The Montreal Canadiens regular season tickets went on sale today at noon, and god knows they are hard to get online. I still managed to get four tickets for the game I wanted, but when I got on the buying page, where I was going to give my credit card number, the connection was not secured (there was no lock icon at the bottom of the screen).

Being the stupid unintelligent idiot that I am, I bought the tickets anyway because if I turned back there was no chance in hell I was getting another shot at those tickets, unless it was from scalpers.

Now I'm kinda worried. How ''Dangerous'' is it really to give your credit card number on a non secured website online? And should I be worried that an official tickets-selling site don't have a security system? Did I buy the tickets on a false website?

I pay for stuff online almost every day and I have had only problems once, when it seems that somebody stole a credit cards database from a site (it doesn't matter if payment process is secure or not if later somebody can steal their credit cards database) and my card was used to buy ice creams and a meal in USA (it seems it was a test to see if my stolen card # was still valid).

As i review my credit card statement daily, as soon as I saw the weird expenses, i called my bank, the credit card was cancelled and the money returned to me.

Neither VISA or banks wants you to be scared of using your card online, so if anything happens, they will for sure help you and return your money back. There is also a 180 days warranty for any credit card payment, so you can contact your bank, say that is was fraud and they will give you your money back without a lot of troubles.

I fact i have seen that warranty used in a bad way, getting money bank from legit payments... as usually VISA and the bank prefer to lose some money than you talking everywhere that your card was stolen online. Of course if you claim it as fraud every day trying to get an advantage of that warranty, you will be flagged as fraud yourself and you could have problems geting a new card, but don't be afraid unless you want to do the fraud yourself.

Paying online with a credit card is not more dangerous than paying with it in a store, as also the store could put a card reader to steal your data if they wanted to. What about when you give your card to the waiter, he goes to the payment machine out of your eye sight and then gets it back to you? what can he do with the card in the mean time?

Just review from time to time your statement (most of banks allow you to do it onlin in real time) and if you find anyting weird, call your bank and have the card cancelled and your money returned because fraud. Also be carefull with the sites where you pay, take a good look first to see if the site is legit and you can always google it to see if you can find any realted fraud reported in any forum or blog.
