Here's some 4-1-1, some the results of tests. What's probably MOST important to know is that at this point, it's about 99.99% certain that the patch is both forward and backward compatible. In other words, if the commish is on 6.0e, you can export with 6.1 just fine, and if the commish is on 6.1, you can export on 6.0e just fine. In either case, whatever version the commish is on will be the version that the sims are run on. So, for example, if you're exporting on 6.1 and the commish is on 6.0e, you'll still need to account for the goal-line usage and 3-4 nickel blitzing issues, as they'll still be there in the games that are simmed. Here are some important details to know, probably:
Multi-player leagues can implement a patch at any time. However, due to changes in the scouting algorithm, it's best to implement right before ending a season, or right after training camp, to avoid giving participants too much extra information about their players.
FYI,
I just exchanged words with Jim and you guys should go ahead and upgrade. My take is that anyone running the new version will have a more accurate view of players, so if only some of you do it, those people would have a competitive advantage.
Meanwhile, I'm going to stick with the old version until the end of the playoffs. Seems that switching up in mid stream may lead to some funky stats and I'm not going to risk the integrity of the playoffs by upgrading at this point in the season.
THIS HAS BEEN AN OFFICIAL DECREE
Ok. You can read the stuff below for the reasons for this, and there's a link to the detailed discussion, but here's the "quick and dirty:"
1. You are not required to upgrade to 6.1 immediately, but it is suggested. You can upload in either version.
2. The rest of the 2008 season will be *simmed* (commish machine) on 6.1. The most significant changes will be seen when we actually start simming preseason and regular seasons.
BRIEF REASONING
It's impossible to legislate/expect that everyone will not upgrade. Several have done so already, and some people want to play SP with the patch over the weekend. If you don't upgrade, you won't see the additional combine information, and you won't see some small changes in your players' ratings. (There's one reported instance of a guy in another league changing by 9 points, but most players don't change at all, and the huge majority of the changes are no more than +/- 2 points.)

ONE SMALL DETAIL: When players' ratings go up/down, their contract demands can change as well. So if you're on one version and the commish is on another, renegotiating at asking price may be a bit difficult.
