CUSA sucked donkey balls last night with Boise whupping on Southern Miss, and Memphis blowing a 25 point lead against Arkansas State.
Tonight is WVU and USF. This should be a fun game to watch...

Agreed. I'm just disappointed that it looks like I'll have to pay for a week of ESPN's game package if I want to watch the Ducks and Bears tomorrow. I think tonight's game and that game have the potential to be the most exciting this week.

I know so little about her that I have no idea what you are referring to. However, if she's got a song that includes the line "this shit's bananas," then I have yet another reason not to like her.
If she did a duet with Kathy Griffin, I might consider strapping a bomb to my chest and attending the show.

I am not enjoying this game, at all.
On the positive side, I know we are capable of putting points on the board in a hurry. But, on the other hand, our center blowing about one out of every eight snaps and us turning the ball over twice every quarter doesn't leave me feeling real confident.
Either way, I agree with VPI, for the most part. The teams look very fast, but both look very sloppy.

Gotta hand it to USF. They are aggressive and fast as hell on defense. We had six turnovers, but most of them were forced by the Bulls' D.
Gotta question the playcalling of Coach Rod in this one, though. He gets the genius label pretty liberally these days, but this is two years in a row that he has not had an answer in this game.

Once he made that nice run, it looked to me like he became even quicker to try to take off. Sort of a predictable reaction I think when you're dealing with an inexperienced QB in that situation.

Down 21-6, I'm still not on board with the current conventional wisdom of kicking XP there. If you miss the 2pt conversion then, then you'll now you need 2 more scores. If you make it, you can play for the 1 score. Why not get that information sooner?

I'd normally agree with you, but 10 turnovers, a number of other fumbles, about a half dozen bad snaps by WVU's center, and USF getting a bunch of bad penalties and giving up a lot of 3rd/4th and long in the fourth quarter takes a lot of shine off of it, IMO.
I think USF is an outstanding defensive team, though. They forced five TOs against Auburn and six against us. Their offense is not very good, though. They only scored 14 points and one TD was on a fluky long TD. Unless WVU's defense is a lot better than I suspect it is, USF's offense has a long way to go to get to the caliber of its defense.

I'm not sure but I think WVU might be in position to actually get a bit of a pass on this one hurting them much since they lost White in the 2nd qtr. I'm not sure that USF doesn't beat them with him in there given the way this one was going, but I think that's going to get some play. Either way, WVU is probably about what a lot of us thought they were before this one even kicked off, a decent enough team but not in the highest echelon of the country (fewer & fewer teams are IMO, seems the gap between the very best and the rest is getting larger while the gap between 20 and 40 or 30 and 70 is getting narrower).

It will be interesting to hear what was up with Slaton in the second half. He only touched the ball twice, from what I have been able to gather. If he isn't hurt, Coach Rodriguez is going to have some explaining to do on why he kept his All American running back out of the game plan in a close game.

USF actually has more students than WVU. They've just not been at it very long, so to be at this D1-A thing for less than 15 years and not to be playing in say, the WAC and to be able to topple giants year after year proves they're gonna be doing this a while. Which is nice that there is a progression in the Florida schools away from the FSUs of the world and directional Florida seems to be playing to win the game.
I was about to post the same thing. According to wikipedia, USF is the 9th largest school in the nation.
#1 - The TV analysts didn't have a great game.
#2 - The WVU center had a terrible game... seems like even most of the non-fumbled snaps had to be reached-for by White and the backup dude.
#3 - USF Front Seven >>>>>>>> WVU O-Line
#4 - I thought the replay booth stuff was interesting, but maybe a touch overdone...?
#5 - Echo Swaggs on USF's offense. After the game someone (Robert Smith on ESPN 1 the Uno, maybe?) mentioned that USF's built-for-speed defense may have trouble with Rutgers' downhill running game, and I agree. Still this is a very fun defensive team to watch, and Grothe would be terrific if he had any fucking receivers with fingers.

09-29-2007, 01:12 AM
I give USF credit - they basically outhit and outhustled WVU all day and kept the pressure on a WVU offense that is usually the aggressor. They're a good team and it was great effort. Still, WVU outgained the Bulls 437-274. You just can't overcome that many turnovers.

I really enjoyed the look into the replay booth. Now it may come back and bite the NCAA in the ass later on when a official screws something up. It was very good insight on how the process is supposed to run.

