Just turned the UMD/WVU game..

Surprised to see it only 7-7 and the 1st quarter is almost over.

Everyone I heard was calling for a WVU blowout (and I would have to agree).

I was fully expecting a blowout, especially after the first play.

Terps still aren't looking great and WVU tends to come on strong in the 2nd half, lot of football left to play...

Side Note - This is an ENTIRELY different crowd and atmosphere than when I went to watch them beat up on W&M last year.

And West Virginia breaks out in the 2nd half again (so far). It seems they just wear down teams and then run crazy in the 3rd and 4th Quarter.

And Devine looks incredibly scary! Add to Slaton and White!

Air force against TCU. Air Force hung tight stopping TCU twice inside the 5 yard line and kept the game close 10-3 until TCU scored a score in the mid 4th quarter to break it open 17-3;(

I guess I'm biased, but West Virginia looks great to me. White, Slaton, Schmitt and Devine splitting carries out of the same backfield is just unbelievable.

What I'm wondering is how Friedgen will slight the WVU coaching staff tonight. He has a bit of a history of dissing Rich Rodriguez's staff. (http://www.collegefootballfrenzy.com/)

I spoke to soon.Air Force has scored two TDs in about a 3 minute span one being on a 75 yard run. Just now, TCU was marching down the field for the apparent game winning FG when they had the ball at Air Forces 21 with 45 seconds and threw an interception in the endzone. Why were thye threwing? I'm with you. I think Maryland is, at least, an 8-win team in '07. I'm real pleased with the win--we didn't blow them out, but I never felt like the game was in question (even when it was within 7).

We haven't been completely dominating, but I'm pretty pleased to get through our first three games with our closest game being 17-points. Our early season OOC schedule isn't super tough, but we have two 2006 bowl teams (Maryland and W. Michigan), two rivals that probably hold the game in higher regard than we do (Maryland and Marshall), and, unlike a lot of top 25 teams, we have already played/won two road games (and in a span of five days, no less).

I'm really looking forward to seeing Devine and Slaton on the field together. It usually takes a little while for freshmen to get in Coach Rod's good graces, but Devine has to be getting close to earning his trust.

I know they played last week. They also won last week, didn't get their hearts torn out against a top 10 team that they consider a rival, and got to play this game at home.

Still, great win for Air Force. They have some pretty tough (underrated) competition the next two weeks, but if they can get through BYU and Navy, they could cruise into that game against Notre Dame at 10-0, which would be pretty exciting. :)

Big rivalry game for the Miners against NMSU this weekend. Their offense is very similar to Texas Tech's, so the defense didn't have to learn much of anything new at practice this weekend. And after giving Tech a major scare, I'm sure we can tear into a tear with far inferior talent running the same scheme...

Another reason why Colorado and the West is not the South

n DeBerry’s office, March 2003, the coach spoke in his classic southern drawl: “Nah, don’ chew go thankin’ football ’round here is like it is back home,” DeBerry said to a fellow Southerner. “Cause it ain’t like that.”

No coach, it ain’t.

Even with Air Force’s stunning 20-17 overtime victory over Texas Christian, it ain’t.

You see, back home, folks actually go to games to see the home team play.

Day of the week doesn’t matter. Time of day doesn’t matter either.

Where was Colorado Springs? Where were the rest of the Air Force fans? Official attendance was 31,556. And that was a joke. There might have been a family or two more than 22,000 in a stadium that seats 46,692.

The night was beautiful. Cloudless. A slight crispness filled the air. The home team was undefeated and coming off a road upset.

Methinks because it was a beautiful evening, peope were actually out and about. I saw plenty of joggers and bikers, people hanging out downtown and those simply out walking around the neighborhoods.

And I just have a really hard time understanding why people would be doing any of those things when there's a college football game to watch.

And I say that as someone who is probably at best only at or around the median for interest in college football in the South.

Notre Dame quarterback Demetrius Jones did not board a bus departing for the trip to Michigan, Coach Charlie Weis said in a statement Friday.

Jones started Notre Dame's opener, a 33-3 loss at home to Georgia Tech. He was pulled as starter last Saturday against Penn State in favor of freshman Jimmy Clausen.

Jones' status at Notre Dame is now in doubt.

Against Georgia Tech, Jones was 1-of-3 passing for 4 yards and ran the ball 12 times for 28 yards. Four of the six drives he led ended in three-and-outs, and he fumbled the ball away on the other two possessions.

"At 2:30 today, while boarding the bus to Michigan, I was notified that Demetrius Jones had decided not to make the trip," Weis said in a statement. "I have not spoken to Demetrius and can only say that he missed the team bus. Any additional comment would be without all the facts."

