For those who are married and are guys, just wondering if you've ever hit your wife out of anger. My wife and I were talking about this and after over 11 years of marriage, I've never hit her out of anger. I have hit her fooling around, but it was by accident. Poll is anonymous.

I've never hit anyone out of anger.
I have some anger management issues that, when I was younger, were pretty overwhelming. But I think they're more or less under control now. I've not hit anybody out of anger in over 10 years.

In nearly 11 years of marriage, and as angry as I've gotten with her (and that's is pretty angry), the thought has honestly never crossed my mind.
Cheers!
Honestly I doubt those who have would say so because it is very much looked down upon. I haven't hit a girl but I have come close.

I'm going to say yes. It was my first wife, and she hit me with the heel of one of her shoes. I slapped her with an open hand, and felt like shit about it for months. Hell, I felt bad about it well after the marriage was over with. At the time, it was a reflex type reaction rather than a conscious decision. I learned my lesson, there are just some places you don't go.

I agree. However when a man hits a woman thats something your told from a young age not to do no matter. Alot of people both male and female lose alot of respect for you for hitting a woman. While the same is true for cheating there could be other reasons why someone cheats on their partner that can atleast be rational. Is that making sense or am I way off base.

I was close to doing this a few years ago. I was walking away from her and she punched me in the back. Surprisingly it hurt, so I turned around and raised my fist. It was more of a kneejerk reaction as opposed to consciously threatening her. I think this falls in that category.
On a different note, my wife has hit me quite a few times. She's left bruises. None of it hurt other than that one time described above, so I looked at her hitting me as no big deal.

For once ;), I don't think you are off base. I think both cheating and hitting your wife/GF are terrible, but I think there is more widespread stigma to hitting your GF/wife than there is to cheating. That being said, I've never done either one, but I've come close once to hitting a GF. That was part of what made me go back into counseling a long time ago.

I had some pretty serious anger management issues when I as younger, but I NEVER hit a woman, much less my wife.
Now early in our marriage there were at least 2 times where she got out of my way and I went for a few hour drive to calm down, but no matter I always seemed to be able to control my anger with women, it actually helped me realize that I could control my actions during anger management counseling (court mandated I might add)
I have a great anger management and have never hit anybody in my life without being hit first, and for sure i wouldn't ever hit a woman.
I have had angry discussions as everybody, but unless you touch me, i won't ever touch you as there is noy any word that anybody can say to me that can make me to lose my control. I have always been amazed and the guys who totally lose their control when insulted, like being called son of a bitch or stuff like that. I can underestand a kid doing it, but an adult? does it really put you as angry to lose your control if being called son of a bitch for example? I can't underestand it, a word is just a word.
I fight words with words and fists with fists, but i must admit i'm a guy that is said by others as made of "ice" (and it has nothing to do with my nick) as I have total control over expressing my feelings (and i'm no saying that is a good thing).

I had a GF when i was younger who went ballistic on me one night accusing me of cheating with one of her friends. She clawed and slapped at me but i just tried to hold her arms, she kneed me in the balls and i elbowed her in the side of the head. I didn't and don't feel bad that I did it but I ended the relationship because once something like that happens, well, game over.
The only other time was when I found out my GF was tanking monopoly vs me. I beat the ever loving shit out of the bitch over that.

Never married, but I was in a long-term relationship (7 years), and I never came close to hitting her. Then again, I really can't think of a time when she really made me angry. We were pretty laid back people. Never had any fights (disagreements, yes. But not "fights"). As someone else said, if it ever got to the point where I wanted to hit her, that would be the end of it.

I'm not a violent person, and I would never hit a woman with prior intention. But the above scenario is an interesting study in the differences in expectations of men and women - why is it that it was "game over" when you elbowed her in the head after she kneed you in the balls?
If someone is violent to me, I can't guarantee that I'm not going to respond in kind - in fact, it's almost certain I will. If it happens to be a woman, I'm going to do my best to try to grapple with her in such a way as to keep her from swinging or clawing at me, but if she decides to knee me in the nuts in the process, I can't guarantee that the animal part of my brain wouldn't snap and result in me shoving or slapping her in return.

