So I want to change my hair for the winter, to something that I can wear a touque over. Right now I spike my hair, which is impossible to put a touque on without flattening it. If I don't spike, my hair looks so crappy when it gets longer.
I don't want to go for a haircut every 2 weeks in the winter, so I thought I'd change my hair... but I have no idea what styles can fit under a toque? Is there anyone I can get help on this from FOFC?
And no, I don't want to go bald.

It's a Canadian thing, we wouldn't understand.

Bah, however you spell it. Toque? Here's a sample (no this isn't me):

I figured that's what you meant.
I've only heard them called knit cap and Toboggan in the US.

I'll try to find that pic of me in the What The Hell Do You Look Like thread... maybe then it'll be easier for people to picture hair on me.

That's silly, a toboggan is what kids ride on the snow in the winter... I've heard knit caps though.

The Toboggan term confused me at first as well, but I've heard it more and more lately - in fact it may have been when I moved down here from the DC area that I started hearing it.. but I think it was from imports from Jersey, NY, etc..

Just grow it out, with a beanie as I've also heard it called, people won't notice your hair anyway and after a while it will be a little shag to it and look fine. Probably. Unless you have thin hair.

Yeah just grow the shit out, don't do anything to it in the morning, put on the tonic or whatever the hell you Mounties call it, and then when you take it off, run your hand through your hair a few times. It'll look nice and messed up.
I nominate this for gayest FOFC thread ever.

I let my hair grow longer-ish before I cut it, but when I take my beanie off (I just wear it outside, as it's too cold for me in the winter... but it's too hot to leave it on inside), my hair still looks like it has the bangs completely sticking out in front. Like, hovering over my head.
I have thick hair.

We're gonna have to ask you to return your card of Canadian citizenship if you can't tough it out in the winter. :)
Unless you take the bus or have to walk long period of time, then maybe, maybe we'll allow it...

how long is longerish to you? i used to always be wary of growing my hair out, before really letting it get long id cut it because id think it looked puffy but it really just wasnt even long enough to fall down, i mean this is such a weird discussion haha but maybe if you let it go a little longer than you've let it before your bangs shouldn't stand forward at all

I figured getting haircut advice would be almost impossible, but thought I'd get some ideas going to take to my hairdresser. :)
Yeah, I don't know how to describe longerish. My hair grows pretty fast, and I consider it longerish after about 2 months. Gelling it to be spiky at that point takes awhile, and a lot of gel.
I'll get another haircut in a bit, and ask my hairdresser what she thinks. Then I'll grow it out for the winter to see what it looks like haha.

does your hair ever lay flat or is it always upright, it's hard to imagine longer hair with that style. haha i tried
This thread is hilarious. I gotta agree with Shorty, if you're gonna grow it long you gotta be in for the long haul because there will be about a 2 week period or so where your hair will seem as if it's in no mans land. However, after that it's gravy and the possibilities are endless.

I don't have it gelled all the time, but when I go out it's gelled. When I just get a haircut, I don't gel it either. It's short enough to look good. However, when it's longerish and not gelled, it's pretty uhh fluffy. If I wear a beanie for like an hour or so, it flattens out... but the bangs still look weird.
I'll ask my hairdresser for recommendations, but might just grow it out to see what happens. Thanks for trying.

Ditto. And remember unless the lady is from Staten Island, they hate running their fingers through spikes, so bonus for the longer hair. I can defo visualize a really nice cut that will look great on you. Grow it out long, then get it layered. Longer layers (if you can handle that kind of change, you'll look great). Don't let it hang into your face. Put a little gel and smooth it away from your face because you have a nice forehead and face shape. Play that up..

my brother and i are currently in a ridiculous bet to see who can go longer without cutting their hair. we are about 6 months in, and speaking of layers, it would *really* help right now.
as for that "2 week" awkward period...id say it lasts a helluva lot longer than that (so far about 6 months!). but really the awkwardness starts when it gets a decent amount longer, not a few weeks in.
MV - go messy on this one, especially in winter with a hat. just throw some product in there and mess it up a bit. then the hat wont make it any worse.

On her card it says hairdresser... I always thought a barber was a male term for a person that cuts your hair, and a hairdresser was an unisex term. My hairdresser isn't hot... she's an older, homely woman.

Whenever I get a cold I end up having to go to a walk-in clinic and wait for a couple of hours to get some amoxicillin since I never seem to get normal colds. So I try to avoid getting sick as much as possible.

My dad said the same thing to us about wearing the hat, and I've found that he has been right. If I'm out for a long time in cold without a hat I won't feel well the next day.
As for the hair, if she is old and homely and calls herself a "hairdresser", she defo won't know what looks good or how to do it. ;) I worked in a salon, so I was able to pick up a lot of info. Plus, listen to the wimminsess.

She has a super hot daughter that's coming along as a "hairdresser," plus there's a few other younger women there. She gave me the haircut I have now when I came in a few years ago after years of my dad cutting my hair (forced)... so I have some faith in her. :)