Really? I'm not sure I see us at 8 wins...our first 2 wins were unimpressive, of the remaining schedule, I'm not sure I see 6 more wins...
@ Wake, @ Rutgers, vs. Georgia Tech, vs. Virginia (homecoming), vs. Clemson, @ North Carolina, vs. Boston College, @ Florida State, @ NC State

Of those, I'd say we'll probably win against Virginia, with Clemson and UNC, we stand a decent shot, and NC State is 50-50. The rest I could see us losing, especially if we play like we have so far. Our defense has actually been really good, I was quite happy with what I saw last night. The offense, on the other hand....stupid Portis.

Ok its probably predictable that I would jump all over this, but...
Good shot against Clemson and UNC but NC state is 50-50. But you see losing to Wake, GT, BC, and FSU...

Not sure I follow your logic. Id say other than Rutgers and GT Clemson is your most sure loss on the remainder of your schedule. We handled FSU, NC State is a joke this year, Wake has done nothing in 2 games. But time will tell...

Obviously, nothing is guaranteed, but I think the Terps should roll against UNC, NC State, and UVA. I think they match up pretty well against Wake, Rutgers, Georgia Tech, BC, and FSU. I think Clemson's offensive speed (re: big play ability) is similar to that of West Virginia, so that will be a tough one. Fridge seems like he wants to play ball control offense with good defense and that usually does not work well when the opponent has homerun hitters (like WVU's and Clemson's backfield).

Lattimore and the o-line looked real good and the defense looked pretty solid to me. They used a linebacker to spy Patrick White the entire game (and successfully stopped him), but they won't need to do that against teams without mobile QBs like White, so I think they will look a lot better against teams that play pro-style offenses (like Rutgers, BC, GT). Unless Steffy fails to improve throughout the rest of the season, I think they have 8-wins in them, as the ACC is still a little down.

Ok State had the media in their corner coming into the season, but following what success? Nothing more than a 7-6 season last year. Every year they are the next great thing. But nothing. This preseason, on the Official Oklahoma State website, they even proclaimed themselves as having "The Greatest Offense in the World".

The sad thing is that Troy hasn't even played all that well this game and they are still beating the crap out of them. Troy's coach has made two horrendous play calls (fake punt inside his own thirty and not managing the clock at the end of the first half).

Pitt has some talent, but they are very weak on both lines and at quarterback. My observation is that they are not real well coached, either. You see a lot of fundamental mistakes (inopportune penalties, poor decisions by skill players, missed tackles, etc.). As a WVU fan, my biggest fear is if/when Wanny gets canned, they hire a good fundamental coaching staff, because they have quite a bit of talent there.

I usually think it is a good idea to give any new coach five years so that they can get their players and philosophies installed, but I don't see a shred of improvement from them and they are rarely even competitive in their games with decent teams anymore. But he is the new AD's selection and he doesn't seem like the type of guy to admit that he made a bad choice. I think the whole Syracuse AD could use a shake up (aside from men's bball).

Notre Dame quarterback Demetrius Jones has enrolled at Northern Illinois and intends to play there next season, according to a source familiar with the situation.

Jones started Notre Dame's season opener against Georgia Tech, but was pulled before the end of the first half and had not played since. He did not join Notre Dame on its road trip to Michigan this weekend.

Friday, Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis confirmed that Jones had decided not to make the team's bus trip to Michigan. "I have not spoken to Demetrius and can only say that he missed the team bus. Any additional comment would be without all the facts," Weis said in a statement.

Against Georgia Tech, Jones was 1-of-3 passing for 4 yards and ran the ball 12 times for 28 yards. Four of the six drives he led ended in three-and-outs, and he fumbled the ball away on the other two possessions. Freshman Jimmy Clausen replaced Jones as Notre Dame's starter for last week's game at Penn State.

The departure is the second for a Notre Dame quarterback since this spring. Zach Frazer, who was eliminated from contention for the starting job after spring practice, transferred to Connecticut.

Wannstedt is a pretty good recruiter, but he is not very good at finding coaches that teach or scheme well. Pitt's AD job just opened up (former AD left to take over at Arkansas) and I think Pitt and Wanny would be better off if they promoted him to an admin. job and brought in a younger, more dynamic head coach.

Dola... here are the QBs that were invite to the Elite 11 that year:

NEIL CAUDLE - Caudle attended the EA SPORTS Elite 11 workout in Atlanta and the NIKE Camp in Athens the following day back in May. He was impressive on film and our staff was anxious to him in person and see if he was recovered from a torn ACL suffered as a junior. Caudle had a strong day at the Elite 11 workout showing a live, accurate arm and didn't appear hobbled by the knee. The following day, Caudle didn't look a bit fatigued and wasn't as strong as the previous day but he was still an easy call to make the cut. The 6-1, 191 pounder out of Birmingham (Ala.) Spain Park recently committed to Auburn over Michigan and Miami. He is the third Alabama signal caller to qualify for the EA SPORTS Elite 11, joining Brodie Croyle (2000) and JaMarcus Russell (2002).

