decent premise, and they did what they had to do with the pilot episode (keep his marriage intact and raise enough questions...aka...wtf is with this other woman...why'd she show up, I assume she's going to be a common, overarching thread)

I liked it. I didn't plan to watch the show, but found myself in a hotel with no internet, so I figured I would give it a shot. Great music. I love the actor and the premise was pretty interesting. I think it will be worth a few more viewings.
I think the other woman, his ex-fiance Livia, is a "Journeywoman" of sorts. She is somehow doing the same thing.

thought it was ok for a pilot episode, though I did like the twist of his long thought to be dead wife (after almost having sex with her!) turning up in one of his time trips with apparant knowledge of what had happened to him. That made it interesting enough to watch the next couple episodes to see how the story grows.
I hope they don't cancel this show.

Is he only going to be helping individuals in the past, or will he time travel and accomplish things that could benefit millions, like going back and making sure rap music never exists?

I don't think you can have a show about going back into time to help people without there being some level of Quantum Leap coming through. (Going back to time, helping other people, Ziggy is replaced by the Internet, Another traveller is there (QL had the evil leapers)
Although, a few things that will set itself apart.
- He can go back and forth in time and interacts as himself
- He obviously can carry things through time that are on his personal body
- There is no hard limit right now that he can only travel in his lifetime (although, yes, I know QL had the one where he went back to the Civil War but, I think that was the only one prior to his birth)
I think there can be enough there to distinguish itself.

He thinks she died in a plane crash but, when he sees Olivia as a traveller, I thought she says she never got on the plane.

I liked it. the music was good, but DAMN it was so loud I had trouble hearing dialogue at some key times.
I also liked that they didn't hide the fact that his wife is his brothers ex. If this was Lost, that would have been the shocking reveal at the end of episode 20.
kind of distracting that he has an accent and his brother doesn't.

Yeah, the actor struggles with his accent something fierce. I really like him, but it's a bit distracting.
Also, his brother's police station and his newspaper office look identical. Very cool, but identical.

good call!
I'm a bit annoyed with this revelation, though. When Dan goes back in time, he does so wearing present-day clothes. When Livia goes forward in time, she somehow does so wearing clothes and a hairstyle from 60 years in the future. She must look REALLY out of place in the 1940s.

I was really looking forward to this show and am a huge fan of the concept. But I still can't get too into the show, there are just too many hangups.
-Why isn't seeing yourself in the past, your dead father, or any other major event a huge friggin deal to the guy? He kind of shrugs it off like no big deal. Heck, he is seeing his supposedly dead ex-fiance who he just finds out is from the past, yet it doesn't seem to be a huge deal to him. I guess I'm saying that these things should be HUGE deals and not something you just blow off.
-Why kill off so many potential great storylines in the first few episodes? The relationship between Livia and Dan would have made great TV. Finding out where Livia comes from so fast.
I think I'm in love with the concept of the show, just hate the writing of it. It's still a must-watch every week for me, but I just felt it could be so much better (especially after the first episode which was amazingly done). I am looking forward to next week though.

I think the show is just too intelligent for the average audience. TV is so dumbed down these days. I've enjoyed the show and really gotten into the last few episodes. I guess NBC won't even air the series finale episode that they say puts a nice end on the show.

NBC TO WRAP 'JOURNEYMAN,' REVIVE 'BEE' IN DECEMBER
By The Futon Critic Staff (TFC)
NBC to Wrap 'Journeyman,' Revive 'Bee' In December
LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- NBC is bringing back "The Singing Bee" while newcomer "Journeyman" will wrap its 13-episode run with a pair of episodes during the week of December 17.
Both developments, confirmed via listings updates this afternoon, come as the Peacock prepares to unveil its January lineup.
As for specifics, "Journeyman" will air its 12th and 13th installments on Monday, December 17 and Wednesday, December 19 at 10:00/9:00c respectively, leading out of two-hour episodes of "Clash of the Choirs" on both nights.
NBC has yet to commit to any episodes beyond its initial 13-episode order despite asking for three additional scripts last month.
The lack of a decision isn't a result of the strike however as fellow freshman "Chuck" and "Life" each received their back nine orders on Monday.
Meanwhile, "The Singing Bee" will rejoin the network's lineup with full hours on Friday, December 21 and Friday, December 28 at 8:00/7:00c. The news spells the end of a nearly two-month hiatus for the series, which hasn't aired since October 30.
To date, the Peacock has committed to 22 half-hour episodes of "Bee" - the last three of which are expected to turn up sometime in 2008.
Well there you go.

