It's not important. At least according to the California teaching standards.

There is no mention of the post reconstruction Western history. No cow towns, cowboys, robbers, Deadwood, Dodge City, etc. In fact, even Native American history is done with by 5th grade. Even then all western history goes from "1800 to the mid-1800s"

I'm teaching it to my Juniors anyway. Screw Arnold.

This is a little off topic, but why don't we teach history from current day backward? It seems like it would be easier to engage students and draw parallels to modern day that way.

Am I missing something?
I though the wild west was gone by the 1900s and would not be included in the class.

I had world history as a freshman, which included mostly early cultures (Egypt, Mesopotamia, etc). We didn't take US history until 11th grade.

That's my point. Nowhere do kids need to learn about the late 19th century west. All that is required is for 5th graders to learn native american stuff