"I'd hit it." ;)
Seriously... Never been married and have hit two women in my life. One was completely by accident, as it was a waitress who walked into my fist as I took off my jacket. (I actually got her number, but nothing came of it.) The other I still feel bad about, but it did teach me a lot about life. I was in a bad mood and trying to fix a sink using a monkey wrench that was too big. It kept slipping and I kept banging my fingers. She decided it was a good time to mess with me and changed the stereo to the music she liked. I kept getting up and changing it back. After several times back and forth, with her having a great time laughing, I warned her I was not in the mood. She kept it up, and I ended up warning her that if she tried it one more time I would "hit her like a man." She did. I did. After that I decided if I was ever with someone who liked to try and push buttons I would get the hell out. (I was only 16 at the time, and have gone 18 years without physically hitting a woman, save for the waitress.)
Some women seem to try and test you. Some seem to not respect you if you won't "put them in their place." When faced with these type of women I get the hell away.

I can appreciate the spirit of what you're saying there, but if someone came out here and could honestly admit domestic battery, it'd be interesting to their perspective - if it was honest.
Domestic violence isn't an anger issue - an anger issue is yelling at waitresses who get your order wrong, road rage, or getting in bar fights. Domestic violence is something different entirely, that our society still doesn't quite understand. The men don't think they did anything wrong, and their victims often stick up for them.
I've ton a bunch of jury trials (as a prosecutor) where we're facing off against the batterer and victim, who both testify for the defense. We utilize neighbor eyewitnesses, and some instances, even the couple's children. It's incredibly difficult, and even more bewildering. And the thing I struggle with is - should we even be prosecuting cases like that? Next time something happens, will the victim even make the call for help, after all we've put the family through? Sometimes you need to dismiss the case right off the bat, just in hopes that you can continue a relationship with the victim where she feels comfortable having the police intervene if things get worse. It's brutal.
So to the answer the poll, no, I've certainly never hit a woman, but I'd be fascinated to hear from someone who has.

not on purpose. i inadvertently/accidently hit my wife once during an arguement. we were arguing and i was trying to take something out of her hand (that we were both holding and arguing over) and i don't remember if my hand slipped or if she let go of the thing but my hand bopped her face. she cried and i felt horrible cuz i didn't want her to think i did it on purpose. i wouldn't ever hit her, i get very angry but i become more destructive to inanimate objects. i've thrown things on occassion, but i don't direct my anger towards her. we don't really argue much, we mostly marriage-bicker. put me in a house with jessica alba for 5 years and all jokes aside eventually we'll find something to argue about. we don't really have many blowouts. we don't stay mad at each other long.

I voted no earlier today, but then I realized that is actually untrue.
I once socked a girlfriend with a closed fist square between the eyes. It was out of self-defense, as she was attacking me, and had displayed no sign of slowing down. So I held her in a headlock....and she kept swinging at my face...and connected a few times......so I finally gave her one, maybe two shots right in the eyes.
She stopped attacking. The relationship ended shortly thereafter. I didn't feel bad...I didn't seek counseling....She was just a crazy bitch, and I was just a crazy fucking guy. It was...fate...
Do I regret it? No. Would I ever do it again under the same, unfortunate circumstances? Ehhhh....I would try much harder to avoid it. I don't believe in hitting women, children, or even other men....but when you go for broke in a drunken rage, and put me at risk.....well, you fucked up by attacking my beautiful face, and the attack must stop immediately.
So, switch my no vote to yes.

Sounds very noble and all, but I believe there are circumstances where it's necessary, i.e. self-defense. If a woman is going batshit crazy on me, swinging and kicking, I'm going to do what I can to subdue her - pin her down, grab her in a bear-hug, etc. But if she's bigger than me and overpowering me, or if she goes dirty and kicks at my nuts, it's going to be extremely hard for me to avoid reflexively defending myself. As someone else said, once they go for the nuts, all bets are off.

Just because you claim to love her more than anyone else in the world doesn't mean that you can't have an argument with her. For some people, part of arguing is throwing things, destroying property, or even...

I was in a dive bar back in college (for you Austinites, it was Charlie's Attic off Airport) and a girl that I drunkenly hooked up with a couple of weeks earlier at a different bar downtown came in. I didn't think there were any hard feelings or animosity in place, but apparently I was wrong. She started spouting off about that this was her bar, her territory and an asshole like me wasn't allowed around there. Then much to my surprise, she started swinging at me, screaming about what a bastard I was, and after about the fourth hit, I popped her in the side of the head with the base of my palm. Hard.
This bar had what can best be described as a supersized Jenga game in the middle of the room and she fell into it, knocking these wooden planks all over the place. It made a gigantic mess, broken glass and sticky liquid just everywhere. We both get told to leave and she's thrown out while my group is settling our tab. As I walk downstairs, she's sitting on the pavement and had the audacity to ask us for a ride home. Obviously, we declined ("Fuck all you bastards!") and I never went back there again.