Not necessarily horrible - NBC had originally only scheduled episode 12 (part one), and partially due to fan response, added episode 13. So they're showing the whole run - and changed their minds (apparently) to do so, which is a good sign.

a bit sad to comment on the show with its apparant cancellation, but another good episode last night-an unexpected twist to Dan's brother's relationship, the first view into Olivia's "real-time" with a shocker at the end there, and saving his job through time-travel.
I really liked the last there-its not all "Touched by an Angel morality like" where Dan only goes back into time to right wrongs. This was all about him to save his job in the present.

I don't understand the mentality of people anymore. Since when is garbage like American Idol and Singing Bee considered good tv? Criminy.
If I even HEAR about American Idol I throw up in my mouth a little. This Journeyman show is ok, I don't consider it anything special, but then again I have only watched a little bit of it here and there. Kinda seems like an updated version of Quantum Leap. Well it wasn't cancelled as much as the back 9 wasn't picked up by NBC. So without any station to run the episodes, they aren't going to be making any more. I guess it is possible some other channel gives it a shot, but it didn't receive great ratings unfortunately so I doubt it.
I wish NBC had promoted this show better (like even half as much as that waste of a show Bionic Woman). I think it was in favorable time slots, it just started the first few episodes slow and never picked up fans after that.

Exactly what happened to me too. I originally watched it because it was after Heroes.. then I slowed in watching it, but kept recording them. One weekend when I had spare time I decided to watch through some of the episodes I missed, and slowly started really enjoying them... I got back in the habit of wanting to watch it weekly to the point where it was a must see for me.
That is why this is sad to see it end, I just think NBC gave up on it too early.

I don't think this will happen. They did it with L&O CI because that show is made by Universal which also owns NBC and USA. Journeyman is produced by an entire different studio and the costs to make the show are probably a bit high to go on cable (otherwise an arguement could be made to go on Sci Fi channel as well).
I think unfortunately the show had its chance and just struck out (thanks in part to NBC's lack of advertisement, and in part to the slow ramp up of the series)

It's a mistake to cancel the series for other reasons, however.
By teaching us that NBC cancels quality shows that are stuffed into bad time slots after just 13 episodes, it's that much harder to justify our time investment with the next new show.
Not too long ago, television executives would stick with a quality show that didn't pull in great numbers. They'd accept that they wouldn't do much better with anything else, and continue to run promos in hopes that it would catch on.
You'd get 2-3 seasons, and considerably more evidence before a show was declared a failure.
Journeyman was declared a failure after two weeks. A self-fulfilling prophecy, as the numbers have dwindled while NBC makes it clear the show won't get a chance.
I remember a great show called Picket Fences that did horribly its first season. CBS moved it around the schedule, kept calling it "the best show you've never seen." It ended up winning the emmy in its first season, and the audience, while never blockbuster, picked up for three more seasons before David E. Kelley pulled a disappearing act and the show went down the tubes.
I don't think Journeyman is necessarily emmy material, but it is a solid, entertaining show and while I'm glad I had a half-season, I'm pissed off that it's probably gone. Next year, I'm probably just going to wait until a first-year show develops a buzz before I start watching.
If Seinfeld debuted on NBC this season, it would have been canceled after six episodes.

I wonder how many great shows would have been cancelled after one season or less given today's atmosphere of shows. I'm just not sure what some networks want. They put shows in timeslots they can't possibly win and when they don't, they bail on them. People need to be realistic in what a show can bring in.

I loved Journeyman, but the one thing I won't argue is that it was in a bad timeslot.. I actually think after Herores (one of the biggest shows on NBC), it should have been able to retain some of that following and done quite well. Obviously there would have been some other better possible timeslots it could have gone in, but it wasn't on Friday night or anything.
I think the biggest fault i had with NBC is they promoted the heck out of Bionic Woman (and other shows) even well past the point of realizing that it was bombing, but they didn't do anything like that with Journeyman. I think if the season had started with episode 5 or 6 instead of the slow ramping up it did then it could have survived as well..
Basically i do agree with the biggest beef that they give up on shows too quickly. I hope they will change their mind on this one, but I am not holding my breath.
