So, I am looking for a bit of advice here. Here is my situation

They just fired someone at work and have posted his job on the board. He was an engineer in a different department. Right now I am a technician in a different engineering department. I basically do the same work as the engineers I work with, I just make about half of what they do.

So I have been seriously considering applying for this job. I would think that I have a fairly decent chance of getting an interview. My problem is my dept. boss. He has always put down the depatment I would be moving too, and knowing his personality, he would not be very happy with me. So the dilemma I am faced with is this. If i apply for the position, and inform my boss, I know that this is going to make my work situation most likely difficult. I have no idea if he might stand in my way and make it hard for me to transfer.

Do you think that the reward of a job that would nearly double your salary, make it worth the risk of hurting your relationship with your boss for some time if you don't get the position?

I am about 90% certain that I am going to apply for the position, but I just wanted some others people thoughts, and maybe experiences.

I'd say apply for it. The reward is too great not to go for it.

Besides, if you don't apply, you might wonder what might have been.

Do you actually get to renegotiate your salary?

A suggestion:

Go to the head of the department who is the guy who will make the hiring decision. Tell him you are interested. Mention you work for the boss you do. It is likely this guy knows your boss puts down his department and doesn't like your boss. Ask him if you would recieve serious consideration for the position. If he says, "yes" go for it. If he hesitates or says "no", don't apply.

I've seen this work many times, though I've never had to do so myself.

If you know the guy, and think he would know you, definitely do this. He'll appreciate it, and will give you a solid read on your chances.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained...then again, better safe than sorry.

Sayings and maxims can be applied to any situation, but I'd say that you know far more of the details than we do that would make you choose one course of action over the other. I would guess that the overwhelming response from an anonymous internet community would be go for it. Since we see the reward in the situation but don't have to deal with the consequences, most of us are going to tell you to apply for the job. I'd keep that in mind.

That's good advice.

My opinion is that if your boss is the type that would make things tough for you because you are applying for a different position in the same company that pays twice what you make, you should be looking for a new boss even if this position doesn't work out.

My company wont negotiate salary most likely. I would be given the lowest salary amount for that job grade. Which is still almost double what I make now.

I can imagine that he will be condescending towards me. And I have a feeling that he might lean on them not to hire me because i dont have an engineering degree. But I have to find out myself. and even if this is the straw that breaks the camels back, it is better for it to happen now rather than later.