Go Bulls!
I'm so proud of my alma mater today. Agreed they have a fantastic defense, but the offense needs more seasoning. The have two freshmen running backs and a sophomore QB, so a very young offense. If the freshmen can just hang on to the freakin' ball (those first two fumbles were one not covering up while trying to scoot along the outside of a big jam, and the second was trying to push backwards for an extra yard instead of just falling), they'd do a lot better. But Grothe tends to make throws when he has to.
Agreed that a power running game can give them fits, but Rutgers and Louisville should be good games to watch.
But honestly, USF was getting pressure with 4 linemen rushing, and when they added the fifth to contain the QB's scrambles, that was pretty much it. Either WVU's line is really that bad, or this USF team won't have as much trouble with Rutger's power-running as I think they will.
Oh yeah, and it was sweet that this was the first football game I got to watch in HD on the new 32" Vizio that replaced the 27" Sony SD TV in the bedroom...

I definitely think the Bulls D-line is talented, but I don't see the connection you're making. 240 pound DEs using their quickness to get pressure in the pass rush is completely different from 240 pound DEs being physical to stop a power running game.

One week after an important win that made the Canes look like they were on the right track, they're now struggling with Duke. It's 17-14 Miami and Duke has the ball with 6 minutes left.
larrymcg421
09-29-2007, 02:06 PM
Miami holds on. After a big 4th down sack by Moncur, the Canes go 69 yards in 2 plays to seal the game at 24-14.
A few things to note:
1) As much as I like Javarris, Graig Cooper needs to be the starter. He's just more explosive and I think the game wouldn't have been as close if he got more carries.
2) Kyle Wright unfortunately threw a couple picks that kept Duke in the game, but was still a very efficient 19-23 for 231 yards and 2 TD's.
3) Miami still has the penalty disease. Duke got three first downs off of Miami penalties. Got to cut that out.
4) Pass coverages are all screwed up. Not sure if it's blown assignment or poor planning, but for the 2nd week in a row Miami is giving up huge pass plays and this time it almost cost them.

So much for one of the scores that was interesting early.
LSU is now 34-9 over Tulane with under 9 minutes left.

South Carolina trailed briefly but is back in front of Miss. St 24-21 late 3rd
Ole Miss & UGA are now tied at 17 getting late in the 3rd
Iowa State still leads, but it's only 10-7 late 2nd after Nebraska scores
Notre Dame has pulled with 26-19 with Purdue, about 8 mins left
Michigan leads N'western 21-16 about 8 mins left

Game of momentum in GT-Clemson early - GT QB Taylor Bennett gets his foot stepped on on the first play and turns it over, which Clemson turns into 3 points... three dropped passes by Tech receivers, and 25 penalty yards on 4 penalties in the first 10 minutes.
Then a blocked Clemson punt recovered inside the ten, the Clemson CB gets flagged for PI in the end zone, and Tech has first and goal at the 2.

Oh, and an update from last week - Correy Earls, the GT wide receiver who was on the ground for so long last week at Virginia has recovered very well. UVa Medical Center did a great job (and earned some great comments from Gailey + the GT staff, as did Coach Groh), the injury was essentially pretty severe whiplash, and Earls was back in class on Monday. He'll probably be back on the field in a few weeks.

Taz,
If you haven't watched any of the game til now, you have no idea how sweet that play was. CU has been running this strange formation play all day. Thge backs sit in an I formation behind one of the tackles. A CU WR goes in motion and fakes a reverse while CU hands the ball to the tail back on a goofy looking counter play. The play has carved up OU for most of the game.
This time they faked the handoff and threw the ball down the field. TD CU. 24-24 with 4:05 left to play in the game.
I'm REALLY going ot love having Cody Hawkins for four years. He's a better QB than Koy Detmer was. He's so rail thin I just hope he can stay healthy. Great game for the Buffs either way, but I sure hope they pull off the upset here.

Yep. I don't disagree, but if there was ever a cliche fit for a game, this is it.
Just an FYI for those not familiar with the CU program: CU has more FR and SO getting quality time than ND. This includes 3 of the five OL, the QB, 2 of the top 3 WR, the backup RB, and plenty of guys on the defensive side of the ball.

