Yeah um....good luck there.

The Astros just fired a manager, Phil Garner, who had never been to the playoffs before he managed in Houston. Now they hire a GM who has never been a GM for a playoff team. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Dola

The Phillies didn't make the playoffs last year. Probably won't make it this year. The farm system isn't strong now. I think it's safe to say that Ed Wade had a very unsuccessful term as GM.

Bob Watson wanted the job, but I guess that made too much sense.

Ed Wade had a good rep before he came to Philly, but I thought he made some horrendous decisions and bosshogg makes some good points. I wouldn't be happy if I was an Astros' fan.

traded schilling for travis lee, nelson figueroa and vincente padilla.

traded rolen for placido polanco, mike timlin and bud smith.

hired larry bowa.

gave david bell a 4 year, $17 million contract.

traded carlos silva and nick punto for eric milton.

gave mike lieberthal a 3 year, $22.5 million contract extension.

gave bobby abreu a 5 year, $64 million contract extension with a no trade clause.

just when I thought there was a light at the end of the astro tunnel, they hire this guy. nice.

hired larry bowa.in order to do that, he fired Terry Francona who I think had some success at his next team...

However, I will give the man some credit.

He did bring in Ryan Howard, Chase Utley (1st round pick, too), Cole Hamels, Brett Myers, Jimmy Rollins, and Shane Victorino. None of those guys were Gillick guys.

His two biggest mistakes were:

1. Giving gigantic albatross contracts to Bobby Abreu and Pat Burrell. Although Abrau is a good player, he just wasn't the right fit for what Philly think is important. Even though Abreu is probably more talented than Rowland, nearly evrey Phillie fan you talk to would prefer Rowland over Abreu because of the way they play.

2. Choosing Larry Bowa over Scott Rolen. Bowa and Rolen hated each other (and apparently, Rolen hates every baseball coach), so Wade's hand was forced and he basically dealt Rolen for peanuts. I wonder sometimes how good the Phillies would be with an infield of Howard, Utley, Rollins, and a healthy Rolen.

1. This is ridiculous - Abreu, over that contract, was one of the 10 best players in the NL. The fact that idiotic Philly fans prefer the HTWG (Hustling Telegenic White Guy - BP's term) is a mark of their stupidity, not his. Philly fans who think "grit and hustle" are the way to success ought to have learned their lesson with Larry Bowa (or with Scott Rolen, or with Mike Schmidt). You don't have to be a loudmouthed, "crashing into walls" type to be a great player.

No, but it's also not asking much for an OF not to approach the wall as if there's a 120 foot drop into shark-infested waters past the warning track.

a healthy Rolen.

I'm not sure such a thing exists anymore, honestly.

This is the same guy that almost traded Ryan Howard for Cris Benson supposedly. But it's funny since Littlefield is dumber and actually turned it down.

Astros looking good in preseason.

I was with the Red Barons as an intern in 2004, and I can tell you that everyone thought this was a damn near certainty.

Also, Utley was nearly traded as well, IIRC

I've always liked abreu, and phillie fans are notoriously stupid/mean. that said, when you give a huge contract AND a no-trade to a guy who the fans are going to scapegoat, you're drawing yourself into a corner. it was a bad move.

I don't think rolen is the only guy in the world who might have problems with larry bowa and tony larussa...both of those guys are dicks.

You have my sympathy.

What to expect? Not much.

Expect him to describe his prospects as untouchables and expect alot of garbage for garbage deals(and if any of them work out expect to hear about that deal whenever anyone questions his moves, or non moves).

I don't like Ed Wade, that being said, I expect now that he's no longer with the Phils that he'll do well, simply because everyone does better once they leave Philly.
