared up with the latest patches? I've tried the demo a couple times and it's never grabbed me. I think part of that is probably not wanting to get too attached to a one year demo. With college football around the corner, I could see getting into it if it's pretty well fixed up though.
bbcf is an...interesting gaming experience. fbcb blows away all the sports sims out there to this day. I'd put ootp second on the list.

I know this question wasn't directed at me, but I feel I can answer it. It depends on your level of immersion. I can't speak for FOFC-BBCF...but, I can say for GG...we're doing recruiting for the 2011 season right now, and between that and the radio shows that I do with Cooley (last night's show was three hours long, tonight will be around 90 minutes)...I'd say 10-15 hours a week is spent on my end on the league.

Same with me and FM. Although for me, BBCF is all about multiplayer (just like FOF). It's crazy how much I used to play FOF solo before MP, and now I don't at all.

Exactly like me, i haven't played even one full solo season in FOF2k7 (i did a lot with 2k4). About BBCF i love it both solo and MP, but specially the later is awesome, nothing beats fighting for recruits with human players. Also i think that BBCF gameplanning and statistical analisys is way better suited for MP than FOF2k7 is.

TCY is a wonderful game, and I enjoyed playing it for many hours. I will definitely purchase TCY2 if it is released. The game is the developer’s vision of a college football simulation, not an NCAA football simulation. There is a higher than real life emphasis on academics and player happiness (including whether or not they have girlfriends). Once you accept the premise of the game, it is enjoyable and challenging. There is no customization available. You’re stuck with existing conference and bowl alignments, along with the ficticious “Solecismic 8” conference. The bowl tie-ins are fixed and unable to be edited.
BBCF is an NCAA football simulation, and I actually feel like I’m participating in a close to real life college football experience. The recruiting strikes a near perfect balance of location, prestige, playing time, chance to win, style of play, and coaching. The high schools are weighted with prestige values, and you’ll see a fairly realistic dispersal of talent. When you look at the players’ home towns on the teams’ rosters, they’ll look very similar to the way they look in real life. The conferences and bowls are editable. In my single player career, I have all of the 31 bowls (including such obscure bowls as the New Mexico Bowl and the International Bowl) and conference tie-ins set, and I use the BCS rotation. In the online leagues that I’m in, one uses a 16 team playoff format, and the other one uses an “old school” bowl alliance (no BCS) with a mythical national champion determined by the final polls.
Both of the games are excellent, but I prefer BBCF because it comes much closer to capturing the realism of college football.

I now have some money to spend. Possibly on two games if I'm feeling frisky.
Here are the games I have in mind:
OOTP - Played up till the split to SI. No real reason to stop. I just felt the need to move on. Been really having the OOTP itch lately though. Really enjoyed the game before the move to SI.
BBCF - Have played the demo. Really enjoyed it. What's the current on MP leagues. What are the "big" ones, the ones with a lot of interactivity, the ones that really immerse you. You know.. The perfect leagues :) How many of those are there? And can I have Ohio State.... :)
FM/WWSM - Same exact game? Is there any reason that FM is better to have outside of some terminology? FM 2008 is out, I see. Is WWSM updated?
BBCB - I have TCB. Really Really enjoyed it. How much better is BBCB?
4 games listed. Only can buy two. Help :D MLB, College Football, and College Basketball, really not one is a bigger favorite then the other, so its not like I'm a major baseball fan, but just kind of like football. So thats not really going to be an influence.
I have never really followed soccer. Every once in awhile I will try and follow English soccer or something, but I never know when the seasons start, and the cups and all that, so I just lose interest. I love world cup soccer. So, while I'm not the hugest soccer fan, I definitely always hear about how great FM is.

It is a very well-run league. It's easily the most active league I've ever seen. We just opened the Hall of Fame, and the history section (http://www.tswvault.net/ggvault.php) is taking shape (though much work is still needed done).
Hopefully some people go and check that out, and sign up. There's also a fictional MP league at TSW, the ACFA. That site is www.theacfa.net .

I would *definitely* choose BBCF on that list. As I've said in other (and recent) posts, I've never had more fun in a league than in Gridiron Glory. It is the biggest league on the net; unfortunately, no teams are open right now.
But the immersion level, with all of the articles written, the radio shows, and the coming history section (and if we get the Wikipedia fixed), is at a level I haven't seen in a very long time, if ever.
I also know that cartman's league, and st. cronin's league, with the old-school setup, are fantastic. I wish I had time to join those leagues.
Also, as I said in the previous post, there is a fictional league using BBCF, which is hosted at TSW. That league is at www.theacfa.net (http://www.theacfa.net), and has about 70 active coaches.
(I'm also holding out hope for BBPF, which would integrate classes from BBCF, to be released this summer. That would add the immersion for BBCF. We already have three pro football leagues filled up and ready to go for when that game is released.)
In any event, I don't see how you can go wrong with BBCF.
With the fun i'm having in the FOFC-BBCF league, and seeing how good looks the Girindon Glory, i'm going to apply now fo the waiting list.