Keep in mind this is coming from someone who thought CU would lose by 28 or more:
The 13 point thing is insanity. Pure insanity. I figured it'd be something like 49-20. CU has moved the ball well all year and Hawkins is by far and away the best QB OU has faced. (I know the kid from Tulsa is good, but Hawkins is special, I've been talking about him all year) Heading into Boulder, I figured CU would keep the game fairly close and then collapse toward halftime. (same thing they did against Arizona State.)
It looked like it was playing out just the way I thought. But there was one thing that wasn't happening: OU wasn't moving the ball well on CU. They'd have a big play here and a big play there, but they were struggling to move the ball consistently. When CU stopped turning the ball over in the second half, OU was stuck.
There were some drops by OU. And the overturned replay was huge. I'm still not quite sure how they turned it over. It was a fifty/fifty thing, but still. . . But the story of the game was the CU defense pressuring OU. A few drops don't explain 1-9 on third downs, 230 total yards of offense or 12 first downs for a game. That was about the best CU defense I've ever seen in a big game.
I still think OU throttles Texas next week and I think my friend EaglesFan27 needs to be careful in his celebration. Most every top notch team gets a scare during the year. Sometimes they get that scare and don't survive. I fully expect USC to have one of those scare games this year, no matter how good they are. (and yes, I think they are pretty damned goo) :)

Disagree a little here. CU did move the ball on FSU and really dominated TOP in the first half of the game. It didn't help CU that they got penalty after penalty in the red zone and missed two FG in the first half. What should have been a 10-6 halftime score was 10-0.

CU had less than 150 yards of offense for the first 53 minutes of the game. They ended up with 280 yards of offense, and about 140 of it was on the final 2 drives of the game.
CU had a 16 play, 8 minute drive in the first quarter of the game. They had another multiple first down drive in the second quarter and actually had more first downs than FSU did in the first half.
Again, I'm not saying CU was going to score 40 on FSU. But the offense wasn't just dominated for most of the game. You could see the talent there. CU should have scored more than 6 points in that game. Everyone around Denver was regretting the missed chances against FSU and saying that it'd be different when the line gelled just a bit better and when CU stopped making stupid mental mistakes at the end of drives.
I don't think any of us figured that'd happen today. (only the most idiotic homer could have thought that) Just as insane as that seems, I think it was pretty egotistical of OU to think they'd hold CU to 13 or under this week. FSU shouldn't have held CU to under 13. OU just came off a game where they gave up 21 to Tulsa and figured CU was that much worse? Wacko.

I don't know the TOP stats, but it seems like Clemson's offense is always on the field. That said, the Tech defense hasn't broken - 3rd and 20 now (after their sixth sack), they just used their second timeout of the half, with :42 left in the 3rd quarter. This is far too many games where I feel like Clemson has losst despite having superior talent.
I guess I am the only one who has noticed all year that Jamees Davis is a beast and runshard while Spiller dances and goes down by arm tackles. Don't get me wrong Spiller is dynamic and has game breaking ability on every play, but the coaches have simply refused to force feed #1. To start the 2nd half they come out with a steady dose of Davis and march down the field, from then on he is forgotten.
I will look it up shortly but I will bet he averaged 5+ypc but did not get more than 12 carries.
Oh well another typical Clemson GT game of weirdness and NCAA 07 like momentum swings. And while Tenuda deserves applause for for a good gameplan and blitzing often, I can't help but wonder if the offensice play callers even watched the game....

I had a bad feeling about this game coming in today.
I think the WVU loss was probably very bad for the mindset of the Rutgers players.

If Rutgers didn't have timeouts left, then the smart play was to let Maryland have a TD. No chance they win if the clock moves. Very small chance with a TD and onside kick, but it's better than watching Maryland kneel it away.

I would find it to be completely fair if Rutgers drops out of the Top 25 entirely. They haven't beaten anyone.

FSU driving with a chance to maybe start putting Alabama away but threw an INT inside the 10. Still 7-0 'Noles starting to get a little late in the 3rd qtr.

Arkansas trying to recover from a pretty heart-breaking 2 game losing streak by hosting North Texas tonight. 14-0 5 minutes in. Let the healing begin. Oh and Casey Dick has a 61 yd TD pass.

Frankly, all of this excitement over Rutgers being 'good' is too much for me. I liked it better when Rutgers was a quasi-good academic school and no one ever expected them to win ever. All of this Rutgers supposed to win stuff is just throwing me off to the nth degree. That professor who raised hell the other day about RU selling its soul to the devil of intercollegiate sports was right. I don't like this trend and to me, it's a battle I doubt they can really win.
And that's not because of the win today, I've been thinking about it for a while now. I just don't like where it goes. Because if Schiano does leave, they're back to square 1.

