View Full Version : It's all in who you know (MNF announcers)

Mike and Mike are awful and Ditka, meh. I don't mind their morning show and I enjoy their insight but this is so bad. They sound like a televised high school game or, at best, a small college.
I feel bad for aspiring commentators who deserve a shot. It's sad when this happens and it happens more than it should.

Notice how the volume of the announcers is very low? It's like espn is trying to hide them. (or maybe their 'talk-show' vocals aren't suited for the louder vocals required for MNF...?) I wonder how much better it would be if their volume issues were fixed.
Another thought: Mike Golic usually sounds pretty bumbling in the morning show, but definitely seems more intelligent and in his element here.

Yeah.. I turned on the game and I was thinking, "Mike and Mike?? And Mike????"

there is definitely something wrong with the audio...you can barely hear greenberg.
the only thing i am worried about with golic is that he is being a little bit too familiar with things...he needs to distance himself from the field a little bit.

It almost sounds like they're broadcasting from Bristol.

They're annoying and I was horrified when they said they'd be commentating. But they have a following, so I guess I understand why they do it.

Oprah could be doing the PbP for this game, and her audience would've turned this shit off two hours ago.

I do love Golic's grunts and groans on every play...just adds to the atmosphere!!

How bout Ditka's "Here we go...watch out...here it is..." before and during every 3 yard punt return?

I fell asleep four times during the game. That's how bad it was.

Somebody drag Kornheiser out in the street and beat him. Seriously. He doesn't know shit about sports, his whole radio show was him asking people about sports instead of doing any commentating. I know that back in the day he was considered a good writer but ffs come on. I think he was still babbling about the jacket in the 4th quarter.

I might be alone here, but I thought that Mike & Mike were bearable. I don't listen to their show on ESPN, so no bias here. Wasn't a fan of Ditka, though.

I like Kornheiser... but I love PTI, so maybe that's why. But then again, I'm not looking for amazing commentary anyway. I can tolerate Madden because it's funny to listen to him. And you know a food mention is coming sometime too. :)
The Mikes were probably one of the first announce crews that I just really didn't like. hard to hear, and very boring. There was also another set that did an annoying thing this weekend... I forget what game, so maybe someone could help me here:
There was a black (but a "lighter" black) guy and a white guy standing in the booth... the black guy was to the white guy's right. The camera was on them for a period of time, and the white guy kept looking down at the field, so you could see him in a profile view as he talked. Meanwhile, the black guy kept staring at the camera. And then when he talked, he would go from the camera, to the field, to the white guy. And then back to starting into the camera. I don't know what it was about it... but it just seemed odd. One guy is ignoring the camera completely (probably didn't know it was on them), and the other guy can't decide where to look while talking but stares into the camera when he's not.
Who were these people?

I only paid attention to bits and pieces of the Mikex3 game last night. I thought Golic was OK, but the other two just plain stunk.
I loved Kornheiser's work on the radio, but he doesn't belong in the MNF booth. I understand what they re trying to go for -- someone to lighten things up a little -- but is it that hard to find someone who can do that and is also competent to offer a credible opinion or insight on the game, too? Apparently so.

You weren't watching football, you were watching Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson's video for "The Girl Is Mine"

I thought Golic was good, but I thought Greenberg was terrible. Ditka was annoying as well.

You know, maybe it was just me... but all three voices seemed the same to me. I didn't even know it was three Mikes until this morning!

I could live with Golic, not great, but I wouldn't turn off the sound because he was in the booth. I thought Greeny sucked and I say that being someone that likes to listen to Mike and Mike in the morning if I have the day off.
Funny thing is I remember Greeny commenting when Kornheiser got the MNF
job that he thought it was great and wanted Tony to succeed. The reason was if Tony succeeded then precedent would be set that a sports journalist could be a good thing in the booth. Of course this would open the door for Greeny himself to step into the MN booth in the future. Hey Greeny, I think you blew it:D

They did ok for the position that they were put in. Everyone is hard on Greeny, but the first time he started doing play by play was last year for the Arena League and how many games did he actually do? Golic has had more experience in the booth over the years which is probably why he sounded better. Their morning show is decent and that's where they should stay. The same goes with Kornheiser- He's good on the radio and PTI, but not on MNF. Jaws is a big improvement over Theismann though.

No.
Really? Cause after the 300th time I heard him say, "The [Instert Team or Player Here] are pretty good right?" to someone else I had to turn it off.

I really like kornheiser, but he's gotta step back and stop trying to crack jokes every 30 freaking seconds. he gets annoying when he grasps at lame laughs.
Jaws was great, ten thousand google of times better than Whiner-Joe. That group should make for enjoyable games all season long.

To Greeny's credit he flat out said he wasn't good. I think he at least realizes it. Whether he tries it again or not will probably be up to him.

i thought that was pretty big of him...they had a whole segment this morning with greeny going on about how badly he thought he did.
i am in the camp with those that thought golic was OK.

The fact that they did arena league games goes back to the original topic of this thread. They did nothing before this in terms of GAME announcing to warrant this.
Greeny always hints at the fact that he'd love to be commissioner of MLB. He really needs to check his ego.

I really hope that Kornheiser gets fired or quits this year. Not because I think he's bad, but because he's on hiatus from his talk show during football season. Just when my commute had become bearable, he runs off to his MNF gig until February.

These guys were way worse than like the AFC #5 regional team. I have no opinion on their radio show, either, as I don't ever listen to the radio. Give me some schmuck like Solomon Wilcots, at least he'll get the players name's right.

Jaws had the best line of the night... "you know who the biggest Johnson on the field is?" Kornheiser lost it for 2 minutes and then they luckily went to break.

I really enjoyed Jaws and Tirico. I could do without Kornheiser, although he isn't as annoying as he was with Theisman, because he doesn't need to challenge everything that Jaws says.
For the second game, only Golic was bearable. Why not have Dick Vermeil? He was good last year.

Why let an actual announcer call a game? That's absurd.
ESPN has taken company synergy way too far. Prepare yourself for color man Stuart Scott, it's coming, I can feel it.