PAT DEVLIN - Devlin first appeared on our radar a year ago at the NIKE Camp in State College when he was just a rising junior and he was one of the best kids in the camp that year. The 6-3, 200 pounder came back to the camp at State College this year looking bigger, stronger and much more confident. The Miami commit has plus physical tools and is impressive with his makeup and the way he carries himself. The Downingtown (Pa.) East signal caller is a natural leader and someone his teammates will follow in the huddle and to us, that is almost as important as any quality a quarterback can possess.

ZACH FRAZER - Like Devlin, Frazer first gained notice a year ago at the NIKE Camp in State College following his sophomore season. With his size, arm strength and toughness, most were expecting Frazer to put on a show at the same camp this year and felt he would be a stone cold lock to make the EA SPORTS Elite 11 after a record-setting junior season at Mechanicsburg (Pa.). Unfortunately, Frazer injured his foot and never got to throw. He came back to the final EA SPORTS Elite 11 workout in Las Vegas and still look hobbled and wasn't able to participate in all the drills. After watching his film a second and third time and knowing what kind of kid Frazier was, it was clear he belonged and expect big things in the days to come from the Notre Dame bound signal caller.

JOSH FREEMAN - Following the EA SPORTS Elite 11 workout and NIKE Camp in Ann Arbor, Freeman's chances to make the final camp didn't look so good. The 6-6, 230 pounder definitely struggled in Ann Arbor with a tired arm and was looking more like a future athlete than a quarterback to many. To his credit, the Grandview (Mo.) standout didn't make excuses but just said he had a bad day and came to Las Vegas for one last chance. In all our years of doing camps, it's very difficult to recall a player making a more dramatic improvement than Freeman did from Ann Arbor to Las Vegas. The Nebraska commit's arm was strong and accurate, he knew where to go with the ball, his feet were quick and he showed he belonged.

CODY HAWKINS - With his size (5-11, 175 pounds), where he comes from (Boise, Idaho) and lack of big-time offers, Hawkins is probably the quarterback on our list who the casual fan probably assumes doesn't belong. That is understandable to the casual fan, but anyone who saw Hawkins throw at the NIKE Camp in Stanford or the EA SPORTS Elite 11 workout the following day at Cal, they know this isn't a reach. Simply stated, at any of the 12 NIKE Camps, Hawkins had the most impressive workout of anyone on the list with the possible exception of Mitch Mustain. The Idaho native has a live arm, great feet, an incredible head for the game and his intangibles like leadership and the ability to rally players around him are off the charts.

JAKE LOCKER - Heading in to the camp next week, Locker is one of the guys that is expected to have a dominating showing. This 6-2, 210 pound athlete has great film and was always high on our board, but exceeded even our high expectations at the final EA SPORTS Elite 11 workout in Las Vegas with a superb showing. The Ferndale (Wash.) signal caller plays in a veer, run oriented offense and doesn't have the as much traditional dropback passing background as most of the other quarterbacks. That made it even more impressive that Locker was a top performer in Vegas, showing off a rifle arm with a quick release, not to mention his tremendous athleticism that is probably only rivaled by Tim Tebow in this class.

MITCH MUSTAIN - This 6-3, 200 pounder out of Springdale (Ark.) comes in to the camp with as much hype if not more than anyone but it's definitely deserved. The talented signal caller has every tool a coach could want in a quarterback and is destined for stardom in college. He has a great quarterback body, a cannon for an arm with a nice tight release and throws a great deep ball. On top of his physical tools, Mustain is just a great kid, personable and someone who will have no problem gaining the respect of his teammates at the next level. At the NIKE Camp in Oxford, Mustain put on a show in what might have been the best workout this year at any of the 12 NIKE Camps.

KEVIN RILEY - Riley came out of nowhere this spring and is one of those guys that just gets better and better every time he workouts. The Beaverton (Ore.) standout was only behind Hawkins at the NIKE Camp in Stanford, putting forth a very impressive showing. He attended the Elite 11 workout at Cal the following day and again shined. The 6-1, 192 pounder really stepped up in Vegas where, at a loaded camp, he out-threw every quarterback in the camp not named Matthew Stafford. Riley has a very live arm and gets rid of the ball very quick. He has great feet and is a player that could be the surprise of the camp and at the next level playing for the Cal Bears.