When you feel that strongly about someone, even love, it means there are powerful emotions at work. You can get very angry at the people you love the most.
No, I've never hit my wife. Outside of the man/woman prism, though, it doesn't mean she's never deserved it. I just won't do it. We've been together for 13-1/2 years now. Of course there will be a heated argument from time to time.

What if she attacks you? Don't you have the right to defend yourself? What if she has a weapon? (i.e. a knife) I don't think this issue is cut and dry because some situations may warrant you defending yourself. Now please don't misinterpet what I am saying, because it is not okay to hit women for no reason at all.

I can't believe all the people who mix together domestic violence(as a pattern, as the phrase 99% of the time is used) and perhaps one mistake in the heat of the moment.
I will preface this by saying that I am someone who never gets mad at anyone. I open the door for every women I ever am around; I would be the last person to hit a woman. But to say someone is scum for one moment of violence? When we have all known women who have had violent moments towards men?
Violence as a pattern of intimidation, or as part of any pattern, is totally unacceptable. But damn if I am gonna think of a guy as scum if hes getting wailed on and he hits back in self defense in the heat of the moment. Even if thats not the way I am wired to react, I can understand it.

I agree with this post 100 percent. There is a major difference between a one time slip up and someone who makes it a habit. Actually someone who has maybe reacted to one bad situation with a slap in self defense may be a much better person than someone who may have never hit their wife but continually neglects and verbally abuses them.

As much as everyone thinks of me as having a temper on the internets, I can honestly say that I'm the exact opposite in "real" life. I rarely even raise my voice, and in 3 1/2 years of marriage, I can count the amount of verbal arguments on 1 hand.
I think the reason is because I was physically abused my entire childhood by my dad before he became a Christian, and I promised myself that I would never raise a finger against another person in anger. That's not to say that I don't have anger, it's just that I internalize it, and take it out in other places, such as FOFC, basketball, etc.

Yeah, I think that's what this thread boils down to - I don't think anyone here really thinks it's OK to hit a woman just because he's frustrated or upset or angry. But if the situation is one where the woman is being violent and attacking you, then the rules change.

If you answered yes to this thread you need to be banned from live and you're a fucking coward who deserves anything bad that ever happens to you tenfold.
I would be in favor of burning their house down and/or killing them.
Some people just live to post in threads like these to feel superior.

I'd have to give my wife even odds at being able to take me, so I don't think I dare.
I don't think it's right to hit your wife and never have even thought of it, but there are scenarios where I don't believe it would necessarily be wrong, mostly in self defense.

My wife and I have never hit each other in our 14 years of being together.
With that said, I think the change in the submissive role of a woman in a relationship to a leading or working role in current day life has lead to a lot of abuse by women. They are more impowered and less inclined to put up with the testosterone-driven bull**** that they did as little as 50 years ago. It's a good change IMO, but some women need to realize that doesn't give them the right to hit their spouse anymore than the man should.

Smack my bitch up.
Never been hit. One guy was a rage-a-holic but with 3 brothers and the ability to kick some ass myself, he never went there. I only hit a partner once. I found evidence of his cheating on his laptop and when he came home that night I slapped him so hard you could hear it into next week.

Never. Besides, she is trained in a style of Kung Fu as I am where hitting her would be very difficult, and not very smart.
This is interesting because in our MA class a couple of weeks ago we had to spar, and I had to hit her (we had gear on of course). She hit me back, and kicked me so hard I was very proud of her.

I agree 100% - however I have slapped my wife once a long time ago when our living room was on fire (thank my oldest son*) - she was in a hysterical fit and I wanted to get her and the kids somewhere safe so I could work out what to do ... hence I wanted to shock her into listening to me and calming down (I'd already tried reasoning with her and tugging her in the direction of the door at that point and was seriously concerned about the situation).
Was I right to do it - I don't know to be honest, I was frankly terrified and wanted to ensure that her and the kids got somewhere safe asap and couldn't see another way to ensure it ...
*We had an open fire in that house and Jake managed to land a combustible toy on it (when they say "Not Firesafe" they actually mean volitile substance probably related to napalm), incidentally the house survived ok - all plastic effects on the fire were totally melted by the time I got it out (and the room needed totally repainting from the smoke). The main reason I was nervous was it was a gas fire and from the heat coming off the flames I wasn't sure how the gas pipes would hold up - which could have been somewhat entertaining.
