A little Googling, and it looks like this is legit but was intended (?) to only work in parts of Kansas where the coupon was actually mailed out. But there are quite a few reports on various websites that the printed version has worked at locations around the country but indeed it might turn out to be a case where YMMV (since the coupon clearly states it isn't supposed to be photocopied).

I've done the calculation.
I'm going to try to buy 4 games that Gamestop will give you $25 for and keep one for myself.
Those 4 games would give you $100 trade-in, plus Gamestop has $10 extra for 2 trade-in games. So you'd end up with $120 store credit plus a game for $25.
(assuming they have the games available that I need)

You're going to hate me. I just purchased:
The Bigs (PS3)
Enchanted Arms (PS3)
Ninja Gaiden Sigma (PS3)
Virtua Tennis (PS3)
Motorstorm (PS3)
Retail price = $241
My price = just a hair over $26. :)
WOOHOO! FYI.....I used the coupon in Kansas City, MO.
Also, another mention concerning the coupon. The store manager (who did my transaction) said that this coupon would only work once as the code is for a specific account.
1. I know that's not the case as this coupon and its associated code have been sent all over the internet by now and used many times.
2. He didn't even take my Blockbuster card for the transaction since none of it was rental. Hence, I could use this coupon again without any association with my account. You can be sure I'll be stopping at another Blockbuster on my way home with a new copy of that coupon.

Although I'm usually the suspicious type, it never even crossed my mind that someone might have just altered the expiration date of the coupon. Sometimes the simplest explanations ...
Still, if this was a national coupon, it's kind of odd to me that they simply didn't have something in their system that would have indicated that this was an expired offer, showing up when the barcode was scanned. I mean, we can put a man on the moon & we can track inventory all over the world but we don't have a POS system that is smart enough to know whether a coupon is valid?
FTR, that has nothing to do with the ethics of any of it, I just found it interesting to realize that apparent limitation (since some of the successful uses don't seem to have required any sort of manager override at the register or anything).

i dont think it was the expiration date that was changed. i think BB manually changed their system to make the coupon expire yesterday to combat its widespread use.
i think the fine print was changed, maybe limiting it to certain stores in kansas, or limiting it to $20 games maximum or something.

This will be fodder for the next lawsuit that is filed against CAG (and probably this time will succeed). The second that the version changed, and the "ad" didn't get pulled, CAG was knowingly perpetrating fraud.
I wouldn't be surprised to see Blockbuster go after the folks who used the "coupon" to pay for the difference between what they paid and what they should have paid, ESPECIALLY since A) Most of them used credit cards, or linked to their Blockbuster Rental Account, B) Quite a few of em said "Hey, who cares if it's a photoshop, if I can get away with it, I will" (again, knowing it was probably fraudulent), C) Some folks used this coupon multiple times.

The person who's going to be in a lot of trouble is the one who distributed the coupon with the legit barcode and altered date. My guess is that it is likely a inside job. There's a Blockbuster employee with access to the computers who figured out that this would work as an exploit.
The customer shouldn't and isn't going to be held responsible in any way. Even if there were some people that intentionally used this coupon knowing it was a photoshop as Fozzie mentioned (obviously no one in this thread had that intent), they'd still have to prove that intent in a court of law, which would be difficult, if not impossible.
That barcode expired on October 15th according to the original coupon from Kansas. It should have been rendered invalid in the system at that point.
Neuqua
10-16-2007, 06:55 PM
Is it possible that this was a legit coupon that expired on 10/31 for the KC area but when corporate got wind that it was all over the internet, it was them who changed the expiration date to 10/15 so the coupon would no longer be accepted? I think I read that explanation some where.

A better comparison would be that you used a gift card to blockbuster for $50, but still held on to it. Two weeks later, you said "what the heck, I'll try and use it again." Through some computer glitch, it allowed you to buy another $50 of items. I'm not sure if it can be proven fraud, but you did use a bogus gift card.
Now, I don't think Blockbuster would sue a person for doing the above, but I think they would be well within their rights to charge that person's CC for the purchase once they found out the gift card had already been used.
Of course, you could make a more cynical comparison and say it was like going into a store with counterfeit money and making a purchase. Then, two hours later, the store finds out the money was counterfeit. I think that's a bit of a stretch, but no more of a stretch than your "1 cent for the entire inventory" comparison. This wasn't a case of both sides agree to a valid transaction, this was a case of one knowingly (or unknowingly) pushing an invalid coupon that was masked as a valid one on an unsuspecting BB employee. Again, the difficulty would be proving that the person knew the coupon was a fake before making the purchase - which would be tough. However, BB could easily charge their account or suspend it until the items were paid for or returned.
Butter
10-16-2007, 07:19 PM
But the items were paid for. It would seem like it is Blockbuster's fault for accepting the coupon.
I understand the counterfeit money scenario, but if the coupon scans in Blockbuster's computer system as valid... I find it hard, once again, to view this as fraud. It's like when Amazon accidentally leaves a "1" off the front of a price. If a bunch of people get in and buy a $120 item for $20 due to a computer error, is that fraud as well?

If your local Lackluster store has crappy managers then it still may work...so you have a 25% chance of it working today or tomorrow ;). However, BB could easily charge their account or suspend it until the items were paid for or returned.
As I mentioned before, I offered my card when I went in, but the manager said it wasn't needed on a purchase. So in my case at least, they don't even have account information. I would guess that this occurred in many instances since most people likely didn't rent either.

I took my games back, the lady I know was VERY happy to see me. Oh well, no biggie and I'm glad I did.
I don't mind a "leaked" coupon, but screw fraud.

But the items were paid for. It would seem like it is Blockbuster's fault for accepting the coupon.
Just because a blockbuster employee takes a coupon does not make it legit. That's like saying "Well, the ATM accepted my deposit for $500 when I put a blank envelope in - so it's the bank's problem to realize it got duped and I should get credit for the $500 in my account".
I understand the counterfeit money scenario, but if the coupon scans in Blockbuster's computer system as valid
Again, how is this different than some kid eyeballing a fake $20 bill and thinking it's legit? Just because you fake out a machine doesn't mean you are in the free and clear
I find it hard, once again, to view this as fraud.
I do agree here. I don't think most people that used the coupon definately know it was a fake and were fraudulent in their actions. And, even if some did, it would be much tougher to prove.
It's like when Amazon accidentally leaves a "1" off the front of a price. If a bunch of people get in and buy a $120 item for $20 due to a computer error, is that fraud as well?
I remember a few months back when a major PS3 game was accidently discounted on pre-sale. IIRC, the orders were cancelled. And, again, I think there's a difference between a mistaken labeled product in the store and someone bringing in a fake coupon.
I wish I had heard about the legit Kansas offer in time.

we opened a new store and hired ALL of our friends. We ran the store like Empire Records. It was awesome for me as a kid. Amazingly we hired hot girls, hooked up with hot girls, went out to clubs afterward, it was just very very awesome to work with all of your friends. Financially, I wish I had left to wait tables much earlier than I did, but it was a lot of fun.
