The Browns have traded quarterback Charlie Frye to the Seattle Seahwaks to make room on the roster for veteran Ken Dorsey.

The Browns will get a second day draft (6th round) in return for the one-time University of Akron starter.

If they couldn't trade him, the Browns had planned to cut Frye.

Dorsey was cut ten days before the season began. But after Frye’s dismal performance on Sunday against the Steelers, the decision was made to eliminate Frye.

In just over a quarter of play on Sunday against the Steelers, Frye was 4-of-10 for 34 yards and 1 INT. Frye was also sacked five times before giving way to Derek Anderson early in the second quarter.

No word yet from the Browns on who will start Sunday against the Bengals, but the fans on Sunday were chanting for rookie Brady Quinn.

The Seahawks have been in the market for a backup quarterback, which will free them up to use Seneca Wallace in other positions around the field.

I like this deal from the Seattle side (who have also traded Bryce Fisher to the Titans for an as of yet undisclosed pick). Haven't watched Frye a bunch, but from what I've read he's accurate on the short to mid range passes and throws decently on the run and has a lot of confidence in himself. Problems being reading blitzes and holding onto the ball too long as well as the deep ball. If Zorn and Holmgren can help him improve the first two areas of concern, he'll make a very nice backup and allow them to expand Wallace's role on the team (whether that's to be the return man while Hackett is out so they don't risk Burleson there or as a WR, who knows).

For a 6th, even if that's all they could get out of the Titans and they flipped it for Frye, makes them a deeper team all around seeing as how Babin will step into Fisher's spot and supply (hopefully) better pressure. Only worry is that Fisher was one of our better DE's against the run and with Tubbs out, and further subtraction there is just a bit more pressure piled on the shoulders of the rookie Mebane.

I'd be curious to know if Mike Holmgren sees something in Frye that makes him worth trading for or if the Seahawks were simply filling a need since they had only 2 QBs on the roster.

I question whether acquiring Frye will allow them to use Wallace elsewhere -- at least for this season. It will be a couple of months before Frye could possibly understand enough of the offense to qb the team.

I am also a browns fan. I don't understand how they won't just put Quinn in. They say he's not ready but the ones that were led us to that debale on sunday. Frye should get some credit for Roethlisbergers production this weekend. I really wanted to like Frye but I got so scared about what would happen everytime he threw the ball. A 6th for him is a dream come IMO.

Brady Quinn Leads Browns Into Post-Preseason

CLEVELAND—Establishing a reputation for quarterback performance that football insiders have called "reasonable," Browns quarterback Brady Quinn silenced his critics and stunned his coaches, teammates, and family by performing competently enough in his limited play during preseason games to put the Cleveland Browns in 2007 post-preseason contention.

"I guess I can only say 'Wow,'" former Miami Dolphins quarterback and current Inside The NFL co-host Dan Marino said Tuesday following the announcement that Cleveland would advance to the regular season, playing the Pittsburgh Steelers in their first game on Sept. 9. "Wow. I think I speak for everyone when I say no one thought Brady Quinn could do it. To see him come into that preseason game against the Lions and just embarrass one of the best auto mechanics to ever play cornerback in the NFL…I admit it, I didn't think he had it in him."

"Quinn seemed possessed, like he was out there playing like it was the last game those other guys would ever play," added Marino, saying Quinn reminded him of a younger version of a quarterback who used to back him up.

In his first-ever preseason start against the Detroit Lions, Quinn defied the extremely low expectations when he did not run out onto the field with his helmet on backwards, trip over the yard lines, line up to take the snap behind a wideout, or attempt to roll the ball down the field towards his receivers.

"I couldn't believe what I was seeing," said Sports Illustrated football writer Peter King. "The conventional wisdom going into that game was that Brady Quinn was a huge mistake on the part of the Browns. But anyone who saw him will tell you he might not be all that big of a mistake after all."

This breathtaking display of basic knowledge of football fundamentals continued in a workmanlike display of quarterbacking against a group of men attempting to make the Lions, as Quinn threw for 81 yards while not falling into any random holes or stepping on any rakes that had been left lying around the field. And in the final game of the preseason, facing a Bears defense that almost certainly contained players who will make Chicago's taxi squad, Quinn threw only a single interception while conspicuously not lighting himself or his teammates on fire or tying his shoelaces together even once.

Predictably, Browns fans were ecstatic at the level of Quinn's performance.

"Mark my words, Brady is going to be one of our quarterbacks of the immediate future," said Ken Fairfield, a Browns preseason-ticket holder who said he would be camping out for regular-season Browns tickets long before they went on sale, if not for the fact they would almost certainly be readily available. "I can't believe people said he wouldn't even be an adequate field general. If what I saw in the second halves of those games wasn't adequate, I don't know what is."

"I'm completely surprised…I always felt that we could count on Quinn to totally blow it, but this is whole different side that we could never imagine," Browns head coach Romeo Crennel said. "I anticipated that he would hand off the ball to the first defensive lineman he saw. I even game-planned for it, keeping a fullback deep in the backfield to tackle him if he started running the wrong way. But then he goes and throws a basic little dump-off pass to Cribbs in the flat and it turns into a touchdown."

"I'm not saying we wouldn't have made it to the regular season without him," said Crennel, "but his play certainly didn't hurt. Which is one hell of a nice surprise, let me tell you."

Charlie Frye has been confirmed as the starter for the Sept. 9 game. Quinn is currently fourth on the depth chart, behind Frye, Derek Anderson, and strong-armed long-snapper Ryan Pontbriand.

"Once in awhile, you get an offer that you have to really take seriously, no matter who it is for," said Phil Savage. "This was one of those offers. We had a chance to get some real, high quality french fries, and we took that chance, and we're not going to look back."

Frye, who started at quarterback for the Browns last Sunday in a 34-7 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, was 4-for-10 for 34 yards, an interception, and a 10.0 quarterback rating.

Many in the Browns organization think the move was motivated by head coach Romeo Crennel. "Look, it's two birds with one stone for me," Crennel said. "My job becomes a lot easier, what with only having to deal with two quarterbacks, and I also got a beautiful basket of grade A Idaho potato french fries!"

"To be sure, the fries aren't all for Romeo," Savage said, after being notified by rookie quarterback Brady Quinn that Crennel had locked himself in his office and begun to devour the trade bounty. "We'll share the fries."

Mike Holmgren, coach and GM of the Seahawks, indicated that he was very uneasy about getting rid of the fries, but that he felt like it was the best move for his squad right now. "A lot of people are calling me and saying, 'Mike, how can you be sad about this deal? You got a real human quarterback in exchange for some french fries,'" Holmgren told SSNN. "But the bottom line is that there were all different types of fries in that basket, there were crinkle cuts fries, curly-Q fries, cheese fries, those little fake fries that you get out of the vending machine that look like toothpicks, you know what I'm talking about.

"And while we're on the subject," Holmgren continued, "Charlie Frye is a human and he does play the position of quarterback, but it's not exactly like we traded for the next Sean Salisbury here. Charlie Frye has a lot of work to do. Still, I think we have some options."

Quinn, for his part, is excited about the challenge that this trade possesses. "I feel like I have a good chance to compete against this basket of fries, particularly if Romeo continues to devour it," he said. "The fries have a lot of NFL experience, but I have an edge on arm strength and I know the offense a little better. All I want is a shot."
