On the free agent screen during the signing process some players names are different colors green, red, and blue but some are the original black text. What does this mean?

Red is your player last season who is now a FA; green is someone who would have an affinity with your team leader, blue is someone who would have a conflict with your team leader.

Also, orange means that they are currently injured

The help file (the F1 button is your friend!):
Entries highlighted in red are players either on your team or players to whom you've made a contract offer. Entries highlighted in brown are injured players. Entries highlighted in green are players who may be an affinity match for your team, according to team leaders. Entries highlighted in blue are players who may pose a conflict for your team leaders.Where brown is the orange-like color. Also, unlike the quoted text, players may also be highlighted blue or green if it means they will become a team leader with at least one conflict or with only affinities and non-conflicts.

Another thing to look out for (and something that's always gotten me, and bugged the crap out of me):

Let's say you just ended the 2007 season, and Roger Houfenhausen is your Offensive Line Leader. HIs contract ended, and you don't plan on resigning him. No one else picks him up.

He'll still be listed as your leader ALL throughout the free agency period, until either a) someone else signs him, b)you pass training camp. Therefore, all players you see in free agency that are green, WILL NOT actually be an affinity with whoever will be your O-Line leader in 2007. That always bugged me.

At least I'm pretty sure this is true. :)

EDIT: It's still POSSIBLE that the green guy would be an affinity with the new guy, but it would come down to chance/luck unless your tracking birthdates and such.

Thnaks for all the info guys. I didn't think to check the help file;) Also, I am sure this has been brought up I found some of the color choices to be wierd if not downright unintuitive especially for draftee combine scores. Blue is excellent combine, red is superior and green is poor??? Also while I am at it what about just plain black?

Jim explained this in one of the threads around here. Agree with it or not (I tend to agree with you) he does have a logic too it.

Apparently it is based on a study done of what colors stand out to the human eye the most. So for instance I guess blue stands out the most so it's excellent, etc, etc.

Wow that color choice rational is bizarre to say the least....... but ok.

when wade says blue he means red, of course.