What an embarassment.
Superior talent? Were we watching the same game? Have we watched the same series for the last 20 years?
Clemson has an excellent defensive front and two playmakers at running back, however the offensive line is not good and the quarterback is below average.
Tech has a better offensive line and a running back corps that is just a notch below Clemson's. Tech's QB is not an all star either. Both teams have average wide receivers--both dropped balls today.
The front seven on defense is every bit as good as Clemson's. Secondaries are probably a wash.
In a pretty evenly matched game, it comes down to special teams and turnovers. Tech had a flawless special teams game. Clemson did not.

Tech ouplayed Clemson, no doubt.
But Talent wise?
Tech wins OL
QB is a wash (hard to say how average harper is when he is laying on his back 13 times)
Rb Advantage Clemson GT is good but clearly a step behind
WR advantage Clemson
DL I think Clemson is a notch or two above
LB same
DBs a wash or maybe slight advantage to GT
You have 2 of the top 10 NATIOANL NCAA 100 meter sprinters on Clemson.
I think this game could have been lopsided with a coach in orange...
Sorry I am not a TB hater, actually I am a huge supporter, but this wwas pathetic.

I think TB's playcalling was suspect, particularly on first down. But, you're not exactly dealing with an offensive juggernaut on the other side of the ball.
I think you give your D-Line too much credit vs. GT's. Our ends are much superior. Your tackles may be better. The reason why our safety and LB blitzes are so successful is because the ends demand attention. Spiller was having to pick up #93 all afternoon. He and #90 are both excellent ends.
I don't think the talent gap is as big as you think (if there is one at all), and the tightness of the series over the last 20 years is testament to that.

...I think it was pretty egotistical of OU to think they'd hold CU to 13 or under this week. FSU shouldn't have held CU to under 13. OU just came off a game where they gave up 21 to Tulsa and figured CU was that much worse? Wacko.
Gotta disagree with you Troy... I think you gave a pretty even-handed analysis, but after seeing both, Tulsa has the better offense in my humble opinion. Smith rates ahead of Hawkins in nearly every regard, if you ask me.
Colorado's line did a much better job than Tulsa's did, and that ended up being big towards the end. OU was so mistake-prone that their defense was on the field all day, and they couldn't rise to that.
Don't get me wrong; I offer my kudos to Colorado. In fact, when it was 24-17, I told my wife, "OU has been outplayed today, and they'll be lucky to win." I just think it was the failings in so many areas of play that led to the defense falling apart at the end.

No way your ends are "much superior" Ours are Sophs (Merling a RS and Sapp a true) and both will be in the NFL in 1 more year, likely both 1st rounders...at least according to Kiper.
The reason GT had so much pressure is they rush 5 or 6 EVERY play, they neever use a 4 man front, tenuda never has.
Clemson on the other hand uses mostly 3 man fronts while dropping a DE into the flats for coverage

Considering what you already pointed out (the threat that Spiller represents), I'd say Davis getting more carries than Spiller in 4 of 5 games so far, and the same number in the win over Furman is a pretty reasonable mix. Throw in that Spiller is (apparently) a better receiver (or at least more trusted) and that it's probably a little soon to decide that Spiller won't return to this form of last year, and that the rotation does tend to keep both backs fresh, I'm not sure I'd count this as a big problem.
Also, and I wasn't really conscious that this was as dominant as it was, but Clemson only ran 6 offensive plays (all passes) in the 4th quarter thanks in part due to the fumbled punt. And after the opening drive, they went back to Spiller for a 3-and-out before coming back to Davis for some success again but then they got pass happy right before the end of the third quarter & that was the end of the day for both backs.

edit to add: D.J. Hall makes huge catch on the backline on the end zone to cut the lead to 14-7. That's half the "unforeseen" I guess.

The anti-Wolverine crowd is about to have a little fun, courtesy of a freshman transfer named Artis Chambers.
(just a teaser, I'd like to get people visiting Football Frontier more regularly).
Oy. Not what I wanted to see after getting back from the game.
I didn't think Henne looked all that great -- the defense just gave him better field position. But on the other hand, he might have still been hurt. I actually missed Henne's opening drive, too, since I forgot the game started at 11, not 12 (you'd think I'd have figured out that central time zone thing after 4 years).
McFadden and Jones both over 100 yards rushing (131 each as of now) in the first half. Arkansas 45, North Texas 0 2nd quarter.