JEVAN SNEAD - Like Frazer, Snead missed the NIKE Camp earlier in the year due to injury. He tore meniscus in his right knee and still wasn't 100% at the time of the final workout in Vegas. Still, the Stephenville (Texas) star gutted it out and still had a very good camp in our eyes. He's a big, strong kid at 6-2, 210 pounds, who throws a nice ball and can move around very well for a big man. Where the Florida bound quarterback was able to seal the deal was on film. In comparing Snead's film to other top quarterbacks nationally, he has a lot of upside to him and should do very well in Urban Meyer's system at Florida.

MATTHEW STAFFORD - Heading in to the EA SPORTS Elite 11 next week, Stafford is the top pure passing quarterback on our board. The Dallas (Texas) Highland Park gunslinger has been on our board since he was just a freshman in high school and has been in the news ever since. The Georgia commit wasn't able to make it to the NIKE Camp in Fort Worth and needed a solid showing in Vegas to make the final cut. Stafford definitely delivered, showing arguably the strongest arm of any quarterback in the nation this year with great mechanics and college-ready build. The quarterback can make all the throws, he's smart and also has a great personality for the position.

TIM TEBOW - Tebow wasn't at his best at the NIKE Camp in Tallahassee, but has upside off the charts. The Jacksonville (Fla.) Nease quarterback is a freak athletically whose 96.92 SPARQ Rating is the best this year from a quarterback. The Florida native was still trying to knock off the rust when we saw him at the NIKE Camp as he had been playing baseball for the previous three months and hadn't even picked up a football.

After watching his film however, Tebow was a slam dunk choice for the EA SPORTS Elite 11 and the first player invited this year. He has a strong arm and throws a nice deep ball. He's tough and physical and runs like a fullback in the open field. He's also a has a great personality and his teammates will love playing with him at the next level, wherever he ends up.

ISIAH WILLIAMS - Williams is one of the players that could gain the most from his experience at the EA SPORTS Elite 11. The Chicago (Ill.) Vocational standout is still somewhat raw but has great upside with an arm comparable to Stafford's in terms of it's strength. At the NIKE Camp and EA SPORTS Elite 11 workout in Ann Arbor, Williams impressed onlookers with not only his arm strength but how quickly he improved in the drills and how fast he learned the drills. The Illinois bound quarterback is just as impressive on film and although he didn't put up great numbers as a junior in a run-oriented offense, his obvious physical tools and his high ceiling at the next level made him a player we locked in early ahead of several other more highly-rated quarterbacks.

Interesting. I'll stand by my statement for now. I haven't seen a better QB than either of these two. I will note that I love the way Hawkins looks for CU. He's not a Heisman winner, but he's a hell of a leader and he makes good throws. (the receivers catching them are another thing. . . )

Tebow and Lockler are just special, special college QB's. I'll be interested to see how they translate to the pros. Thankfully we have a few years of watching both of them in college before that happens. (Yeah, I like pro ball more, but these guys were made for college offenses)

No question about it and when rating the two QB's that'll certainly play into things. But Tebow has made some pretty damned impressive throws today and is every bit the runner Lockler is. He's fast and powerful. Both guys are a joy to watch.

Texas goes into the half with a 20-10 lead, and they get the 2nd half kickoff, after a TD is correctly reversed by replay, and they settle for a FG. If they score coming out of the half, I don't think UCF has a QB that can bring them back.

Actually, I don't give a shit if every other team in the B10 loses their out-of-conference game (except PSU of course). I'm just hoping PSU is going to be competitive in the B10.

As it looks right now, the Michigan beast has been awoken, and I'm VERY nervous about next week.

Turning that game back on...

You can turn it back off now. 35-20 after a fumble return for a TD.
Ainge, trying to do some fucked up backhanded hand off shit (that you could see was awkward as hell earlier in the game) to protect the broken finger botches a handoff that Coker never had, ball bounces to a defender who takes it to the house.

And UT was very lucky to recover yet another Coker fumble on the ensuing KOR.
Can't blame that one on Ainge.

Hmm, announcer saying Washington hasn't played very well. I wouldn't exactly say that's very accurate. They've made some mistakes, but they've played tough against one of the top teams in the country. Even if they don't come back, I think they've shown they are a team on the rise. Definitely something for their fans to be excited about.

I'm not going to gripe because I'm mostly from the "if you don't want us to do it then you ought to stop it" school, but I'll predict there'll be some minor heat given to Meyer (or Tebow if it was an audible) for throwing a bomb with a 29 point lead & eight minutes to play.

I will say, however, that it'd serve 'em right for leaving Tebow in if he got hurt in the final drive.

Whew, I can breathe easier now.

Texas went up by 5 on a FG with 5 minutes left. The UCF QB ran for a first down, but fumbled the ball as he went down. The ball was heading out of bounds, but died just in bounds and Texas recovered. On the first play, Jamaal Charles runs for a TD. 35-24 Texas with under 5 minutes to go.

I thought that UCF would play tough today to break in their new stadium, and they have played Texas very well.
