Here's one for all you anal people out there. A game of Scrabble ends when one person runs out of tiles. BUT -- if the player who goes first is the one to run out of tiles, should play continue until everyone has had the same number of turns?

you lost, face it
once all the tiles have been drawn as soon as one player uses all their tiles that's it.

Actually, either way, I ended up winning -- I think this debate only affected who took places 2-4.
My thinking was the same as yours -- but then I usually look to the rules. I forget what they said now, but they seemed a bit vague on this issue.

That version of the rules seems clearer than what I remember reading. Granted, this was many months ago.

The game ends when all letters have been drawn and one player uses his or her last letter; or when all possible plays have been made.

thank you, professor.
More than 2 players in scrabble is just a bastardization anyway. When you play with 2 it works out fine. Yes someone may get one more turn than the other guy, but that is part of what you calculate when you are in the end game.

I can see that. Playing Scrabble with more than 2 people, the person who really wants to win chooses a seat at the table after everyone else has.

Yes. The only true way to determine who is better is head-to-head.

Who cares, if you didn't win you are a loser. So it don't matter what place you are in, if you aren't in 1st!

PRAISE THE BABY JESUS!
I used to play scrabble quite competitively. It does not suck.

Same here. Wasn't there an Internet Scrabble server or something that rated players? Kinda like FIBS for backgammon?
That reminds me to get back into playing backgammon on FIBS...

a friend and I actually programmed a scrabble server and client. He did the server in java and I did the client in VB. It worked pretty well but we both kind of realized our hearts weren't in it anymore and stopped it.

That's the one I was thinking of.
And, smurfo, I only play rock/paper/scissors for money on ULTIMATEBET.COM!

After the first person goes out, aren't the remaining tiles subtracted from the other peoples' scores and added to the winner?
So like if I go out with 167 points, my sister has a Q and I left (11 points), and my mom has a J left (8 points), I get 19 points added to my score, my sister gets 11 subtracted, and my mom gets 8 subtracted.
That's how we play anyway. And we play for blood.

That's how I've always played.
yes you lose the points for your tiles and the winner gains them. in 2 player games the one that is caught with tiles usually just loses 2x their total to simplify things and keep the higher score more pure for records and stuff.

Right -- I'm not disputing that part. It's definitely part of the game. The question was -- when does that happen?
I've been informed that the version of the rules I was reading said pretty much the same thing as smurfie's link. Maybe I was just feeling gracious toward the complainer, since I knew I was going to win either way. Or maybe I was thinking that there's no harm in finishing the round. I'm usually a rules stickler, but this seems more fair -- maybe it was also that I was feeling I had won unfairly, since I went first.
There are many other things that unbalance the game in a 4 player bastardization of Scrabble. I certainly wouldn't worry much about that one. The fact that given 2 reasonably skilled players, 1 marginally competent one, and 1 horrible clueless player, the winner will be determined most of the time by who is to the left of the horrible player is enough to make the game itself a joke when played by 4.

Ah. Well, we always play that as soon as one goes out, it's done. There is no final play-around to ensure equal number of turns.

Because Scrabble F'n Rules! SUCK ON THAT, MONOPOLAH!
I dont see it so much as a debate but as making the OP feel better about being a stickler for the rules in the future.

Same. Except for the play for blood. I can't find anyone who wants to play more than a casual game or two :(
You know the rule that really gets me about scrabble is that the center tile is a 2X to start so you're giving the person who lucks into the first move a big advantage.