The main problems from DDSCB were for Vista owners (as with all the text sims), who reported some CTD's, but i never had one myself in WinXP SP2. the duplicate recruiting class bugs has also been reported in DDSCB but only by customers who had a crash before during that game. As i never had a crash, i never saw the duplicated pool myself either.
Here is Gary's answer to that bug:
My guess is that if you get a freeze/crash something in the code gets hung up and when it goes to generate the recruits it simply duplicates them from last time. Again, the only common denominator in this error seems to be that the season crashed at some point - I don't know if its a crash period or a crash during a specific part of a season - just that its a crash. I'll try and build in some kind of workaround to this for 1.0.7 though until we find the source

I've never had more fun in a league than in Gridiron Glory. It is the biggest league on the net; unfortunately, no teams are open right now.
Maybe he'll be fortunate enough to be put on the GG waiting list. Back in December, I followed the e-mail instructions to be put on the waiting list, and I even followed up with a PM on the GG board, but I was never replied to.

Serious question....what better dds:cb or fbcb?
As I am getting a lot of crashes from DDS:TCB and the pro basketball version of the game, along with a couple silly bugs I have since went back to FBCB.
I think DDSCB could be a great game but I get sick of spending 2 hours recruiting only to have a crash. I also like watching games more on FBCB and find the stats are MUCH more realistic. The only downfall for me in FBCB is the recruiting not being real deep.
The engine on DDSCB seems flawed for some reason, I see too many lopsided games. I seldom was seeing game decided by less than 5 points which is not the case in FBCB.

I was looking at the FOFC-BBCF league. I am getting BBCF for sure. I was browsing the forum over there and saw the thread for teams avail., but it is a couple weeks old. Are there any updates to it, or is it still the same.
Such as:
Penn State
Georgia
Oregon
Maryland
Thanks.

Off the top of my head, I think in the FOFC-BBCF, bsak currently runs Penn St and Skydog controls Georgia. I don't believe there is a current Oregon or Maryland manager.

It's a really good time to join both FOFC-BBCF and BB-BBCF, since both are in the offseason -- although, FOFC-BBCF is almost done with recruiting at this point, and if you joined BB-BBCF now, you can get in right before recruiting starts.

Indeed. Gridiron Glory has all 119 teams filled by human coaches, with a waiting list. We're entering our ninth season, and I've never had a better online league gaming experience.
I was on the waiting list, and I was just selected to be the new head coach of the New Mexico State Aggies. I've got to say, I've never seen anything quite like this in an online league. All 119 schools are human coached (no AI controlled teams), and there's a waiting list to get in. The immersion and overall participation from the members is unreal.

Fookin' Aggies. I wish you zero luck, VV. Especially against your big rival... ;)

Well, that would be the "Battle of I-25" for the Maloof Trophy against New Mexico. Of course, we do have the big "Battle of I-10" with UTEP for the Silver Spade and the Brass Spittoon. :)

BBCF is a great sim. I was in Cartman's league for a few seasons and enjoyed it a lot, but found it difficult to commit to 3 sims a week with my schedule, which really hurt in recruiting. Single player it's a solid game too, though I haven't fired it up in awhile (blame lies with CH2K8 for that).
Basketball-wise, it's still FBCB for me, though I will give Gary's titles a solid run-through at some point. It's been awhile.
It's a shame that Brian's new pro basketball title has been suspended.

I had to cut back, and I now manage three teams: Oklahoma in the bb-bbcf, North Carolina State in the fofc-bbcf and New Mexico State in Gridiron Glory. This is a good mix, because I've got a top tier prestige team with Oklahoma, a middle of the road team with N. C. State, and a low prestige team with New Mexico State. The challenges and strategies are different with each scenario.

Unclear. Everyone knows Brian's had problems, but Arlie said he's fine and that Brian's "current schedule isn't conducive to providing updates," whatever that means.
Brian is the most underrated and, I believe, best text sports sim programmer in the business. I was really hoping that affiliating with a company would provide the kind of structure to get him through any rough patches and get a product out. I do hope he is, indeed, doing okay.
Nevertheless, I've been jonesing badly for a good NBA sim to play, but DDS:PB appears to still be riddled with crashes, so this has been a big disappointment.

Lloyd-try the demo. Most crash issues are Vista related and there is little to nothing Gary can do about those except what he is doing now which is switch to VB.net '08 and make DDSPF.

Tim -- see, that was the problem. I did try the demo (as far as I know the most recent demo -- 1.4.2 or something like that?). It crashed eight picks into the first draft, right off the bat. And I'm working off XP. The only mod I had added to it was the NBA logos, so to have it crash that quickly kind of just helped confirm what I'd read about it.
Gary is an outstanding programmer, but it seems to me that he was never quite able to straighten this XP/Vista switchover mess out, at least where this release was concerned. I'm sure his next effort will be a good one, but right now I'm going stir crazy with no pro basketball option.

I believe the demo is up to 1.50. We have many customers without issues so I would love for you to d/l the latest demo without mods and if you hit any issues to post them at Wolverine.

I'm pretty sure I was using the most recent demo (from what I can tell it goes all the way back to 08/07/2007, according to the downloads page), but maybe I'll go back and give it another shot sometime. It's just that when a DEMO crashes you don't really have the same motivation to tackle the issue as when you've actually shelled out money for the product...
